I've found this article about Albums Every Kid Should Hear Before They Turn 13, and I would like to know your opinion... what albums do you think every kid should hear?

Regardless of their age, everyone should own, hear and 'know' those records. Good list!

I thought you were going to chime in with some more esoteric suggestions . The list seems kind of obvious to me. Almost all of those albums were extremely popular. I think the list would be more interesting if it reached a little deeper, like Montrose and Mudhoney and Peter Gabriel and Depeche Mode and Massive Attack and Mogwai to highlight originators of musical waves instead of popularizers.

But I suppose it depends on the purpose of the list. If you want the 13 year old to hear albums that marked milestones of their parents' lives then that's a different list of albums than a list of albums that have shaped popular music in the past 50 years.

Esoteric is for later. Further study lets say.
The stuff on that list is popular/famous for a reason. I may not personally be into some of it but it all had an impact on what came after it.

And yeah, obvious to 'us' maybe. But a teenager or even a 20 year old in 2017 probably has never heard of half those bands/artists/records. Hell, their parents probably haven't either. It's a good "gateway drug" list.

It's funny (or maybe sad) but at this point I can barely compile lists anymore. It's all just this giant continuum.

yes! I was shocked the day that I played for a private 11 years old student riffs like "Enter Sandman" and "Smells like teen spirits" and he didn't know them. However, he loved the "Back in Black" thanks to "School of Rock" movie.






We might be tired from some albums, but I wish I could hear some of those albums for the first time in my life without any background. There are many reasons why some of those albums are that big and unfortunately, I don't think that this music will reach young kids easily in the future.

A couple more I think could be on that list would be Rush 2112 and Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon. A Van Halen album might be a good addition, as well as just about anything from Stevie Wonder.
Come to think of it, maybe an album from The Eagles and Journey would be a good idea. Maybe the list should be 100 strong or more.

+ 1 to Rush, Pink Floyd, and Van Halen. I've never been too much into The Eagles and Journey. I think that they never get that big at my country as in other parts of the world.

I like the original list (from the buzzfeed article) because if said 13 year old is into music enough to listen to all those then it will lead them to many of the others mentioned in this thread. For example; if they take a liking to 'No doubt' that's going to eventually get them to Bob Marley. If they dig 'Green Day' then the Ramones, NY Dolls and the MC5 are sure to follow.

Yeah some prog music would be good too. You could add the band Yes to the list as well.
Robert Johnson should probably be on the list too for an introduction to the blues.

Thanks Gabriel. I think some other genres could be included as well such as some Classical music, R&B, Funk and Jazz. Beethoven etc. Tower of Power, Coltrane etc, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Micheal Jackson. I could go on and on. The list should be much larger than 30 something in my view.

Good list (although I haven't heard some of them myself!), but no list is complete in my book without a bit of Springsteen & The Cure.

If you overwhelm folks, especially kids (remember, this list is for 13 year olds now), they won't get to any of it.
That list is just bait. If a teenager can dive into that list and dig a lot of it - they'll discover all the rest on their own. And along the way, develop their own individual as well as informed taste.

People ask me all the time, "I kinda like jazz, what should I get?". I used to have a list of probably 150 artists and associated albums (which is minuscule by the way) that spanned many decades and genres of jazz. I've now paired it down to one artist.
Art Blakey (And The Jazz Messengers). Get any 'Messengers' album. If you like it, look at the credits and buy a record done by one of the other players. Wash, rinse, repeat. If you don't like that 1st Blakey album, stop. You won't like jazz.

Be that as it may. there are what? 3 punk albums on the list? 2 Grunge era albums? And should a 13 year old really be listening to gangsta rap? There are 2 of those. But not 1 Jazz album, no traditional blues although the Zep album touches on it. No Soul music or Funk, Hard Rock or any Rock and Roll really(Although the Beatles touches on it) or Metal, and no Classical music either. No, the list is incomplete in my opinion. So you could actually get rid of a few of the albums on the list and substitute a different genre. Realistically the list could probably be closer to 50 but even a few substitutions could make it more rounded if one is worried about overwhelming.

Edit: Somehow I missed the MJ album so that is covered I guess and the Otis Redding album touches on the Soul/R and B.
