I've noticed one of the problems I'm having with this is, If I start the first section on a downstroke (as you normally would) there is more inside picking when traversing the strings. I'm experimenting with starting on an upstroke and doing Ben's inside outside picking lesson to get better at inside picking too!

I'll try and post a clean take of it at 170 bpm tomorrow so you can give feedback

Great decision. Yeah, the best is to be able to cross string smoothly in both ways. Curiously I find outside picking more difficult because the distance is longer when you want to pick the following string.

That Ben's lesson is good! also check this lesson:

Hi mate! Thanks for the update! I can see that you are not still very comfortable with the first two sections but it's something that will be fixed with more days of practice. Are you working on any other thing?

Just my Alt Picking with Todd, I'm on his beginner lesson with that as I've just started with him.

If you have any other suggestions for lessons to work on

Keep on practising the skate punk lesson and let's start working on some song analysis, what do you think?

Nothing particularly hard, but mainly the arrangement of parts is really good

Cool tracks!! I'm going to enjoy this!! smile.gif

Ok, here we go, start with the one that you prefer and complete this analysis:

Song Analysis:

Name of the song:
Name of the band:

Structure // What is happening? // Chords & Scales

Structure: You will divide the tune in Intro - Riff - Verse - Pre chorus- - Chorus - Solo - Part C and so... You can add the letters A, B, C to the sections when you find different ones in the same tune (Ex: Verse A, Verse B, Chorus, Solo A, Solo)

what is happening?: Here you will describe each part. You can explain how is the part, if it has vocals, screams, melodies, harmonizations, how much is last, how many measures, etc. Every information that could be useful to understand the part.

Chords & Scales: Here you will post the tonality, the chord progression and the scales used for the melodies and solos.

I've got some time to concentrate on this now.

I was going to do the one which was furthest out of my comfort zone, but I thought I'd go for the one closest to what I want to do!

This Is Letting Go
Rise Against

Key Fm (guitars are probably tuned down to D and so playing in Gm)

Intro

Rhythm Guitar (all loosely strummed)

1 bar G5 to start
G5 Bb5 Eb5
G5 Bb5 Eb5 Drums, bass and Lead Guitar Kicks in (on the Eb5) based on a Bb triad shape on top strings
G5 Bb5 Eb5 F5 and down into Gm pent

F5 sliding to G5 7 bars Lead guitar repeats similar riff but goes up at end
1 full bar of just F5 8th notes leading into first verse

V1

Rhythm guitar 8th note muted (predominantly left speaker)
G5 Eb5 Bb5 F5

No drums or bass in first line
2nd guitar 1st beat big strum G5

harmony vocals and gang vocals come in 2nd half of verse

Lead guitar line comes in on last line

Run down by bass and maybe guitar octaves of Eb D C Bb F leading to chorus

Pick slide!!!

Chorus

The famous I V vi IV ( Bb F Gm Eb)

Gang vocals

Lead guitar octave lines

Riff
F5 sliding to G5 7 bars Lead guitar variation of riff in intro
1 full bar of just F5 8th notes leading into first verse

V2

More chugging bass heavy, drums floor tom and kick emphasis than V1 giving more space

2nd line vocal harmony

3rd line lead guitar feedback an A into simple lead line

rundown and pick slide as in v1

Ch

Same as Ch 1 until end line

'Path to take me home'

Riff G A Bb C Bb A - Eb5 4 stabs B A G F (?) F5

Bridge

G5 (4bars) Bb5 (2bars) F5 (2 bars)

Chugging Rhythm and bass half time Lead guitar riff of F and g on high string

Pick scrape!

Bridge repeated at full speed Using G5 Eb5 Bb5 F5 and strumming rhythm

Last line repeated (instead of using riff to go to chorus)

Ch3 quiet start

Comes in full at 'this is letting go'

Repeating of I'm letting of you 2nd vocal 'This is letting go'

Then repeating of This is letting go

Ends on first line of V1

Excellent analysis mate! This track is very clear and the only irregular sections are the part c (or bridge) and the coda. It seems that they followed the lyrics in part C, but it really works... it's a dramatic take that makes tension grow to explode in the chorus.

The idea is that you keep this analysis and keep on working on new songs, these concepts will start being incorporated in your mind at the moment of composing a song...

I found it really useful and I was amazed how focused I had to be to really listen to what was going on. As I do more of this I hope I'll be able analyse the bass and drum parts more

Sure! and don't forget the vocals. How composers (sometimes the singers) create the melodies, what notes they use over each chord and how the rhythm is worked.

Hey Gab, even though I've changed my focus to a more American Roots Rock type thing, I'd still value your guidance and mentoring.

Especially as I start to work on things like hybrid picking which while I'm a fairly good fingerpicker is completely knew to me.

Cool! What lessons are you working right now? Feel free to share your videos there to let me give you feedback.
Have you heard John 5's Country Shred songs?

I'm working on Blues-Lines

I'm not much of a John 5 fan, but I've heard some of his stuff.

I'm looking at players like David Grissom, Marc Ford, Tom Bukovac as well as the country shredders out there, so a mix of blues rock, country and soul.

I know my blues based playing is very limited and poor as I've avoided it,
