I've created a preset for OVERLOUD TH1 that is focused on "Djentish" tone and creating clarity on the low/detuned strings while keeping its crunch. I"ve stacked two instances of my typical "gain stack" pedal sequence and used two cabinets and four mics. It's a bit of a long chain, but works well.

Here is a sample (no preamps/pre compressors used, just software)

You could of course, create something similar with a real guitar/amp/pedals. Take a look at the screen grab and it will give you an idea of the signal chain.

In the patch, I"ve dialed the Noise Gates back from where I had them in the screen grab so you can dial in as much or little Gate as you need.

Enjoy! smile.gif

What is the theory behind two noise gates to the signal path? How does that work and where are they positioned normally?

Sounds good to me - I'll try this one for sure.. Can I use it for TH2too? Or do I need to convert it?

They are actually "Expanders" that have a noise gate. I'm using them to tone shape a bit and turning the gates down to zero. But if you need more gate, E.G. you get NOISE/HISS, just dial in as much as you need. smile.gif

Todd, What's that programme you're using for those Stompbox simulations?

It's called OVERLOUD TH1. It's pretty darn Spiff IMHO!

Thanks smile.gif Two Cabs seems to enhance bass response, reduce fizziness, and give more "Speaker Character" making it sound a bit less emulated. Enjoy! smile.gif

Helps with the staccato style in the synchopation.

A good point wink.gif Stacking noise gates is a good way to really cut down on noise/hiss as you can use one as a club with very heavy gate settings and the other as a scalpel to dial in the gate just at the moment you need it to clip off. If you are synching to a tight double bass drum pattern, it can provide a literal gate between noise/signal and dead stop. If everyone is meant to stop on a dime, and you can hear his/noise/gates closing, it ruins the effect. This goes beyond being able to play it right as the gain often needed adds noise that the player isn't making.

In the case of this patch they are after each distortion box (two distortion states before the amp). So each distortion can be gated seperately.

I'd shut the gates off and was using the gate/expander device just for tone shaping/expansion and left the gate controls up to the user. I used to leave gate controls in, but depending on the guitar and signal, it can cut off sustain. So now I leave the gates open so user's can dial them in.

That extremely quick staccato, like say in here:

Around 00:40

Stuff like that cannot be achieved with 1,000 noise gates. All that is editing in the mix, chopping the beginnings and end of the each individual note, just thought that should be noted as a lot of people don't realize that. cool.gif

Respectfully I have to disagree, as personally I could employ a noise gate to actually prevent having to do a massive amount of editing after the fact. Of course, no single statement made by me is me to be a blanket "in all cases". The point was to illustrate that, as was mentioned, a refined gate setting is important when playing very quick bits with silent gaps. The shorter the silent gap, the more important the gate setting. You can skip the gate and edit by hand in your DAW of course. Not every software/hardware gate is good/quick/clean enough to clamp down musically at just the right moment. I still love the gate in my ancient digitech gnx 3 as it works amazingly well with the onboard compressor and clamps hard without creating a leftover sound artifacts.

So like many things, there are many, many ways to get to a given result. This thread, especially, and the patch we are talking about with two gates, is partially intended for just the type of thing you seem to be talking about in the youtube video. Granted, using a razor blade in a DAW would be more precise. But this thread is not about using a daw, it's just about sharing a guitar patch. smile.gif
