QUICK LICKS #13 (Back and Forth - Advanced)

INTRO:
This time we are going to work on a drill that makes use of what is often the weakest link in the chain, the PINKY! Make SURE to use your pinky when playing this lick. Using your first three fingers won't get you a pass on this one. This lick is done 3 strings at a time. Once you understand how it works, you'll be able to do it all the way down all six strings. The hard part is doing it in reverse and ascending back up all six strings. This is a challenging, finger twisting lick, but it's worth learning. Your fingers will thank you


Here is the tablature. You can pick this any way that you like. Try to pick each note and palm mute all the strings including the one we are working on in order to give the lick a percussive vibe. You can play this lick very slowly. You don't have to shred it. Just play at any pace that is comfy. Speed will come as a byproduct of precision. The more practice you get at this, the more impressive it will sound. The good news is that it's the same exact shape on every string because it's a drill not a scale. So this won't work in a solo per se. However, once you learn the pattern, you can use it on any scale. Lets start with the first three strings of the drill. Once you play starting from the high E, just repeat the pattern one string down and so on.

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS
I developed this lick to train my fingers to be able to cover the same ground while making it sound like there were more notes being played than are actually happening. Once I got it down, I started using it on the Minor/Major/Harmonic Minor scale in solos and it works great. I'm hoping that you guys can get it down translate it in to a real scale Feel free to add this to your vid if you like.


BTW:
Try to play this lick as written. It's NOT easy. Once you do one pass all the way descending and ascending, feel free to play around with it, go nuts!

NAILED IT!!!!! Also, I must point out that you were the ONLY Gmcer of all the membership that even made the attempt. Most folks took one look and just ran the other direction. I admit, I went overboard on this. It's got a long sequence of notes thats very easy to flub up when going just one direction, but when going both directions, it's super easy to lose ones place and hit a wrong note and then bam the entire thing is ruined. This is the longest drill we have EVER done. Ever. I must commend you yet again on stepping up and putting on a CLINIC of technique that shines a light on the right way to play something so that other students see that it is possible and even practical.

Your timing is smooth as silk. Not rushing, not lagging. Your hand synch is spot on. Zero extra string noise. Never a note out of place, clean strikes all the way through. In short you really killed it and this one is not an easy beast to kill. It was a pleasure to review this. I can only hope that your example spurs others to make their own attempt! Well done man.

Long sequence Sarge! Demanded lots of focus!

BAM!!! This is one of the most difficult Quick Licks that we have done yet. It's longest by far. It's also using the back and forth approach that we used before but doing it all the way down and then back up the strings. Full string traverse over every string both ways. This too is one of those "miss one note and start over" type licks. Yet again you didn't miss a single note. Gotta give you huge props for doing this one and doing it well. This is an endurance lick and will burn your arm off if you are not careful, but if used wisely it can really enhance your hand strength and endurance.

HE SHOOTS, HE SCORES!!!! Nice one. This is a very complex drill. It's the longest drill we have ever done in this series. It's got a LOT of notes in it. There are hundreds of spots to miss just one note and then have to start over. Also, there is just an enormous amount of picking. So wads of chances to miss a single strike, and again, start over. I'm guessing you may have noticed this as you played through. I have to say WELL DONE!!! A very long and complex drill SORTED!!!! Your muting game is very strong here as well. No extra string noise. Your alternate picking has come a long way. Very good control and you are picking from the fingers back, and not from the elbow down. You've got it going on here and that T Shirt is DA BOMB btw

SCORE!!!!!! Now that's what I'm talking about!!! This is a very complicated and very long lick. Many folks just can't make it all the way through it. You breezed through it with no trouble at all!!!!!! Making it looks easy. I did not make a requirement for fingering so using the first 3 fingers is fine, however, do try to do this same thing using your pinky!! It's a great way to work up the power of the weakest finger!!

You have a very fine picking and fretting technique going on here and you have good pace as well, it's not rushing or lagging, you are just ripping through it like you were born to it!! This is what I love to see!!!In other words you just...

Well done!! This is a very complicatd lick in that it can drive your brain to the edge trying to remember where you are in the pattern. The pattern repeats but it's easy to get lost in it. You gotta have a very good idea of where the fingers are going next or it will get wonky quickly!! Good news is that your fingers new exactly where to go!! VERY NICE!!
Tone wise your distortion went missing again These are just quick licks and meant to be a quick thing that doesn't require a lot of prep. Is there a distortion pedal that you can leave plugged in to your practice setup so that you get more of a "Gig Tone" from your practice rig? it almost sounds like a clean amp channel? If this is all that can be managed, without it being a pain in the neck then that's ok. It's just that having some gain/distortion on the signal is a good thing in that it forces you to pay attention to the mute to preven sympathetic string vibrations which are enhanced by distortion.

But as for the drill you killed it and
