Uneven Open String Picking
INTRO:
This lick features fierce alternate picking using open strings with string crossing (String Traverse). It should pose a challenge even to the experienced shredder - and is guaranteed to give you a picking workout!

It is based around the E minor scale.

Here is the tab. It's 16th notes done at about 200 bpm. As long as it fits, you can play it at really any speed you like. No matter how slow. And you don't have to do all the repeats if you don't want. Just one each would be fine smile.gif I know this is pushing things a bit. please let me know if you have questions and let me know how I can help make this lick part of your bag of tricks!!

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS
It's from our recent GABE BRIT METAL COLLAB! We are going to use the brit backing track for this so you can have a track to play over if you prefer it to a metronome. You can click on the mp3 file above to download it and use it in your DAW (Reaper/Nuendo/Logic/Etc.) so that you can play with the backing track and use the lick in a solo context.

BTW: This lick is nearly impossible to play at speed. Don't beat yourself up about it. It's something to work on that keeps paying dividends.

WARM UP LICK
This lick is a warmup to the main lick. If you can get this down, the main lick should be no problem. Try to start with an upstroke if you can and keep it all inside alternate picking. However, if you are more comfy doing it another way, that's ok as well. In the end it's up to you how you want to play. I'm doing this as a purely inside picking thing simply because it's a bit more efficient for the hand and allows me to play the lick at speed. Another player may do it as all outside picking in order to play it at speed. Working through these type of things is part of your journey. When folks try to force you to play one way or another, it's usually because they play that way. In the end it comes down to you smile.gif

So close!!!! I need you to try to finger this the same way that I did in the original preview vid so using the first finger on the 3rd fret and the third finger on the fifth fret. On the high E, start with the fith fret, then sixth fret (pinky) then third fret (first finger). Use the first finger for the B string the entire way. This is a HARD lick to play. You have the idea just a tweak is needed!!

That's it! You finger position is good and your mute is solid. Timing is smooth and your using the PINKY! The pinky is key in this and I see you modded the lick to get more reach with the pinky. Great idea. You can add notes all the way up the neck to get practice jumping around on the neck. This is what I was looking for. In other words you just..

LEVELED UP!!!!

Impressive. The picking required in this is really tough. It requires constant string traverse, and there is no gap between any of the notes. The purpose being that if you miss even one, you'll hear it and get to start over. Also, it's designed to test your muting as you've got two open strings that you have to deal with the entire time. So you have to mute them enough to keep them from ringing, but not mute them so much that you kill all resonance. Congrats, you found the balance. It's muted, but not too muted. You also hit every note, each time, and there are plenty of chances to miss one. In short, you KAAAARUUUUSSHHED it. And..

LEVELED UP!!!!

NICE!!! This is a very complicated licks to play properly and from what I can see of your picking hand and fretting hand, you've got it!!!! Id like to see more of your picking hand if possible, but I can see enough of it here smile.gif It looks like your palm mute technique is solid as well, I do wish I could hear it a bit better as well. Something worth working on in the next batch but lets just work with what we've got. You have a very nice and tight picking technique going on which is very tightly synched to yoru fretting hand and that's great!! If you have drift between your picking/fretting hand, a lick like this just falls apart. The issue many folks run in to is "trem picking" which is just sorta fast picking not tied to any given note on the fretted hand. A lick like this doesn't work well with innacurate picking. The good news is your picking appear to be spot on!! In other words you just...

Bingo! That's it smile.gif This lick is a bit odd in that it's not like most licks. You've got a good handle on it. As you keep working it, you'll get more speed. This lick sounds best when played at a fairly breakneck pace so that the notes almost blend together. That is going to take some serious work. So don't get thrown off by it. Give it time. Even doing it now and then. For you got it and ....

Very tricky. It honestly takes quite a while to play this at speed as it's such a bizarre lick. It's not a scale, or anything similar, it's really a picking drill turned in to a lick. It's worth adding a few reps to your routine as you will smooth it out and speed it up as you go and eventually it will seem very easy. At which point, you'll be able to pick any thing you want at any speed you'd like.

Well done! Like I Always say. The point of all of this is to be able to play actual Music and that's exactly what you are doing. You have gotten the lick down first and then are jamming beyond it. It sounds like you are really starting to put it together! Keep it up!

Hi,

When I so this post I liked the lick and the Backing Track so much that I had to do it right now.

So here is my take.
Playing the Quick Lick at the beginning and then made an improvisation over it.

There are a few spots in my improvisation that I don't like (but overall I like my improvisation), I did it in less than an hour so I didn't practice so much on this one since I wanted to record it as fast as I saw it.
