No offense, but I don't think Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Randy Rhoads, David Gilmour, Dimebag etc., should be anywhere close to the top 100.

In my opinion, how much a guitarist influenced others, how much a guitarist expressed "emotion," "passion," "feel," etc, and how much a guitarist contributed to the world of guitar is no matter. Since emotion, passion, and feel cannot be defined and has different meanings among listeners, I think it should not be brought up at all when making a list like this. I think the basis should be how much each guitarist understands the fundamentals of the guitar itself. Having said that, my Top 20 would have to be...

1- Yngwie Malmsteen
2- Jason Becker
3- Marty Friedman
4- Michael Angelo Batio
5- Chris Impellitteri
6- Shawn Lane
7- Paul Gilbert
8- Tony MacAlpine
9- Vinnie Moore
10- Michael Romeo (No one has a better knowledge of theory)
11- John Petrucci
12- Steve Vai
13- Greg Howe
14- Joe Satriani
15- Buckethead
16- Rusty Cooley
17- Fransceso Farerri
18- Bruce Bouillet (Paul Gilbert's sidekick. Extremely underrated)
19- Glen Drover (Also extremely underrated, listen to Burnt Ice, Washington is Next, etc.)
20- Eric Johnson.

I think its clear that you are very into shred, and your list represents some superb technicians, and awesome players, but there is more to guitar than a single style, and people like David Gilmour aren't pretending to be shredders, they are something very different, and its not really fair to either genre to compare them and say one is better than the other in shred terms.

For me, the best and only criteria is how much a guitarists playing moves me emotionally, whether its by playing 100 notes perfectly accurately, or by picking 5 perfect notes and playing them in a specific way - the first is Steve Vai, the second is Dave Gilmour, and I love them both but for completely different reasons.

Ah yes, but you assume I have that option smile.gif In reality my guitars are all packed away and I have no room to unpack them ... In any case, on a regular night I read the forum in between practice chunks so I can do both wink.gif

In the end ... its hard to judge who is a better player then the other etc...Depends on the type of music you are into and the style you prefer ..

But Jimi Hendrix , even though i don't like him that much deserves the number one spot , he was the pioneer and without him to satriani and vai tongue.gif...

All were inspired by him! ...though new guitarist will surpass pioneers in emotional playing and skill and what not , but pioneer , being the first to do something is never going to be surpass ..

And yes after looking at this list , lets go play guitar instead tongue.gif ..

John is a great guitar player, but nobody realizes this because he doesn't really show it in most of his songs.

Ok, so heres whats going down

I've been kind of distracted for the past two weeks due to the four F's (Family, Food, Friends, F<censored>) but now I'm really, really back, lol.

I'm in the process of organizing all the information, which I thought I'd have a lot more of by now. speaking of which, I'd like to thank;

For your contributions. In a perfect world, I would send you all fruitbaskets filled with D'Addario strings and guitar picks made from dinosaur bones, but for now you'll have to settle for my thanks.

But we're not done! I'm gonna keep this thread open for one more week for any more lists and whatnot, and then we'll get to actually putting this thing together.

Here is my list...finally. It was tough but I tried to be very unbias and not just look at my favourites. My list is a bit bluesy but I think I hit on a few other genres as well. I decided to list them alphabetically by last name just to be fair. For me each of these guitarist are unnique in their own way so to say one is better then the other is unfair. Normally I'd start this list with Jimi but that is just my opinion however I figured alphabetical was just easier as all could be number 1.

Chet Atkins
Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton
Tommy Emmanuel
David Gilmor
Buddy Guy
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Johnson
Robert Johnson
B.B. King
Yngwie Malmsteen
Brian May
Jimmy Page
Les Paul
Randy Rhodes
Steve Vai
Eddie Van Halen
Stevie Ray Vaughn
T-Bone Walker
Muddy Waters
