Kemper Profiling Amp, What do you think

In short this thing looks like capable of replicating a tube realistically. I must admit I got sucked in by the Pod HD 500 marketing hype and regret buying the unit as I later sold it. This thing looks like the real deal though, it's a lot of money for a hobbyist but I've been trying to replicate a realistic high gain tone for so long without large expensive equipment. It "profiles" sonic waves or something. If its true this thing could really take off and I can see bands trying to copyright their tone or something lol.

Thoughts?

This is absolutely amazing! I am in a process of getting one for myself! Sims like a very good amp that can do anything!

I had quite a long discussion with a friend who used to be a senior software engineer for Sony/Sonnox about emulations, modellers etc. Our experience was the same albeit Paul could add a lot more technical detail and explanation. In short whilst these things are certainly improving they are not yet 100% realistic - close but not 100%. Having said that they may be close enough, particularly if not placed side by side with whatever they are emulating and if they are part of a more elaborate processing chain, to pass for the majority of people most of the time.

Great comment! Tony is right about this... by the way, getting one would be great! I use POD hd 500 and upgrading to this one would a great improvement.

Run a search in the forums for KEMPER and you'll see wads of posts about this beast. In short, it's a miracle of technology but now that the AXE EFFECTS rack mount unit from Fractal Audio does something similar, it's got serious competition. The kemper is simply better at profiling amps, but the Axe FX is superior with routing, fx, etc. If you are really wanting to replicate amp tone, go kemper! If you want to emulate amp tone and stuff all your pedals/rack gear in one unit, get an Axe Effects smile.gif

The Kemper is for sure interesting and I don't even dare to imagine what the future still holds for us, with so many cool tools being developed. I am using my Axe FX 2 and I am more than happy with it, but I have to admit that I didn't even try the Tone Matching features yet, actually I didn't even upgrade my firmware from 5.7 to the up to date 6.2, I don't like messing around with this while being on the road (and yes, I am also using it live on stage, not only my Rectifiers).
But since we just officially ended our latest world tour (which kept us on he road for almost the last 2 years) I am about to update my Axe FX and give it a try as well, I am curious!

The tour was long, awesome, sometimes tiresome, a lot of fun, very successful and unfortunately it kept me from being here on GMC, but as mentioned before, the tour is over ;-)

We loved to play Argentina again, specially after we had to cancel the Buenos Aires show on the last tour when we got stuck at the airport in Brazil for 12 hours. Be sure we will be back witht he next tour ;-)
@ Alex: You can play the ards Song? Cool, we should jam some time ;-) About the Kemper, I would also be interested in reviews. I am always interested in cool new products like that!

I'm actually torn between the Kemper and the Axe FX-2. Both look to be great units with very good strengths and will accomplish my needs with nighttime playing. I guess I'm with everyone else in a few months we will find out! biggrin.gif

Well, I never used the Kemper myself, so I can't say much about it aside from what I heard (so most likely I know the same as you), but I am using the Axe FX 2 since about one year and it is incredible! Whatever sound you are looking for, whatever effect you might need, whatever amp, cab or mic you want to use, it is right there... I absolutely love it

Hello world!

I the alien toaster from outerspace has come to visit!

Well I've had it 2 hours, unpacking and such. Setup was fairly easy after you do the anti-guy thing... Read the manual! laugh.gif So I ran it via my Mesa head, sounds good but weird. Thinking that maybe I should have turned off the cabinet simulator now that I typed this.

Well here is a clip of just rushing a clip out for you all. All I did was put a 120/8500 HP/LP filter on it. The rest was flat on the unit as well. Like I said just tossing a clip up.

http://soundcloud.com/spasemoonkey/kpa-test

Trying to get a friend to come over to play it while I tinker it. But right now I'm going to upgrade it to the new patch.

The Kemper Profiling Amp is a very interesting item indeed, a studio owner brought one in to the shop I work at in London for us to audition.

We are predominantly a repair and luthier store with a retail business of upgrade components and vintage equipment so you could say we are biased towards the "vintage is best" and "analogue is king" crowd. This is obviously a gross exaggeration but helps my point praising the Kemper.

I didn't have much time to demo the unit myself, but I was very impressed with his run through. Being able to easily (relatively speaking) model your own amps and set-up and indeed any amp could be game changing. As with any technology the market will decide on its success however I would happily say we were all sold on the unit and have even become dealers of the Kemper since.

We have yet to receive our first batch but once we do we will have to do some intensive A/B'ing as we are a fortunate to often have some true vintage items.

I think the possibility of profiling an amp and storing it into a device like the Kemper or Axe FX is amazing. And what I love even more is that those software based setups can be improved with every little firmware update smile.gif I see a bright future ahead of us
