Sounds dangerously close to "music was better then" smile.gif It obviously was. But some folks just don't wanna hear that.

There is still some good music being made smile.gif It just died off a bit after the golden age of the 18-1900s.

hehe maybe this is because we were young and discovering the world during those years. Don't you think so?

Bingo!

Anyone looking at anyone else's list is gonna go "WTF, that record sucks" for at least one of the choices.

For example ...

Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow
George Benson - Breezin
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mounting Flame
Buddy Rich - The New One
Pat Martino - Consciousness
The Beatles - 62 to 66 and 67 to 70
Aerosmith - Rocks
Frank Zappa - Apostrophe
Deep Purple - Burn
Earth Wind and Fire - All n All

*I have at 100 that affected me at this point.

I'm sure somebody here thinks that one of my choices is lame. Maybe likes the band but doesn't dig the particular album choice. Or maybe has never even heard of it. Whatever right. I like it, you don't like it - doesn't matter. The choices are stuff that 'affected' you.

I reckon the Discharge one will be the one people don't like in my list. But man did it affect me!

Yes. There was a famous study a couple of years ago that showed, on average, people are only receptive to new music until their mid-30's. After reaching that age, people tend to believe: "all music was better when I was young" smile.gif.

Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Deftones - White Pony
Extreme - Waiting for the Punchline
Hammock - Asleep in the Downlights
Rory Gallagher - Deuce
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Alter Bridge - AB III
John Sykes - Nuclear Cowboy
Candlebox - Candlebox
The Crystal Method - Vegas
Mott the Hoople - Mott
Montrose - Montrose
Stabbing Westward - Darkest Days
Tesseract - Altered State
Tom Cochran - Ragged Ass Road
UFO - Phenomenon

Okay so... first of all... Thank you. Secondly...

This doesn't exactly answer the question whether music was better "back when" or not. It simply states that people tend to listen to more of the music that they were listening too while growing up. Which is a shame for sure but it doesn't specify if the actual musical content was actually superior or not as in: ;.The stimulus obtained and the musical information content was actually greater.; It makes a bunch of assumptions on the premise that this "trend" of the fact that people tend to avoid listening to "current" music has something to do with the person listening rather than it does with the music.

I mean if someone is into baroque music they're not gonna be satisfied listening only to contemporary classical music or experimental audio acoustic music. They're not going to get anything out of the extremely limited(but catchy) melodical content in a Carly Jae Jepsen or Katy Perry song if they're accustomed to listening to highly complex counterpoint.

This year I've been listening to mostly new music every week. None of the radio music admittedly, but I've not had many albums on that were older than 7 years. Last year I almost only listened to early 20th century composers(Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, etc).

It would be a shame to stamp some psychological ageism diagnosis on people without adequate proof. And I don't think this study qualifies as that.

Nobody can ever answer the question whether one song is "better" than another. All forms of artistic expression are valid. However, most people have preferences for different kinds of music and, as Gabriel suggested, those preferences are often related to age. This study found evidence to support that view.

No, but you can answer if it's objectively more dense in terms of musical information. I think it's dangerous to take these ambiguous statistics as conventional wisdom. Especially since we don't know if people are still trying new music and then returning to things they know they like after being intellectually starved with newer music. Which could be very likely. This study also focuses on popular music, which we can't really use as a template for everyone.

Not me smile.gif. It'd be tough to argue with any of those. Every one of them had a profound influence.

My overall observation after a solid 50 years of continuous music listening and interacting with others is that 'most' folks are extremely narrow in their music preference and selection ... regardless of their age or taste.

That is quite sad. Wonder if that extends to other things as well. Book preferences, films, activities at large.
