First off, SUPER CONGRATS on giving a go at this one. It's not an easy backing and I wanted to push you guys a bit, just to make you better smile.gif You are the first one to take this on and I realy dig what you did with it smile.gif The crazy multi picking is really killer and makes for a very cool interaction with the backing. Also, your endurance has grown by leaps and bounds as you keep it up pretty much the entire time!!! Nice smile.gif In short, you just LEVELED UP!!!!!

NICE!! Now that is quick response!!! Not only did he record a challenge take, he also did a MISSION in the same day. The same day that the challenge was released I might add. BEN YOU ARE A MACHINE!!!!!! That's what I call MOMENTUM. Keep it up!!!

On to the solo smile.gif Very cool. I like how it starts off heading towards a blues/rock thing but then about one minute in, goes crazy prog and starts adding sweeps and hyper tapping smile.gif Quite a combo indeed. The entire thing works as a composition and is quite the display of articulation and technique, not to mention vibe/feel. In short, well done and welcome to X7!!

Ok this is my usual rubbish but I had a bit of fun with it.
I HAVE TO APOLOGISE IN ADVANCE. I'm not giving you the V sign at the beginning, It was the second take and I kept the video running so that is just for me to find it quickly when doing the edit. I got mixed up and did it after I started the backing, unsure.gif Also at the end, I'm not flying the bird to you all, it's just how it had to end. Sorry.

I really like the "Vibe" of this one. Either one would have gotten you badged up for sure. This one feels waaaay different than the other one IMHO. It's great that you can speak in many musical voices as it were. This one seems more focused on bending and vibrato which is great as it goes well with the subdued backing. I hear you bending the notes up to pitch by ear which is not easy to pull off. Some folks struggle with it their entire lives. Being able to hear the note that you want in your head, is very helpful. Then you just have to match the note you are playing to the one in your head during a bend smile.gif Sounds crazy to some folks, but it's just because they have not quite hit it yet. They will smile.gif Being able to hear one or two bars ahead of the solo is important as well. To know what's coming so that you have time to react to it without getting behind or lagging. Well done on every aspect of yoru playing here. Nice smile.gif

Phil!!! This is MUCH improved. I liked it smile.gif I dug the part where you got bold and started using the left hand single hammer note as well. That can be stressful if you hid the wrong note. But you nailed it!! Also, I dig the blues bits. They way you let them repeat against the changing backing created a sense of tension that you later resolved by flowing toward the Root. Nicely done there:)

Your soloing is getting better each time and that's the entire point. The only way to get any better at any of this is to put yourself out there and simply go for it. You will learn something valuable every single time smile.gif P.S. What do you think you came away with this time after developing the solo? Were there any lessons learned that you will carry with you to the next solo?

P.S. Loved it and you have just ........

!!!!!LEVELD UP!!!!!!

*please do let me know if my records on your rank are off!

Thanks Todd,
I learnt that my bends need work, and i also learnt not to be afraid of trying something new, I did my first improvised right handed tap and pull off following a pinched harmonic and i think it worked and was pretty cool. It's very very rare for me to say anything like that about myself. Improvising is hard, people that don't play an instrument think it's easy because " you just play what you want " Well that's what makes it hard because you're trying to make it up as you go along. I've kept your advice of trying to resolve on the root and I try to do that.
Cheers buddy.

It's great to see you trying new things and seeing / hearing you play with more confidence. II can hear a real difference from your X1 take, which I liked as well smile.gif Improve can be a very real challenge. Especially at first. You are out there on a limb with no net making it up as you go and trying to pull everything you can remember in to your playing while trying to match it to the backing and make it sound good. The good news is that you are getting better each and every time I hear you take a crack at one of these. It's the repetition that will serve you best IMHO smile.gif Keep it up and you'll get to that magical spot where creating improv solos is something that just happens, almost like a reflex, and turns in to something fun and enjoyable. I must say, when I finally noticed that I wasntt thinking and was just playing whatever happened to come out, I was nearly overwhelmed by it. It's a wonderful thing. At that point, you focus more on conveying the emotion that you are feeling as a result of listening to the track. It becomes an expressive thing which turns in to pure fun smile.gif It's getting to that spot that takes the effort and you are well on your way smile.gif

Pehaps the most impressive part is not just that you played this entirely "fingerstyle" but also that you did it within about an HOUR of me posting the CHALLENGE!! Good Lord Man!!! That's the quickest I think I"ve ever seen and then on top of it, you play fingerstyle for the entire solo. I must tip my had to before even getting to the critique. Impressive.

Onward!!! This backing is not the easiest thing to solo over as there is no real guitar part to play off of. Despite that, you manage to create great amounts of tension and very fulfilling release points. I'm sure others listening can feel the tension build and then let go. this is the essence of soloing and impossible to actually teach. I can tell you about it, but you have to actually interpret it musically. That's what you did here and did it quite well I must say. I think the time is at hand for and E.P. release. You have grown as a player to the point where it seems time to share your work if you are up for it. Forgive me if you already have one out smile.gif I notice that the bandcamp link is not taken.

https://bandcamp.com/signup?new_domain=benjamin-storm

I really like how you create a "vibe" in this solo and it stands on it's own musically. This could work as it's own piece with just a pinch more focus on the melody through line which is the most important bit of any musical piece imho. Your "bridge" starts around 27 seconds and then your "chorus bit" starts just after. It works quite well.

WOW!!! Dude, your sense of melody and harmony has improved by leaps and bounds. You are really creating "solos" now. Not just connecting scales and licks, you are actually responding musically to the backing. You have embraced building tension and finding release as well which is an awesome thing. I must say It's so gratifying to see you guys getting this much better at your solo work. This is, for me, the entire point of my teaching. To get you guys to a place where you can express yourselves musically. I'm glad to say you guys are there smile.gif It only gets better from here!!

I liked everything you played here. Nothing is overplayed, everything is in it's place and feels right. Nothing feels forced or out of place which is how a solo feels best IMHO smile.gif I see you fnding the roots to create release after building tension so huge kudos there. I think you are also starting to "feel" the backing and hear the notes that go next in your head. I can actually hear them to and many of them are exactly the same. Nice smile.gif

Your phrasing toolkit is growing by the day Mr Bleez! Look back at your first Challenge solos and compare them to this one. You'll see what I mean. I've always maintained that the best way to get good at playing solos, is to play lots of solos. Learning other peoples solos is fun and a great way to learn how other folks put things together, but playing your own bits against a backing is like painting a canvas that's only half finished and you are there to complete it. Even non musicians can tell if a guitar solo is "good" or not, and they are responding to the emotion conveyed by the soloist which happens in context of what is being played against/over. It's this contrast that sets up the emotional resonance with the listener. Even if they don't know anything about guitar, or theory, etc. They can tell if they "liked it" or "felt it".

You are way more than good enough IMHO to share your solo work with friends and family and not have them wish you didn't. I shared far too early in my progress and my relatives had to endure some really terrible work from me. However, seeing your loved ones place with grace and verve produces a sense of pride in them. If you have not been sharing your playing, I'd say it's a good time to start smile.gif Congrats.
