Ok this is my usual rubbish but I had a bit of fun with it.
I HAVE TO APOLOGISE IN ADVANCE. I'm not giving you the V sign at the beginning, It was the second take and I kept the video running so that is just for me to find it quickly when doing the edit. I got mixed up and did it after I started the backing, Also at the end, I'm not flying the bird to you all, it's just how it had to end. Sorry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnvBdqpBW10 This post has been edited by Phil66: Aug 22 2016, 09:21 PM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. I really like the "Vibe" of this one. Either one would have gotten you badged up for sure. This one feels waaaay different than the other one IMHO. It's great that you can speak in many musical voices as it were. This one seems more focused on bending and vibrato which is great as it goes well with the subdued backing. I hear you bending the notes up to pitch by ear which is not easy to pull off. Some folks struggle with it their entire lives. Being able to hear the note that you want in your head, is very helpful. Then you just have to match the note you are playing to the one in your head during a bend Sounds crazy to some folks, but it's just because they have not quite hit it yet. They will Being able to hear one or two bars ahead of the solo is important as well. To know what's coming so that you have time to react to it without getting behind or lagging. Well done on every aspect of yoru playing here. Nice
Todd Couldn't resist another take. No need to critique this one though, just for giggles: Phil!!! This is MUCH improved. I liked it I dug the part where you got bold and started using the left hand single hammer note as well. That can be stressful if you hid the wrong note. But you nailed it!! Also, I dig the blues bits. They way you let them repeat against the changing backing created a sense of tension that you later resolved by flowing toward the Root. Nicely done there:) Your soloing is getting better each time and that's the entire point. The only way to get any better at any of this is to put yourself out there and simply go for it. You will learn something valuable every single time P.S. What do you think you came away with this time after developing the solo? Were there any lessons learned that you will carry with you to the next solo? P.S. Loved it and you have just ........ !!!!!LEVELD UP!!!!!! *please do let me know if my records on your rank are off! Ok this is my usual rubbish but I had a bit of fun with it.

Thanks Todd,
I learnt that my bends need work, and i also learnt not to be afraid of trying something new, I did my first improvised right handed tap and pull off following a pinched harmonic and i think it worked and was pretty cool. It's very very rare for me to say anything like that about myself. Improvising is hard, people that don't play an instrument think it's easy because " you just play what you want " Well that's what makes it hard because you're trying to make it up as you go along. I've kept your advice of trying to resolve on the root and I try to do that. Cheers buddy. -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. I took a little inspiration from Cael's take because it had such a cool vibe to it although Im not quite as good at the improv.
I wish I had better phrasing in my toolkit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87TSRzWjhTg -------------------- You say 'minor pentatonic ' like it's a bad thing |

Pehaps the most impressive part is not just that you played this entirely "fingerstyle" but also that you did it within about an HOUR of me posting the CHALLENGE!! Good Lord Man!!! That's the quickest I think I"ve ever seen and then on top of it, you play fingerstyle for the entire solo. I must tip my had to before even getting to the critique. Impressive.
Onward!!! This backing is not the easiest thing to solo over as there is no real guitar part to play off of. Despite that, you manage to create great amounts of tension and very fulfilling release points. I'm sure others listening can feel the tension build and then let go. this is the essence of soloing and impossible to actually teach. I can tell you about it, but you have to actually interpret it musically. That's what you did here and did it quite well I must say. I think the time is at hand for and E.P. release. You have grown as a player to the point where it seems time to share your work if you are up for it. Forgive me if you already have one out I notice that the bandcamp link is not taken. https://bandcamp.com/signup?new_domain=benjamin-storm I really like how you create a "vibe" in this solo and it stands on it's own musically. This could work as it's own piece with just a pinch more focus on the melody through line which is the most important bit of any musical piece imho. Your "bridge" starts around 27 seconds and then your "chorus bit" starts just after. It works quite well. Here's something played without a pick for once: |

Your phrasing toolkit is growing by the day Mr Bleez! Look back at your first Challenge solos and compare them to this one. You'll see what I mean. I've always maintained that the best way to get good at playing solos, is to play lots of solos. Learning other peoples solos is fun and a great way to learn how other folks put things together, but playing your own bits against a backing is like painting a canvas that's only half finished and you are there to complete it. Even non musicians can tell if a guitar solo is "good" or not, and they are responding to the emotion conveyed by the soloist which happens in context of what is being played against/over. It's this contrast that sets up the emotional resonance with the listener. Even if they don't know anything about guitar, or theory, etc. They can tell if they "liked it" or "felt it".
You are way more than good enough IMHO to share your solo work with friends and family and not have them wish you didn't. I shared far too early in my progress and my relatives had to endure some really terrible work from me. However, seeing your loved ones place with grace and verve produces a sense of pride in them. If you have not been sharing your playing, I'd say it's a good time to start Congrats. I took a little inspiration from Cael's take because it had such a cool vibe to it although Im not quite as good at the improv. I wish I had better phrasing in my toolkit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87TSRzWjhTg Keep it up!! You have been making killer progress Todd wow !!! thanks for listening , and thankx for the teaching !!!
