I think I mentioned phill about this guy while we were listening his sound samples. It's worth a check, I'm leaving comments to you guys on this one

I was dead wrong on his tone. It' evidently vastly complex on this album. To wit....

The conglomeration of equipment used on the album could choke an elephant.

AMPS:

a. Seven different Marshall 100 watt heads were used throughout the recordings, all moded by Jose Arrendondo. They were run differently

at different times for a desired effect. Sometimes I went out of the

line level to the Bradshaw Rack, and sometimes it was just directly out of the head into the cabs. On the tune "Liberty," a specially made

direct box was constructed for me by Steve Firlotte. It utilizes an old transformer I had laying around. It's extremely clean and useful.

e. Direct into Massenburg mic pre's

f. Direct into API pre amp

c. Guild 12- and 6-String acoustics. On the tune "Liberty," A Guild Acoustic with direct mic'ing was used

d. Choral Sitar

e. B.c. Rich Double Neck

f. Tom Anderson custom guitar

g. Charvel Green Meanie

FOOT PEDALS:

Cry Baby Wah Wah, MXR Distortion, Boss Super Overdrive, MXR Phase 90, MXR Phase 100, MXR Flanger, Maestro Phase Shifter, Mution Bi Phase, some others I can't remember.

BOB BRADSHAW RACK:

On occasion I went through my rack. If I used a piece of gear either

coming into the console to be recorded, or in the mix, it was one of these many pieces:

Rack - 2 Eventide H-3000 Harmonizers 2 Yamaha 1500 delays

1 T.c. Electronics Signal Processor 2290 1 Drawmer Dual Gate

STRINGS:

The only ones I'm sure of are for the 7-String. Normal D'Addario 0] Gibson. Gauge: 42-10 with a 53 on the bottom 7th string.

CABINETS (SPEAKERS):

2 - 4 by 12" cabinets housing 30 watt celestians.

MICS:

Senhouser 421 and Sure 57s, close mic'd on amps, 414 AKG on the

acoustic guitar.

2. BALLERINA 12/24 RAP

This piece is performed with the use of the Eventide H-3000( harmonizer. A stereo harmonizing delay program is set. There are

2 echos, the first being 180 ms (one sixteenth note) and sounding a major 6th higher. The second delay is set to 360 ms (one eighth note)

and is sounding a perfect 4th higher than the original. The two

delayed harmonized signals are panned left and right respectively.

The part is played in an 8th note fashion to the delays. The actual noted part is the performance part of the original 8th (The dry guitar) -----

EDIT: wow eh? Delayed/harmonized two different ways and panned left and right. Sure!! why the heck not!!

haha that guy is crazy! I have the original score & tab book, so I'm familiar with all the equipment used and the photos shared there.

On a side note, I'm happy to say that I'll be seeing Steve live the next week, and he'll be playing this album complete. Can't wait!

He may not be that crazy after all. I dug in to it and the guy who runs the I HEART GUITAR blog interviewed VAI for the anniversary of the album in question. Here is a link to thread with wads of info and the interview.

As for the guys tone quest, trying to match tone by studio level isn't something I've seen so often. On his latest post he compares a kemper sound clip and then the addition of studio grade compressors in the chain. I personally would get that obsessed but its interesting to observe

If this exact tone is what this guy is REALLY into, he's at least going all in, which is kind of cool. I'll save my money, but it's fun to watch someone else do it. Curious if he can nail it.

I'm with yoncopin Great fun to watch, but would not blow all that for just one tone. I would probably buy a kemper first and find a similar tone in the kemper tone cloud. I'm guessing there are several that are at least somewhat decent

The only difference as far as I read is he will be using impulses as his house (like many of us) isn't suited to crack Marshall's.

After advancing the guitar gear, sure not this level but its not a bad move to invest on recording gear. I personally have some way to go before such investment but do want an analog channel strip (probably api) someday.

Very true imho The advancing tech in plugins and hardware means that we can have a crazy amount of great sounding gear that's virtual. I'm glad there are still folks out there spending wild cash and making old signal chains come alive again by connecting vintage gear. I'm even happier that these folks often make profiles of all this gear. So that other folks can have the same tone without investing a mortgage in gear.

This guy does great vids and collects old gear like Zakk Wyldes old signal chain. Then he makes kemper profiles out of it
Back when Zakk was babyfaced, and Racks were like big as a mini or full size fridge.

P.S. Ola Englund started a bit of a row on his youtube channel with a "Guess the amp" vid and folks said the usual suspects of course, and it was a trick question. Answer? GUITAR RIG 5.
