You may leave it blank and explain it in text description like:
"will ship worldwide BUT contact me before bidding"

Or else you might ask Shredmandan to answer,
he has had lots of transactions on ebay if I'm correct.

Well eBay is my specialty. It all depends on the size of the item. If it small and can be mailed first class or priority mail then you can use the shipping calculator on ebay or USPS.com. Most of the time it is about the same price for any where in the US if you are using the US Mail. If it is big you can tell ebay to calculated UPS automatically for the buyers address. The shipping will be calculated automatically as soon as ebay know where the winner lives. Either way you do not leave the shipping blank or it will mean you are offering to ship for free.

How big is your item?

Also, The best way to EVER learn anything about selling on ebay is to search for other items similar to yours and see how other do it, not to live by but it is how I learned most of what I know.

Well leadbreak seems to know about Ebay as well, but i didnt read all of his post.My advice on the shipping is 1.Only ship to United States and maybe Canada at most, here's why.It is a pain to ship out of state cause it has to go through customs and you have to fill out extra paper work ect ect. 2.make sure you know how much your item weights and what you are going to ship it in.

You can leave that area blank and it will just say ask seller ,but its best to either use a shipping calculator or give a price. If you could tell us what your selling and how big it is that would help alot.Let me know more and i can help you, also you can PM me if you like smile.gif

I noticed afew things you posted that are not the same for me atleast. The biggest one is that prices are about the same using US mail, thats totaly wrong atleast for me.USPS works by putting area's in the USA in shipping zones. Each zone costs more to ship to.Example i live in Tennessee and i can ship a item to New York for $5.00 and that same item can cost me over $10.00 to send to California. If you use a flat rate box than you can ship anywhere in the USA for one price of $8.95 but thats only if your item is small enough to fit in that box. Also if you leave shipping box blank it will just ask for you to contact seller for shipping details, the only way it will offer free shipping is if you click a box that says free shipping and then you still have to select a carrier.

Ok, I did kind of say that wrong. I sell a certain item about 5 items a week that goes priority mail. It weights 3 pounds. I charge everyone 8.00 for shipping and I make money on shipping. But I do make less if it goes across country but either way the 8.00 will usually cover it. I ship another item that is only 2oz. I can ship it anywhere (in the US) for 1.48 First class but I still put 5.00 in the listing.
I should have said it is easy to decide a flat price that will cover any location using USPS

That is also true about the free shipping but with the 1500 items sold in 07, I know I want the buyer to see everything up front. I never rely on the customer to do what he is suppose to do, it will get you bit.

I also never buy from a seller that says contact him for shipping. When I am the buyer, I just prefer it that way. I base everything I sell on how I like to buy. Seems there are a lot of people that like buying the way I do, and that is clear flat rate shipping and no misunderstandings.

Ok, enough business, back to the strings.
