Hi Sam, I think that the secret there is a long sustain generated with the use of a compressor or maybe an overdrive like tube screamer before the amp and the use of reverb to make it sound big. What gear are you using nowadays?

On ben's tone example, it does sound like a pretty mid forward pickup. For emg's though you could make a mid boost (guessing around 2khz) with an eq.

Hey Gab, thanks for the guide I'm using the same old gear I had since last year I don't really get much money to gear myself up, although I am going to change my EMG passives to EMG 81/85 soon I did play a gig with my laptop on my amp and guitar rig's output going to the sound system they had at the place, but I think the sound system sucked Based on this thread: LINK You should be able to get a similar tone experimenting with free plug-ins. I haven't used/tested them myself, but you could get these 'MrScary' custom pickups:
http://mrscaryguitars.com/pickups/ First of all, George Lynch's guitar and Alnico 8 magnet pickups are custom built, then he feeds the signal via multiple amps. He uses a Cusack Screamer V2 for overdrive on the solo boosts which was a gift to him by Jon Cusack. George’s signal x2 flow is as follows: –Guitar–>Morley Dragon Wah–>Cusack Screamer V2–>MXR Phase 90–>Boss –Guitar–>Chorus CE-5–>Boss Octave OC-2–>Fullton DejaVibe–>Framptone Amp Switcher… With the Framptone Amp Switcher being used as a splitter, main signal going to the input, with channel B output to the Boss GE-10 EQ (set to -10db and the main level set to just a pinch above the zero notch)…from there going to the main Randall Lynch Box head with the primary module being the “Mr. Scary.” Channel A goes to the Randall Lynch Box head with the primary module being the “Brahma.” Uses at least 2, if not 3 amp heads! Not sure about this, but from what is been said around the net... The setup for George's guitar tone on "Under Lock And Key" was as follows: "We had two Marshall heads and two Laney heads, not sure which models, but one of them was a Plexi. We had cabs in three different rooms: two cabs were placed in the big room at Amigo, one connected to a Marshall, the other connected to the Laney. The Marshall was responsible for the high end part of the sound and the Laney was set to take care of the low end. There were 14 (fourteen) mics set up in that room in various psoitions around the cabinet and some further away to get some room tone. The second Laney was sent into a very dead room and had a Boss chorus pedal in front of it, set to very slight chorus. The second Marshall was sent into a small, tiled bathroom, to add a different room tone. Those 16 mics came in on the MCI 500 console mic pres. They were bussed to one bus and that bus had a UREI 530 EQ on it (best guitar EQ ever). George mentioned that he always gets a great tone with his Fostex 4track recorder when it's in total overdrive, so I asked him to bring it in. So after the 530 everything was sent to the Fostex 4track, which lived under a packing blanket under the console, so nobody would see it. The Fostex was on stunn, completely overdriven and was sent on to the 3M 32 track dig machine from there." So all I really can see from that is he tends to want to hide the main juice factor of his tone and goes into great lends to setup the amp positions? I think there's some phaser in there as Ben said. Phasers have always escaped me. You should check out jammit.com The app is pretty cool in that you can split out the tracks from the original master recordings, and really listen to them and learn the parts (not to mention checking out the tones and how they were recorded). There's a lot of Dokken songs available, including Mr. Scary (as well as other metal like Megadeth, Priest, Dream Theater, etc). The app is free, and songs are about $4 each - I think a small price to pay for what you are getting... Interesting pickups.. but I'm bent on trying actives for now, so if I'm going to get those, it'll have to wait You've done quite a bit of research on this, haven't you? Great information in there! Although the 2-3 amp head thing seems kinda scary to me I built a "lynch tone" in overloud a bit back and shared it in the overloud thread but I don't know if your an overloud user? He uses a good bit of compression that's a result of a cranked tube amp. Also, a bit of delay and reverb which is partly why his pinch harmonics are so distinctive. I ripped off some of that when I built my own tones as I've always liked his lead tone Here is a vid some some of his better solos / tones and some of his most unfortunate hair/fashion choices He sort of looks like Satchel from Steel Panther in some of these vids but the again Satchel patterned himself partly on George Lynch as he's a huge fan Speaking of great tone, here is George Lynch playing on a Tony Mcalpine tune ( a classic shred track) called TEARS OF SAHARA. Not many folks know that George played guest solos on this album (MAXIMUM SECURITY) on two tracks. If you listen, you can tell which solos on this track are George and which are Tony George relased this song on his own in 2000 in a CD called WILL PLAY FOR FOOD. I'm an overloud user, yeah I'll look for the preset in the thread. Hahah yeah his hair styles and nice vid, I'm always amazed whenever I listen to Lynch, he's full of surprises |

Yep, I'm using reverb. I think there's some phaser in there as Ben said. Phasers have always escaped me. yes, phaser is very notorious in the link that Ben shared here. I didn't note it as an effect in the first video but if you want to get that live sound you should definitely also experiment with phaser. -------------------- My lessons
