LOL! the vic20 was my first ever computer! Im surprised they are still around, I wish Id kept it biggrin.gif I thought it was the coolest thing ever!
I remember learning basic on it.... not visual basic but old school original Basic.
I think I had a c64 after the vic20, cant remember totally but I do remember getting an Acorn Electron smile.gif
I actually wanted a BBC Micro but they were too expensive. If the BBC Micro computer was like a Fender then the Electron was like a classic vibe squier cool.gif

We had an Acorn Electron too!!! I have to admit that I didn't spend a lot of time on it I was too busy pretending to be a Rock Star!! wink.gif
Lots of my friends started on ZX 81's and moved on to Spectrums when they came out.
Later on my younger Brother bought himself an Amiga which we did make some Music on but it wasn't very good, the Music not the Computer!!

HA! the electrons were great. They had the clickiest sounding keys of all the computers at that time, which for some reason was a big deal to me smile.gif
I spent a lot of time playing chuckie egg on it.

Interesting topic. I am not really into old computers but what makes this interesting to me is that I happen to have a Commodore 64 with some other accessories that I am looking to sell but have no idea what it may be worth or what to ask for it so, I could use some input on the matter if one of you old school computer guru's wants share some insight. smile.gif

Hi rich

What kind of accessories ?

a C64 do not worth a lot because they sold 25.000.000 of them....

but a pretty nice one, working and with the packing box can be sold 200 Usd i think.

Cheers

Laurent

Thanks, Laurent. I figured it wasn't really worth much. I'll have to dig it out of the conex I have it stored in to see what all I have with it but I think there may be a printer and maybe another thing or two. I think there may be some games that go with it as well.

In Graduate school we had a full onyx rack system that was specd out. At the time, it was one of the fastest machines money could buy and it didn't come cheap. I think it was 250k. We were using it to scan 35 mm film in for fx processing using a system by kodak called CINEON. It was great fun smile.gif

to this day I still want a thinking machine, ( they used to be crazy pricey)

and a Cray 2 with the waterfall cooling system smile.gif Someday.

Hi Todd

i still have a silicon graphics ONYX, not the rack one (predator chassis) but the deskside one, maxedout specs (quad R10000 cpu, 2Gb of memory and full spec Infinite Reality gfx pipe )

these are great computers !!!!!!

i know the word CINEON, you can still use this gfx format for exchange, but i never saw any software, becasue it's really hard to find, like Barco, ALias, Wavefront and Avid products....

Cheers

Laurent

NICE!! That computer was called 'THE TERMINATOR" by the folks @ SGI. It was as badass as badass got during it's time. It's like owning a classic guitar IMHO. A beautiful work of technology and Art combined. Congratulations on your aquisition!

Yes, the CINEON format became a standard smile.gif Even though the CINEON software is only used @ CINESITE who work on BIG movies with BIG budgets.

http://www.cinesite.com/

The system is just too expensive for shops unless they work on big summer movies. But the file format lives everywhere smile.gif It's considered the Gold Standard of file format for modern digital fx work on feature films and creating "Digital Intermediates". The bit depth and resolution of the file format is awesome. Sadly each file/frame is HUGE!! smile.gif

I used the system in graduate school for some fx on films and it was great fun smile.gif

This is what the film scanner looked like. It scanned to an Indigo SGI then went to the TERMINATOR for work smile.gif

Those pixar machines were really amazing for the time smile.gif The produced some of Pixars earliest animations using their own code base as I understand.

We had INTERGRAPH workstations @ Turner Broadcasting while I was working there. At the time, they were crazy fast and nothing else but the SGI's could keep up with them smile.gif

Not to mention there was an entire row of QUANTEL Suites at Turner Studios. They eventually all got replaced by FIRE and FLAME systems running on SGI, then those all got replaced by quad core Macs! smile.gif
