Notice petrucci doing a standing version of classical position when it comes time to play the hard bits? Good reason for that smile.gif

Todd

QUOTE (Caelumamittendum @ Jan 1 2018, 11:26 AM) *
Absolutely. Another "Petrucci tip" of course when standing up is raising the guitar to have it higher up, which allows better fret access as well:

Of course some people doesn't think it looks cool, and would rather do the James Hetfield:

In my opinion it's playability over looks, but then again I've never minded looking like a bit of a "dork" smile.gif

Yep, as stated in my previous post before that one, he actually sometimes uses a "box" on stage to plant his left foot on to stand in the classical position smile.gif

Yup. He's doing the classical position using a very large foot stool so he can still stand up while doing it. When it comes to plaing technical passages, this position is simply physically superior IMHO due to the physical arrangement of the human body. There is a good reason classical players use this position. It promotes reach, access, and playability. It's sometimes tough when you learned everything sitting down side saddle and have to relearn everything when you stand up to play a gig, so keeping your guitar roughly in the same spot sitting or standing is a beneficial imho. If you only ever practice standing up, then drop it to your knees if you like. But most of us do spend a lot of time sitting down when practicing smile.gif

My guitar tends to be so high up it doesn't matter if I sit or stand biggrin.gif

It's probably me that's wrong laugh.gif I always thought side saddle was with your guitar on the same side leg as your picking hand,
I guess it's because Todd said side sale is awkward because your arm is at an unnatural angle, I took it to be the picking arm because it sticks out funny from the shoulder.

I'm not even sure who's wrong or right, just trying to figure out what's meant by what smile.gif

I usually just call it "classical position" and..."bad position". No, seriously, I can't even remember what the non-classical is called now.

Well classical players usually sit with guitar like I do, so I assumed side saddle was with guitar on right leg for right handed pickers.

Classical position is just the guitar in between your legs, and side saddle is the guitar on your right leg smile.gif Most folks start side saddle. Many folks transition to classical later on but not all. But yeah, classical allows more natural position for the hand imho.

I think we confused each other a bit in this thread, but hopefully it has been cleared up and we're all talking the same language now smile.gif

I actually started out side saddle as many players do, but realized it was causing pain in my arm during long stretches. I switched to classical position and the pain went away smile.gif

Nicely done! This lick requires "travel" down the neck which is great practice or running really long scales over many frets. I notice that you are alternating between picking and legato (left hand pull offs) which is a great way to play this lick in order to take advantage of the natural motion of the hand during the descent. You have a very good handle on this lick and you are ready for the rest of them!!! In other words you just...

LEVELED UP!!!!!

Great Sarge! Thanks! Yes legato is very important and it might be a shortcut to shredding, but of course a good shredder must be agood alternate picker as well!

I think the mic cam is very sensitive to the guitar being in contact with the desk laugh.gif
Please watch and advise anyway, I'll do a beter recording next time.

Nice! And yet another one down!!! You've got the idea. It's about pulling off with the fingers so that you don't need a pick for most of the lick. Ideally, as you played here, one can pick as little as one likes and have enough finger power to make the strings work as desired.

This gets tough with the pinky in particular. Good news is that you had no trouble making the PINKY do it's job! Well done there. You've worked up enough finger power to be able to pull off this lick and probably any lick you want using finger power alone. As you increase finger power, try to palm mute while doing hammer/pulls without a pick. It's part of what makes Rick Grahams style/Tone so spiff. Muted pull offs.

You got this for sure. Setting em up and knocking em down! You are ready for the next challenge my friend!
and you just

LEVELED UP!!!!!
