Hehe!

See, it's a never ending journey actually and I for one am curious as well to see what folks have in mind smile.gif

IN the mean time, I'll be bugging you till the weekend to see the vids smile.gif

I was curious about one thing tho - are you posting rarely because it takes time until you perfect the lessons, or it takes less time, but life gets in the way? Just curious to see what your pace is wink.gif

My weekend starts on friday, so it will be sooner than you think!

As for my posting, Its a combination. I like to get the lessons just right, otherwise they dont get past you to the recs tongue.gif I also seem to pick lessons that are out of my comfort zone.
Life is also an issue! I started a full time job last month. Its been a long while since I had a proper job, so its taking some getting used to. Having energy to do any thing was a problem at the start. the main problem now is time management. and having too many things to do/learn.Having had so much time in the past makes it harder to adjust to having a hell of a lot less! Im getting better at it though! more organized now.

Oh, and the world cup is ruining my progress this month too! tongue.gif

Aha, I see, I see smile.gif

Well, reason number one is a pretty important one and I think that dedicating conscious time to playing and writing music is basically the most important thing here, so that's very good!

In respect to time management - what else do you do aside the job? Maybe there's a way in which I can share my experience with time juggling - I have GMC, private students here in Romania, a company, sword fencing, 2 bands and trying to build a relationship so that I won't end up as a lonely old man with 6 cats laugh.gif

As for sports - I've never ever been into football or anything else that involves balls laugh.gif Aside basketball which I played in highschool, I was mostly a fitness and since 2-3 years ago a martial arts aficionado.

Let's see how we can discuss time management so that you could get the most of your practice time smile.gif

Ok, Videos didnt turn out anywhere as well as i'd hoped. was really hard to get decent takes. Today is just not my day it seems.

The tool lesson is coming along, not up to speed yet, but close. Those are starting to show up more I think

The Intervals etude, also not quite there yet. I still have a subconscious habit to go to my old picking style instead of the new one. I didnt realize how bad my thumb position was in the vid! needs more slow concentrated practice it seems.

What do you think??

Im going to dig through my "come back to folder and see if there's anything a worked on before that might be ready to try again.

As for time management, there's a fair bit on my plate atm. though I have stopped a few things as it was just for too much to handle.

so, there's

- Guitar stuff = GMC lessons, Ear training, Learning songs, Mixing/Recording, ect, ect....

- German study - Spend about an hour a day at the moment, My grammar is pretty bad and needs study for work.

- Exercises - About 30 mins of my physio exercises for my arm and also a light w/out

- General life/household stuff

- Girlfriend - She needs love and attention too, Nothing wrong with that!

If I analyze myself a little, I think one major issue is procrastination. For some reason I can also find things to do and leave guitar for last. But when I do pick it up, I cant but it down again! Its that silly start that's the problem. Its like when you know you should do some sports, You couldnt be bothered but when you do finally start so so glad you did.!
I also find that the GMC lessons I work on can be demotivating. They can be difficult and I just cant get them right, getting recs done can be really frustrating as they often sound like crap, ect... Today is a good example of this

Anyways, Lets see what your side of the story is.

Tim

Hey mate smile.gif First of all - the vids biggrin.gif

- the tool one needs a bit more definition in those pull offs in the beginning - the notes need to be heard clearly, but otherwise, it's all good if you come to ask me smile.gif

- the intervals - thank you for the video man! You kind of figured it out yerself biggrin.gif You need to diminish the motions of both left and right hand now. Look at the part in which you are playing thirds - even if they are closer as intervals from a geometrical perspective on the fretboard, your movements are much smaller in comparison to every other type of intervals biggrin.gif Look at the vid and you'll know what I'm saying wink.gif

Also, picking flat is not helping that much at all smile.gif Now, you know what you have to focus:

- movement reduction at a slow speed so that you can control it
- picking angle

About the schedule, here's what I have in mind - procrastination is a REALLY dangerous thing and believe me, I am dealing with it more often than I'd like to admit, but one solution would be:

Start the day doing the things which are really important such as practicing, for instance:

- if you leave for work at 8 AM, get up at 6 and practice an hour without internet, phone or any other distractions
- if you come home at 6 take an hour and a half from 07.00 to 08.30 in which you practice for chunks of 30 minutes in the same environment. No phone, no internet no nothing, 30 minutes practice, 5 minutes break smile.gif

If you manage to do this - you have 2 hours and 30 minutes of solid practice/day smile.gif How do you split time in general?

Hey Cosmin,

Thanks for your analysis of the vids. The tool one is frustrating me as im working on it slooooow, but when it goes up in speed I just cant get it! The Intervals is coming along nicely, Been working on it all week! After watching the vid, it all became obvious!

Thanks for the schedule suggestions too. Im slowly working it all out and getting a system together. I have changing shifts at work on a weekly basis, so my practice schedule changes with it.
One week I have early shifts (6.30-15.00), Not much chance of me getting up even earlier on these weeks, So I get my practice done the second I get home as to not get too comfy doing other things.
Every other week I do late shifts (10.30-19.00) This is where I do the split practice. I'll get up earlier and get my main practice done in the morning before work, then squeeze a little more in in the evening.

It sounds silly but, your suggestion of the 5 min breaks every 30min is something I never do. My practice needs to more structured/timed, not with a stopwatch, but bit more time control and breaks would make it all more efficient. I usually work on whatever im working on until im satisfied with it before moving to the next thing on the list, not exactly the most efficient way.
I'm also aiming to get the things on my practice list that some always get left for last or not done at all, done first up. get them out of the way. (pretty silly too!) (Procrastination much)

So, Still a work in progress, but coming together slowly. This week I was a good boy and worked on my gmc Lessons everyday this week! not to mention the rest of the list. It was a good week!
Tomorrow I m planning to work on the Slash track again and get an updated mix done. I'll keep you posted on it.'

Ok, Otherwise, all is well. Hopefully on your side too. I'll try to get a vid posted this week

Hey Tim,

Got back to you a lil late smile.gif Had a rough week - I heard there were some weird radiations or so, which kind of affected the weather and me as well. I started feeling ok about 2 days ago, so everything is back to normal!

Now, adapting your practicing to your schedule is a great idea and I am very glad that I could bring in something new with them breaks smile.gif Looks like you have an idea on the new approach, so I am waiting on your input regarding how it feels and how productive it can get. Deal?

Hey Cosmin!

I'm back! Back to the real world! Back to work. Back to guitar!

Me and my G/friend did a road trip down the Croatian coast! Down through Austria and Slovenia and then cruised down the coast right down to Dubrovnik! Made some great stops along the way! Such a beautiful country! Then We took a ferry over to Italy and slowly made our way back up to Germany through Switzerland. Italy is a bit too hectic for my liking! tongue.gif Still good though! In retrospect, it was a bit too ambitious as there wasn't really much time to relax! We did spend a couple days camping on an amazingly blue watered beach in south croatia, so all ok I guess. Would have loved to stayed longer though!

Scotland is fantastic!I spent nearly a week there a few years ago. Had a great trip! nothing bad to say (except the weather tongue.gif) Hope you have a blast! I assume your visiting Edinburgh, that place is pretty cool! Oh and have some Haggis! its actually pretty good despite its reputation!

Anyways, ill look over everything I've been working on lately and get back into it. See If i can get that mix finalized.(again tongue.gif )
I'll keep you posted.
Oh, and ill look into the practice schedule we talked about.

Sweet Jesus! What a trip biggrin.gif

Well, after seeing so much, I do believe you are ready for playing wink.gif Are you, mate? Please let me know what your status is once you get settled in, ok?

About Scotland - I'll be seeing Aberdeen pretty often from now on smile.gif My girl will study there and I'll go see her each month wink.gif A tough situation, but one I had to accept, because I want her to follow her dream and if we can stick together, it's really amazing.

Otherwise, let's set up a schedule for the next week and see how it goes - based on what you are currently working on - deal?

Ready indeed!

Got a couple things on this weekend, but next week is clearing up so I should be able to get the ball rolling again.

As for long distance relationships, I'm all for them! Me and my girl did it for a few years visiting/living with each other periodically before I came permanently to Europe 3 years ago. I was in Australia and she was in Holland, so regular visits were a bit difficult! Scotland is just around the corner! wink.gif It can be tough going at times, but I think if it's meant to be, both people will find a way to make it work. I wish you both all the best!

Anyway, Practice schedule

I did a rough outline of what im planning to do

15min - Ear Training

15min - Jam/warm up

20min - Main GMC Lessons - eg. tool lesson, Intervals Preparing for Rec

20min - Other GMC Lessons - New and early work in progresses

20min - Rec attempt or New Music learning

Extra-bonus time - Work on mixes/Write New Music

Its pretty rough, but it covers the main things im currently aiming for. It will be good to get into the habit of having a structured practice schedule. Also, I will make "Write New Music" as a daily thing once I get into the swing of things.
I've delayed finishing the slash track as I'm in the process of getting new Headphones as mine are dying and were never that good anyway! In the meantime Im working through some mixing basic videos from Graham from the recording revolution. Im really getting a lot out of these vids!

Any suggestions or comments on this? Or should we just try it out?

Hey Tim!

Jesus man, you have no idea how encouraging your words are to me in respect to the long distance stuff biggrin.gif Thank you! It will be tough indeed, but hey, what's not tough in this life?

About the schedule, let's try it out for a week and see the results - I think that would be the best starting point, in my opinion and I also salute the fact that you started learning mixing in the serious way and writing music as well.

Your music is the most important thing you can do! It's your personal way of expression and it should be treated as such - people write too little music then they should be, if you come to ask me smile.gif

Let's see how it goes and I would also add a 15 minutes time to write down the important theoretical aspects, concepts and observations on yourself at the end of the day smile.gif You should be able to look at yourself and notice what your pluses and minuses are wink.gif That's very important as it is the thing that actually sets the trail for the future!

Hi Cosmin

Busy, busy had a mad work week last week covering peoples holiday times, and the free time i had was taken up by life's little surprises ( most of them were good though! smile.gif )

But this weeks been good! I've done the schedule since sunday. Though I didnt do your analysis bit you suggested. I just noticed it then, so i'll include it tomorrow. Its been hard to keep within the time frames for each section though, tough to stay focused! Im sure it will get easier! I made a quick vid on the two lessons we're working on too.

The mixing stuff im learning is basic concepts. There is so much info out there and it mostly advanced methods and fancy this, fancy that. The basics are usually forgotten. Thats why I got into this video series, It starts at the bottom and thoroughly explains concepts, components, basic equipment like Eq and compression. All that stuff. It has been very worthwhile. Though I havnt done any mixing work since, I feel as if I have a much better grasp on it then before. Im excited for my new headphone to arrive so I can put them to use!

As for the long distance thing, Im always happy to encourage it. Over the years we've run across many people who are totally against the idea and try to convince you to wake up and move on with life. It's totally possible and worthwhile if it works! I'm not sure if we would have worked out in a normal situation. The distance may have done us good sometimes! tongue.gif

Anyway, Back to work. Let me know your thoughts on the vid. Hopefully I can finish these soon and move on again!

Hey Tim!

How are you man? biggrin.gif First things first - I watched the vid and here are my thoughts:

- I think the Tool lessons sounds MUCH more defined and indeed working with your finger tips is a good way to obtain definition. I usually strive for playing with my fingertips as perpendicular as possible when the context asks for it and this would be such a context for certain.

- I noticed a very interesting thing in the Intervals recording - you are playing the phrases in 4/4 but they are in 6/8 smile.gif It's not that bad since it's an exercise and it can be approached this way as well, out of what I am noticing, so can you please make a 6/8 recording as well, just like the original?

I would be curious to see the series of videos about mixing too smile.gif If you can share of course wink.gif Keep on working and please share your thoughts on the analysis part as well - you never know what sort of interesting things you might find out about yourself - such as the fingertips thing smile.gif Deal?

Hey Cosimn

I'm doing great! Busy,but great!

Great to hear that the tool lesson has improved!

As for the Intervals lesson, thats a very interesting point you make! never really even noticed the different time signature! They're something Im not really good /familiar with. Maybe a topic to look into in the future!
So i played around with it in 6/8 today. It has quite a different feel! Especially the last ascending run! Is this because of the changed accents? Ill Practice it some more and try to do a vid for you tomorrow.

With the mix vids, normally I would share these kind of things, but because they are paid for content i dont really want to openly share them as I like to support the creator. They are the "jumpstart series" from the recording revolution. I picked them up a while back for cheap(25 Euro?) When they were having an online sale (50% off I believe) If your curious about any of them or would like a preview, let me know which ones and I can find a way to get them to you.

I'll take your deal too, i'll get these lessons done and I'll keep you informed on what i analyze from my playing. One thing I noticed today is that I dont have the best vibrato when i do larger bends. THe notes go out of tune a lot, not the best sound. So another lesson idea for the future!

Anyways, Back to it again. Hope all is well on you side, Keeping yourself nice a busy as usual i assume! Till next time

Howdy Tim!

I was sure you sort of missed that 6/8 feel biggrin.gif But, it's a good drill so keep at it - I'd be curious to see a recording with the new time signature and if you wish, after taking care of these lessons we could also focus on some more 6/8 time signature lead playing and working on your vibrato as well - out of what I can remember, your vibrato was not having any issues, but I must see an example of what you are having in mind, so that I may fully understand the context smile.gif

About the mixing vids - I did a quick search and I found this: http://therecordingrevolution.com/2011/07/...art-your-mixes/

... have I found the right one? smile.gif I also found this review which I am about to watch:

So, I think I have all the info at hand - maybe I'll get them too.

In the mean time, I am waiting for your new videos and impressions on your playing - keep this habit alive, as it's gonna help a lot wink.gif

Keep rocking, Tim!

Hi Cosmin,

Busy busy here as usual. Got my practice schedule done nearly everyday so far this week! I've got a vid for you today of the 6/8 time. I think I got it somewhat right. See what you think. Also, i've been playing with a bunch of new picks this week and its been surprising how much differene some picks make to your sound and feel! so this is played with one of my new favorites!

I was also working on the tool lesson, and i was playing along to the original and it seems ive been practicing it with the wrong feel. Are you able to compare my last video and the original to see if my hunch is right??

And yes, those are the video series i've been working with. I think they're great personally!

Gotta run, More to do before bedtime. Ill try to post some more stuff for you by the end of the week.

Tim

Hey Tim!

Just compared the Tool take with the original and it's there man smile.gif Nothing mistaken in terms of the formula and regarding the 6/8 picking - you did it great! I think that video can go in the REC zone for a great mark!

I would see the Tool one completed now and then what would come next on the list smile.gif It's about time we got rid of these two, so let me know if you agree wink.gif

Tell me man, how did the 6/8 feel compared with the straight 4/4? I think you did a great job, so I am inclining to think it felt more natural, right? smile.gif What sort of pick did you use?

Great!
I'll get it posted now. The 6/8 time makes the piece feel a lot smoother, it fits better to the backing track too!

I didnt understand what you meant witht the tool lesson. was that a go aheadwith it. that i've got it ?

As for whats next, i've got these three in my sights

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Rhythm-Funk/

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/hard-rock-licks/

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Chord-Melodies/

The funk lesson is coming a long well, just the fast lick in it thats causing me trouble. In the next one, there is an example of those bent vibrato notes i was talking about(right before the tapping lick). otherwise needs a little more work to smooth it out over all. The last one still needs a bit more work to get the feel right.

So, let me know about the tool lesson and then we can move on

hey Tim!

It's definitely a go ahead with, for the Tool lesson smile.gif Focus on timing, clean playing and be as precise as possible - that's the key to a great REC take. I know you already know this, but it's not a bad thing to mention it again biggrin.gif and again... and again wink.gif

About the new lessons, they seem like a challenging bunch - speed is not always the challenge as I am well aware that you know, but expression, so please take a bit of time to focus on widening your vibrato and making it more expressive. The Hard Rock Licks lesson is great for this and I would also recommend this one: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bend-E...chnique-Lesson/ - it's a bit slower paced, but more based on control wink.gif

What do you think?
