Hi friend, how are you?

Thanks for sharing your music here. I find it very nice to hear. I like the overall feeling of those ideas. There is some darkness and melancholy behind those compositions, and the names reflects the same vibe. You have a very good sense of melody and harmony. These are 2 essentials for any composer. I think that the next step would be one of these:

- Recording drums and bass using a VSTi, like Ezdrummer and Trillian, in order to make the songs sound more completed. This will also make you want to work a bit more on guitar arrangements, define even more structure (add parts lacking and repetitions), and maybe add some other instruments (maybe some synth or orchestral?).

- Joining a drummer and a bass played and start working on the songs at a rehearsal room. This can be less "comfortable" at first, but you won't imagine how interesting can become a demo arranged by musicians that are good with their instruments. The possibilities will be much expanded.

In other words, you are doing a great job, now it's time to add the other instruments to make it sound as a complete song.

I'm good Gabriel, mainly recovered from the Carpial Tunnel issue, still find hard to do some stuff and losts strength on the left hand sad.gif

But I'm playing, so I'm happy smile.gif

- Glad you liked, I know there are some typos but I'm working on them hehehe

- I'm going to play with a drummer soon, probably end of the next week smile.gif, one of the things I'm finding hard is the times so drums will help on that, I got ezdrummer but didn't got into it very much yet smile.gif

- The synch and orchestral do you know anything I can use in terms of apps?

- For the bass, is there anything I could use playing guitar that would output as bass or the best would be to get a bass? On this I'm a little afraid of making bigger effort with left hand because of the carpal tunnel I'm playing with much more fear atm

Great to know that you are recovered! Be careful and take care of it. wink.gif

For recording bass, the best option is getting a bass. You won't get such a full sound with a plug in. However, as these are mainly demos, you could use a virtual bass by the way. Trillian is the best option I know. There are some midi interfaces or midi guitars that let you play on guitar and make it sound like any virtual VSTi that works with midi. Check out these products:

http://jamorigin.com/products/midi-guitar/
http://www.ausmidi.com/G2M.html

About synths and orquestral sound, there are lots of possibilities but these are the ones that I use:

http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/philharmonik/
http://www.massivesynth.com/

Also, let me know if you need help with EZdrummer. wink.gif

I think will be cheaper to get a bass, even if not an awesome one just to make some difference in here smile.gif

For ezdrummer that would be awesome, I though it would suggest based on the song (maybe asking to much, lol) so I'm not sure how to use it smile.gif

Yes - getting a cheap bass to play on your recordings would make a huge difference and should be a smoother solution. VST doesn't work really well emulating bass sound, it can deliver but you need to do a lot of tweaking of the midi tracks and VST instrument to achieve realism in the bass tracks.

Please let me know if you need any suggestions when it comes to basses smile.gif

Very good advice here smile.gif Getting a good cheap bass is a great idea wink.gif Also, grab something to use for drums for when you want to work on songs and your drummer isn't handy smile.gif toontrack easy drummer is where most folks start out for vst drums. It's very handy smile.gif

Hi Mataal. EZdrummer is not as tricky as it seems. The easier way to start using it is using the loops included with the package. This lets you choose the one that you like, copy it as many times as you want and then edit the groove and fills if it's necessary.

In order to help you, I would need to know which multitrack you are using to record your songs... Reaper? Cubase? Logic?

By the way, I don't own it but it seems that the new version of EZdrummer has a great "tap" function that makes things so easy, check out this video:

Please tell e exactly what problems you have with the EZdrummer, let me know if you can open it, if you can make it sound, and also if you know where the grooves are and if you know how to send them to the timeline.

Hey mate,

I have listened to your recordings and I too think that it's time to get to that one step in which you will orchestrate them by adding bass and drums. Now, you have two possibilities here:

- you will write the drums as these are your ideas and you can probably hear how the drums would sound in your head already - it's a GREAT orchestration exercise as well!
- you can have faith in the drummer and give him the tracks once you will establish a structure for each track - the more info you give him, the better the results smile.gif

Once you guys to this, you may want to record the bass. Another important aspect - tinker with the structure until you are happy - 100% happy smile.gif You have the freedom to do that and attain a form which is closest to what you have in mind. Keep us updated and definitely take a look over that EZ drummer video that Gabi posted!

@Gabriel: I use GarageBand
@Cosmin: Thanks Cosmin, going to play a little with drums in EZDrummer, even if working with drummer comes something different I can at least exercise a little with it smile.gif

That's a very good choice man! I am thinking about suggesting the following thing:

- pick up a song you like a lot - don't choose one which is too complex - the easier, the more fit for this particular drill
- analyze the drum parts in it and write down the drum parts structure
- use EZ drummer to replicate them as close to the original track as possible - first in terms of structure and formulas and then in terms of nuances which you can obtain with the aid of velocities.

If you take the time to do this, you will definitely get a good grasp on how to write drums and most important on how drums sustain a song.

Well, as everything related to making music, this needs some practice. Cosmin's idea is the best way to go in order to become better at drum programming. Most of my knowledge about composition and arranging is based on analyzing and transcribing my favorite songs, and even not my favorites but those that I find interesting.

Programming the drum track of some songs with midi will make you understand the way drums are arrangements, it will add ideas to your "drum grooves and fill library". You could even save your favorite grooves and fills to use them as starting points in your own compositions.

Besides Cosmin's steps, I would like also to add that it's a good plan to see how drums relates with other instruments of the song. See how it relates to bass, guitar and also with vocals. Check when it follows those instruments and when it not, and how...

Write down your ideas on a notepad, compare songs and take your own conclusions. wink.gif

Mouse all the way mate smile.gif You can do it with a MIDI keyboard that you plug in and assign various percussion elements to each key on the keyboard. I have a friend that writes drums this way - it looks like he plays piano biggrin.gif

I think Todd knows a bit more on the topic, but at a first glance, I would recommend a look here:

I have a midi controller (m-audio Oxygen25) but I honestly use much more my mouse and the copy, paste and duplicate options. I'm more comfortable and faster with it.

I write with my mouse using the key editor / piano roll section at Cubase:

Todd here smile.gif Are you using EZ DRUMMER version 1 or 2? Either way, it comes with TONS of "grooves" built in that you just drag and drop to the timeline in your daw smile.gif Here is a vid about doing this in EZ DRUMMER VERSION 1

HOWEVER!!! Since you are using GARAGE BAND, you can also use the "BUILT IN VIRTUAL DRUMMER!" which is one of the killer features of Garage Band that other Daws simply don't have. Using the virtual Drummer allow you to worry about guitar and the software to worry about drumming. It even puts in fills, intros, outros, etc. Here is a vid on using the built in drummer!

P.S. if you have any questions that I might be able to help with don't be shy about shooting me a personal message and linking me to the forum in question smile.gif

if you have ez drummer, i'd suggest deff taking a look at some tutorials on youtube and getting started with it. Like Todd said, it comes with grooves so you can use those as a thumbnail, then tweak it to your interest, and eventually getting used to creating from scratch. Also, i'd suggest routing each drum so you can eq each separate part to get the best sound you can. For guitars record 2 times, one left one right, (im not sure if you knew that or not just giving ideas). Bass is essential as well. I used to make tracks without bass and the second you get a bass you realize the importance. Last but not least make sure your guitars aren't taking up too much space so that you can give the bass some room to handle the low end. The guitars in reality aren't that heavy, it's getting the nice mix between bass and guitar that create that illusion of a "heavy guitar sound" also try to use as less distortion as you can. Hope this helps

Great input from Marco and Todd here wink.gif

I for one, like to build from scratch - why? Because using a template will most likely double the time needed to address the drum writing, since you have to tweak the template instead of writing something which is custom done for the music you are writing directly.

That's just me though, so my suggestion is to experiment and see which approach suits you better. Also, since Marco meentioned this:

Also, i'd suggest routing each drum so you can eq each separate part to get the best sound you can.

By this he meant that each drum element can be placed on a separate channel in the DAW and on that channel, you can apply an eq or effects smile.gif Let us know how your experiments are going and also, I remembered this very helpful video here, which will act as a good guide for you, when recording audio and video:

Ok, getting a little better with ezdrummer, nothing like spending some time with things smile.gif

Now, maybe you guys can help me out, I'm not getting the guitar sound that would like, either bias or guitarrig, for example this one https://soundcloud.com/mataal/regret/s-ekx4I , forget the typos, it's about the sound smile.gif , I see great sound in videos with both apps so my question is: is this sound because of my playing (if it is, any tips about it?) or can it be the interface that connects the guitar to computer (native instruments komplete audio 6)? When I try to put down the distortion as Marco said if sounds even worst sad.gif

Cheers
