QUICK LICKS #12 (Pedal Point Licks)

INTRO:

This time we are going to do another chunk from my recent collaboration with our own CAEL (Ben) Called Miami Viceroy. Using a backing that may already be familiar to you if you have searched youtube for backing tracks. It's got a very retro 80's Vibe with heavy synth and it's wads of fun to Solo over. It's in the key of E Minor. We are going to use a Classical Guitar Technique called "Pedal Point". All this really means is that we have one note that we keep coming back to and after playing that note, we play a note from the appropriate scale, in this case E Minor smile.gif

Here is the tablature. You can pick this any way that you like. Try to pick each note and palm mute all the strings including the one we are working on in order to give the lick a percussive vibe. You can play this lick very slowly with the the backing and it will still sound cool. You don't have to shred it. Just play at any pace that is comfy. Speed will come as a byproduct of precision.

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS
This is a variation on another one of my fave licks. It also works as a drill, as a lick for a solo, as a way to work on your picking, precision, hand synch, etc. It works on a lot of things that will make you a better player. smile.gif

*Here is the Backing Track for you to download

BTW:
This is just a starting point, feel free to add your own flourish during your vid. Add any techniques you lick on top of this to make it your own !

GIVE EM HELL!

Well Done! You've got a really got a good handle on this. Keep working with it and you will gain more and more precision and thus more speed. Your fingers know where to go so keep at this and add i to your warm up routine. Per usual also try it in a solo asap so that you burn it in to your head as one of your back of tricks. Well done! In other words you just.

LEVELED UP!!!

NICE! Not only did you krush the lick, you composed a min sonata on top as a bonus. Very well done there. This is what I love to see, taking the lick and making it your own thing. Each one of these is just a jumping off point to give you ideas on what what you can play that might go wth it. Technique is spot on, and very good ear in putting the rest of the piece together. Not a note out of place. Score!! In other words you just...

KRUSHED IT! Good finger articulation, hand synch, no string noice. Just BAM killed it. Made it look too easy actually. I think I'm going to have to turn up the wick a bit for you guy!!! You got this down pat. Try to add it to your warm up and use it on every string going down see if you can switch strings in less than a beat do make it sound smooth. Also, per usual, use it in a solo! Great solo lick smile.gif In other words you just ..

LEVELED UP!

NICE!! Clean, precise, brisk and aggressive!!! You really have a good handle on this one. I can hear the pick attack on each strike which is what I like smile.gif Very solid strikes and very tight hand synch, also very goog muting and preventing string noise. In a lick like this, if you miss a single note it all falls apart. Try this one, like the others on every string. It feels a bit different each string you try it on. Also per usual, try it in a solo!

In other words you KRUSHED it and ....

LEVELED UP!!!!

SPIFF!!! This lick requires very precise timing as there is no gap at all to speak of. Each strike/fret has to be spot on. Also, this lick requires that you stick the landing with the pinky every single time and it happens over and over. If you miss one note in this type of lick, it sticks out like a sore thumb. The good news is that you didn't miss a single note. This too is a great lick to work up some serious speed on. Keep this one handy!

In other words you just...

LEVELED UP!!!!!!!!

NICE!!!! killed it!!! Very spiff. You can play this type of thing all day at any speed and not show any signs of fatigue. It shows a lot of time spend in the woodshed working up your endurance!! This is a very good thing. It means your arms won't wear out half way through a recording session or gig. Having enough endurance to be able to play through a long stint recording a song, or a long night at a gig is key. Without that endurance, you will find things getting very hard very quick in the studio and live. Keep it up!! In other words you just..

You've got the ascending bit perfect! You left out the descending bit though. Id love to see you play the entire lick! Looks like you have worked up some brisk speed on it as well! It's a great lick!

NAILED IT!!! That's what I was looking for smile.gif This is a great solo lick. The way it's written here is in E Minor. It's also a great picking drill. Try it at the same frets on every string for working on your picking. Being able to play this requires several skills to be in place and you've got them! Well played!
You just..
