Is there an effective use of echo/reverb other than making you sound like you're in a stadium or a large bathroom?

I often here people playing across the internet and their sounds are obviously enhanced by these effects and I never realise what it is until they stop playing and the echo is heard. I tend to never use anything that echoes distinctly after I stop. I play'flat/dead 'as I am always thinking that the echo will put me off and throw my concentration....If you can explain the usages of these effects as tools...for a layman like me...without saying its a matter of taste...I'd appreciate it. If this is a daft question , I won't be offended if you use words instead of wasting precious time on a video!!!

Hey Cosmin....That was brilliant thanks.You answered from your perspective, something that for some reason often raises a question in my head. It was reassuring that you said what you did, as my mind often seeks more than what is probably actually there..(I hope you know what I mean.) You did well avoiding the ' it's a matter of taste' quote, when it is probably just a matter of taste..adding a bit of reverb/echo to the raw recording until you like the results.(It still puts me off a bit using any effects when practising...apart from gain and overdrive.)
I'll try and think of a better question next time...

I may have a question

How / when to use whole tone scale in solos. I mean if I'm playing for example solo in phygian dominant and I want to use this sound of whole tone scale (in the way as some modern metal guitarists do, like Jeff Loomis etc) should I change the key and then use this scale? Should the new backing track be composed in any specific way, like for example only using one note?

Is there any common way (some kind of well known standard) to do it? Im interested especially in modern metal environment.
Would be great if you could show some example.

You showed me how you think of melodies and you sing it and then play it on the guitar, that's good for solos! And really helped me out, thanks for that!

But now, here's my problem: I have the melody (the lead part), I need to put some chords behind it. How would you approach this challenge?

If it can be answered in a written reply, by all means, do that! If you're more comfortable recording a video, that's swell! By any way you want, I'd appreciate if you can point me in the right direction as you did when you told me how to make up melody lines

Wow, Cos you never fail to amaze me you made up such a beautiful melody and explained everything I wanted to know all in six minutes, man you know how to wow I'm gonna save this link, its been so helpful because since you told me how to come up with melody lines, I have a bunch of lead lines which sound cool but I wasn't able to figure out any chords for them. Thinking about the bass notes, that never crossed my mind thanks a lot bro you're awesome!

Great Cosmin, beautiful pattern. It's a little bit difficult to use all the fingers in such a little space, but thats what exercises are for!!
