So I've been away for the past few weeks - went to Japan and came back with a few toys... one of which was a Two Notes Torpedo Live.
If you haven't heard of it, it's basically a load box and cab simulator. And it is SO good. Sure, you can cobble together a similar setup from various parts (load box into DI into IR or similar) , but I really like the idea of having it all-in-one. And I'd imagine that the tone suck from mashing various objects together could be fairly detrimental, compared with something that was purpose built and designed. Also, the Torpedo Live has a reactive load, which is supposed to more closely model the interaction between the amp and "speaker", compared to a resistive load, which is most often found in load boxes. The factory Two Notes cabs also have a special feature - most IRs are static, you can't change the mic placement or distance. But you can with these ones. Either there's some magic interpolation formula here or they miked up a shitload of different combinations. However... for someone like me, the ability to change mic positioning brings back the same issue that I have in real life - I don't know much at all about that sort of stuff. I'd much rather have a static IR that some pro has made and just be satisfied that it'll be 100x better than anything I could ever have done. That's where the Ownhammer IRs come in. It's a blend of SM57, Royer R121 and some room reflections, miked up on a Mesa 4x12" cab with V30s, and man, does it sound badass. Enough talk. Here's the first clip I recorded with it, for one of my friends who also owns a Mark V and wanted to see what it sounded like: This post has been edited by SixStringSamurai: Jun 24 2014, 12:31 PM -------------------- http://www.six-string-samurai.com - Gear reviews for the terminally GAS-afflicted.

Made a software comparison here sometime ago;
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=51945 Must say excellent combo, you're gonna have lots of fun For the mic. setting, just change them when needed for the mix or backing track. So amp setting and cab. (core tone) is static and use the mic. selection more like an eq. , the extra settings (mic. placement, rooms etc.) are just for the detail tweaks if ever needed. Its probably the most simple an effective way when tuning the sound for the mix or if you want duplicate guitar tracks in a mix for a bigger sound. This is also how things work generally in a studio, change/adding mic.s is must easier than cab.s |

Yeah for sure - thanks for checking out the pics I posted on Facebook while I was there!
It was a really crazy experience, and I'm just talking about the guitar shops!! Once I sort out my trip pictures I do intend to do a big long blog post about guitar shopping in Tokyo. I almost feel like I should have brought back more gear, the NZ dollar is quite strong against the Yen at the moment. -------------------- http://www.six-string-samurai.com - Gear reviews for the terminally GAS-afflicted.

Haha I think you're right. If I'm still working at my current job next year, NAMM and Japan will both be on the list to revisit (I work for an airline so we get great rates on flights)
I'd definitely love to go back to Tokyo, and just kinda hang out now that I know the lay of the land a little bit. And I got to meet Nuno and Extreme!!! Best trip ever. -------------------- http://www.six-string-samurai.com - Gear reviews for the terminally GAS-afflicted.
