Aaaaaaaaaaalrighty then !! We're continuing down our mellow road of balladry smile.gif

I really like this lesson from Ivan because it's got some great bends and melody lines. I wanted to point out one interesting thing.. at around 0:11, you'll notice how Ivan deliberately plays the note a little behind the beat. This is a really important aspect of blues playing and in guitar playing in general. The ability to stagger notes around the beat however you want to yet still make it sound intentional.. that's a big part of what we always refer to as 'feel'.

Another thing is try not forget everything you've learned about your own vibrato style.. don't feel like you have to emulate the vibrato of the instructors in the videos.. play their lines but allow it to sound like you. You're doing a good job of it so far anyway but i just wanted to mention it smile.gif

Cool, I hope you enjoy.. wait, I think I've been too nice this week...

Right, you snivelling cowards, you poor excuses of guitar players ! Grab your tools of the trade and earn your food ! Any slacking on the job will be met with discipline.. and not the kind of discipline that you like ! ph34r.gif

(That feels better now..)

Deadline is, of course, 1 week from now - Friday 6th July (already ? wow, the months fly by so fast...)

Hey Ben,
I'm not trying to rush things, but I think I will earn an other donnut ! biggrin.gif
Here is my attempt. It lacks of smoothness (?) and there are some "little" timing issues. I don't know how to work on this. The improvisations I do with Alex help me a lot, but there is still a lot to learn...
Tell me what you really think. You can oint out a lot of problem if needed, I won't cry, as a warrior cannot weep in front of his Sensei.

And as says David Walliman : Salut.

Bonjour ! Cafe au lait sil vous plait smile.gif

(Just testin' out my French - excuse the random statements)

I think you might be expecting worse criticism than it actually deserves because there's nothing wrong with the take except that maybe the vibrato and vending could be a bit more confident and even. The timing sounds fine smile.gif

The tone doesn't help you.. those digital software tones can't quite replicate the same sound as turning the gain down on an amp. Instead of getting a mild, clean distortion you get a fizzy tone.. that's not your fault, I've experience the same angry bee tone myself many times biggrin.gif

You can hold your head up high, young warrior, as you go to collect your well deserved Donut smile.gif

Boulangerie !

This drives me absolutely CRAZY. Guitar Rig is one of the coolest musical purchases I've made. It's perfect for someone like me who doesn't want to spend a fortune but still get a huge variety of amps and effects to get about any sound I want to achieve but what Ben mentions is my biggest complaint by far. The volume knob acts completely different through the computer than it does through an amp. Just no real control over the drive. Mine seems to go from full drive to basically nothing. I've gone as far as to set up duplicate patches next to each other, one with less drive just so I can get a good sound when going back and forth from less gain to more gain and back. It's a real pain in the ass but I've given up on the volume knob.

I'll also say that I'm stuck on Guitar Rig 3 so I'm a couple generations back and it may have gotten better in the newer versions. Not sure.

Anyway, sorry to jump in and whine for a minute. Rant over. biggrin.gif

By the way, sounding good GrindGuer! smile.gif

Hi again - Here goes my weeks effort on this Ballad. Again not perfect cause if it was I'd be the Sensei and not the apprentice.

http://soundcloud.com/zoomify/ballad-for-everyone

Oh and I've had to play the end part on my B sting cause I've only got 21 frets on my strat and havn't made it to shop to get new strings for my musicman.
I ran a marathon last weekend so I was late getting on the mountain this week. (hehe good excuse!!) biggrin.gif

Zooooom ! Actually, running a marathon is a very good excuse !! laugh.gif

Thanks for your take, I'm very pleased with it.. at the beginning it was a bit rushed but you calmed down when you realised the backing track wasn't going anywhere wink.gif

Bending was generally good too.. a couple near the end sounded a bit sharp if anything - you're too strong for the strings laugh.gif

Joking aside, well done man smile.gif Righto, I'll be serving more guitar mischief your way very soon guys...... smile.gif

Hi

Besides the timing and smoothness issues, I was trying to work out the best way to get
those multi-string rakes in near the end. I was very inconsistent with using my picking hand to mute the strings.
It felt better using my index finger of my fretting hand, but I had trouble getting the index finger back in position
for that little pull-off after that second bend. So for this take I just attempted the single string rake.
Do you have a preferred method for muting those strings in that situation?

Hail brother Moss ! This sounds good.. just watch the pitch on those bends, they went a bit sharp.

I've listened a few times and I'm not sure I know exactly which bits you're referring to, apart from the general end section.. but in regards to muting I would definitely use my picking hand by anchoring the thumb side near the lower strings and covering all strings except the B & top E. Of course, when doing this you don't actually calculate which exact strings are muted or not, you just get a feel for it after a while but the muting itself allows you to rake through the notes and get those blunt sounding 'plink, plink' deadened strings. Use the outside edge of your hand, karate chop style, to rest over the strings. You don't have to hold your fingers out straight like a karate chop, it's just to show you which side wink.gif Whilst doing this you can still rotate your hand and pick as normal.. it's ok for the hand itself to move whilst muting, as long as the strings are still being covered somehow. It's all about contact of the hand on the strings - hopefully that helps ! smile.gif

Aside from that, what you're doing with the left hand is also good. As I always say, good string muting is a marriage between right and left hand technique. The more clean and confident the fretting hand is with the patterns, the less chance of hitting unwanted strings with the underside of a finger or catching a lower string with a fingertip when pulling off etc.
