My pick has the following wear on it:

[attachment=31477:1.png]

[attachment=31478:8.png]
What does this mean? Do I angle my pick too much? Do I show too much of the pick? Why are only one side rub down? Why isnt' worn out evenly across the pick?

How does your pick look? Do you have the same questions as me? No or Yes? Please Discuss!

My pick usually looks like yours, i don't think that you are doing something wrong... I don't have one with me now, but I will post a pick later.

I'd say it's normal wear. It has to do with the angle between pick and string, which is a matter of how you learn. The tone varies a bit depending on angle.

My worn picks look pretty much just like yours Blitz, Although maybe not worn quite as high up on the pick , I think maybe I choke up on the pick a bit more than you do and use just the very tip of it.

I carved a pick out of some wood last week...modelled on the shape of a Jazz III. I drilled some holes in it for grip, I also shaped it a bit where my thumb and forefinger go, so its a one-way pick or feels strange the wrong way.It needs to be made out of harder wood as I am sure it got slightly blunter after playing a few hours...although it does give a nice 'woody' tone!!
The next ones I'll make out of olive wood as there is an abundance of olive trees here where I live.

Recently had a guy at music shop throw me a bunch of accessories. Strings picks tools. Threw me like 4 different types of picks all 1.0 mm. And the tortex sharp picks are great. I like how pointy they are and seem toake me able to hit the string when and how I want to much better and wear much less than other picks I've used.
Here's a link.

I started to use tortex picks (1.5mm) and I love them. I get a clearer tone at higher speeds with this one. I really recommend them for ever shredder.

I use bright colors just cause they are easier to find when there laying all over the place. And the sharp I was talking about are actually the dunlop ultex sharps 1.0.

He is talking about the

DUNLOP SHARP

Picks which we actually talked about in our Video Chat Session this weekend. I gave a short lecture on various pointed picks from various vendors. Were you there for that one? We actually talked about the DUNLOP SHARP and I showed several examples from the 1.0mm to 1.15mm and the 1.35mm. All of those are a tad thin IMHO and GAB is spot on suggesting the 1.5 MM it's the best of the batch of the Dunlop Sharps IMHO smile.gif

I don't know if you can really see it from this photo, but here's 3 of my Dunlop Sharp 1.14mm slowly wearing away after much use! As you can see, the logo fades starting from the edge, and the one side of the pick gets rubbed down over time. I guess it's due to the angle of the pick, much like yours Todd, I sometimes flip the pick and use the other side to prolong it's life a bit.

ps: If your wondering, that's my Razer Goliathus (Gamer's) mouse pad in the background.

Yup smile.gif The Dunlop Sharp. They are one of Dunlops Finest. And that thickness is Perfect IMHO.

Many players are adding these to their arsenal. They are almost Jazz III pickups on steroids smile.gif Bit thicker, better grip, nice beveled edge.

The one thing the DUNLOP SHARP lacks is a beveled edge. You can add one with a sharp knife ( have to carve my clayton picks to a beveled point) and I prefer a beveled edge to non beveled. But like most things it's something that comes down to the player in each case.

The Dunlop Sharp (though not beveled) are a big leap forward IMHO over the standard Tortex Dunlop. It's great to see bigger vendors finally embracing pointy picks in a big way smile.gif I've been banging on about it for years and then suddently BAM everyone makes pointy picks! Well, everyone but CLAYTON!!! ARRRGHHHH!!!!!! That's why I eventually found Vinnie and Vpicks. He would make them pointy and smooth or pointy and beveled on request. And the material is close to what I like in the CLAYTON picks. The tone is much brighter than the TORTEX but it's not for everyone. Some folks find it too bright and chirpy.

Yeah Gabe! You can get them here, for instance: http://www.thomann.de/ro/dunlop_ultex_jazz...hn_petrucci.htm But the delivery cost is about 30 euro, which means about 6 times the cost of the picks laugh.gif Pretty silly, right?

The PRS dealer here, also sells Dunlop, so I got them from him. They feel a little tiny at first, but then, after more playing, your hand gets used to them and the movements are reduced when picking. For me, I think it was a matter of the mind telling me that I need to move less with the hand because the pick is smaller laugh.gif wicked huh?

Every time wink.gif Speaking of pointy picks, Jeff Loomis has signature picks that look just like the dunlop sharps. They might actually be dunlop sharps smile.gif Here is a pic.

Attached Image

Not to say using a rounded, or thin, or thin and rounded pick is a bad thing. Some folks LOVE them thin and rounded. And God bless em. smile.gif But like everything else in guitar, it (broken record) comes down to the player.
