Satch plays SWTA on a cheap knockoff Strat and a practice amp - makes you think about whether that next new expensive piece of your rig is worth it wink.gif

Well, this is the truth biggrin.gif tone comes from the hands of the player as well as from the gear, so I guess it has to be a balanced combo for tremendous results, but Satch's vid proves this theory a lil wrong. Magic? laugh.gif

I think gear does two things:

One, it inspires us and excites, urging us to play. Newer and higher end gear does sound better, thus we are more fulfilled by it - in the sense that we believe it brings us closer to our musical vision.

Two, psychological, we have this $1,000 guitar that Guthrie Govan uses, now I have it. Somewhere in my mind I feel like I am playing as good as him, on some level. We all do it.

That being said, show me steve vai playing my favorite song on my first guitar through my first amp, I will still not want them back! laugh.gif

This is so true. I was many times surprised when musicians approached me after gigs and asked about my bass guitar (which was way back then a really cheap and not that good 150$ jazz bass copy). They just couldn't believe my answer. Also, I have noticed some musicians that play on really good gear but have a bad tone. Its impossible when you think about the quality/price tag of that gear. Over the years I found that "knowing what sounds good" is an art on its own. That is the ultimate question of "the tone" I guess. Some people have it - some don't. Learning about your gear helps a lot to achieve that tone you are looking for. Yet again - whenever I played on different setups (amps, stages, PA systems), I still sounded like me smile.gif Main sound comes from the man + guitar as first links. Other stuff doesn't matter that much I guess (if you know how to set it up to convey your "main tone").

Its always funny when you see someone who has loads of expensive high end gear, and don't bother to practice and they can't play. I went to school with guys like this and they ended up dropping out. I think you should learn to play first before you invest in any real gear. Now that I know what I'm doing, I like having a nice sounding guitar that plays nice.

this is a lesson in....pretty much how to be a great guitar player...but I would say his timing! it's so great, he's so locked in with the backing track which is way low in the back, amazing!

OH MY GOSH!! I got to see it in action. It sounds just like Satch on his normal guitar. I would have thought it would have sounded crappy, but Joe made it scream just the same.

Definitely agree with you here.. having better stuff does give us a mental boost. I'm sure we've all experienced times when we pick up the guitar and for some reason, our tone just doesn't sound as good that day.. then it makes it difficult to play well. If my tone ain't happening, then my playing definitely suffers.

Satch is great man smile.gif And this song is too legendary, so it sounds awesome, but I gotta say, the sound in the video isn't that great, when I compared it to this:

It's the overall impression, gear looks intimidating on the stage, and if a player knows how to use it to it's own advantage - then it's a 100% effect. Satch is a legend, they made that gear specifically for him, what else is there to say! smile.gif

I've seen hundreds of examples where good gear isn't being put into good use, but what can you do, some people will never learn smile.gif Keep the setup as simple and as possible, the decent as it gets to do what you want with it - my rule wink.gif

Great video, always nice to see this...And he, I've had great player play on my guitar. The lead guitar player from my former band could really play like Gilmour, and he even sounded like him on my Ibanez guitar with two humbuckers...I never came near that sound. On the other hand, I played some nice Metallica riffs on his Strat and sounded more like the original than him. So I really do think the player is more important than the gear.
But I agree, gear can make your confidence rise. Or make you practise harder..."I've got this 1.000 € guitar, now I have to get down and practise!" laugh.gif It's the same with expensive running shoes...I can tell that from experience.

Nice video smile.gif Of course we all rather have satch's fingers than the best guitar in the world (at least I do). Having said that, tone on that video is not very good (obviously).

My main guitar is a $179 ibanez! Best piece o cr@p I've bought to date. Says nothing about my ability to play it! But I took the cheap route for sure until I earn the next step-up!

This is great. Reminds of when I was learning to golf and signed up for lessons with a local Pro. He asked me to hit some balls with my cheap knock off driver so he could judge my ability. I shanked a few balls and then topped one, embarrassed I turned to him and yelled..these clubs SUCK!! He looked at me and said.."Hmmmm..Really? let me see it". He took my driver and cracked a 300 yard drive right down the center of the fairway. He then handed the driver back to me with a wry smile and said... "seems okay to me" mad.gif
