When I was a kid, even though my family doesn't really any musicians, I have always got support to start playing. At the very beginning, I was very interested in learning how to play the piano. All I was interested was to play rock n roll / oldies music and this is what I would imagine me playing on the piano :

After a long time of playing small kid keyboards I borrowed from a friend, my parents got me nice 5-octaves "arranger" keyboards which I spent hours playing smile.gif
Later on, quite later I have shown interest in playing the guitar - this was mainly in order to be able to enter a local school band.

Now to cut the long story short, I must say that looking back now I was very lucky to receive support from my parents when it comes to music. Of course, there were tons of moments where I would play (loud) and I would get : "turn that down immediately and similar comments" which I would literally see as "sabotaging my musical career hahahah smile.gif" . I'm so glad now that I picked up music as a kid and stayed with it as it makes me really happy and it is what I like to do. Of course, I can't blame any parents in not having a belief in music as a choice for their kids but it must be extremely hard for those to stick to playing in such non supporting environment? I made it a bit easier for my parents as my school grades didn't suffer much so they didn't have that "excuse" for limiting me.

How are your experiences with parents and the choice of playing music as a hobby or way of life? smile.gif

hi

i had the choice when i was child to learn music with an excellent musician: my father.
it started to learn theory at 7yo , start the accordion (chromatique) at 12yo (yes 5 years of theory with a hard professor from the paris's conservatory) at 16yo he was european champion at accordion in semi pro category, he win all the prices since he had 24yo.

he started to play jazz organ, he was a well know hamond specialist in france...

but his live rules wasn't the right one, girls, alcohol etc... he try to teach me but i wasn't aware (at 12yo).

he died 20y ago, and now, i learn to play guitar since 2 years and i regret to do not have catch the opportunitie to start learning music soon.

now i'm 42yo...not too late,but i need to work a lot.

my mother said -"you play moan'in in the same way as your father", in the same way but not like him, not now, later surely

Laurent

Unfortunately my experience was more along the lines of "turn that down!" , "that's not music that's noise." And "can't you play anything else?" sad.gif

But I took all the negative energy and turned it into an "Oh yeah? I'll prove you all wrong." attitude.

Watching a lot of guitarists online and listening to their music helped keep me motivated - especially John 5. I didn't start to play because of him but I sure kept practicing after watching him rip up some bluegrass/metal tunes on his tele tongue.gif

My parents were very supportive thankfully smile.gif I'd been begging for a real guitar since I was about 5 or 6 years old. They finally got my uncle to loan me one when I was about 12 smile.gif Then about 14 I got my first real electric smile.gif They kept saying "you'll forget about this next year" I just wouldn't let it go smile.gif "Buy me a guitar!" smile.gif hehehe.

@Chris:

my father was very un-open to metal, all his life he said to me
-"take a cat, plug it onto a 220v socket and you have AXL roses at home......." or -"they must use drugs", unfortunatly for him, he doesn't knew that mark knopfler was addicted too......

parents are sometime crappy, i have two children, one at 13yo, and one at 3 and half yo.

the older try guitar last years, i bought him a squier fat strat to start, after on month of work, he give up because it's too hard...

now he wanna try drums, why not......

my youngest, but not the coolest one, a real metal addict, he cannot put his ass in my car without ask me to put Velvet revolver with a high volume !! and he sing on since his 2yo, before he was mov'in his head.... lovely wink.gif

this is my monster playin a great solo !

Great stories guys! smile.gif

Love this one: "take a cat, plug it onto a 220v socket and you have AXL roses at home......." laugh.gif ...because its true smile.gif

First music that hooked me at a very early age were The Beatles.

I played a record just for fun, still remember the exact song:

...and it was the eureka moment for me and that was the moment which defined what kind of music I listen to and what I'd like to learn to play smile.gif

@fzalfa - great to hear your kids are interested in learning to play an instrument. I think it is important to be able to experiment with different instruments at the early age as that is the only way for a kid to find the one he really likes and finds fitting.
