You have to structure your practice.

You absolutely need to dedicate time to repetitious exercises. Play the lessons with the backing music. Much like with learning any instrument, there is going to be boring and unexciting parts, but these parts are very important.

That being said, as an educator, I can tell you that you need to take a break every 15 minutes or you won't maximize your practicing. What I do with that time is take a solo or song I want to learn and work on that for five minutes or so and then go back in to practicing.

You'll find that on many of the exercises on this site you'll get better and when you see the improvement you'll probably become much more motivated. The hardest part is getting the ball rolling, once you get it going it should be much easier.

Remember, playing the guitar isn't all excitement, hot bitches, and heroin binges ending in a dirty tub in some hotel in Scottland, you have to suffer through some rather boring practice.

Now, the last thing I can say that helps make practice more entertaining is talking to your guitar like your giving a woman a good time - when I'm really working a sweeping lesson I say "Yeah baby, how'd you like that! That's what I'm talking about! Take that you dirty little guitar..."

wait... maybe you should ignore that last part.

Like Kris says in the videos you NEED to have a goals in mind when you are practicing whether its gaining a few bpms or eventually learning a complex portion of a song you must have some sort of goal in your head.

Also as much as it may seem to suck you have to work with the metronome and build up your skills or you will probably never get much better. But after awhile you may actually end up even having fun with the metronome it is definitely cool to notice that you are getting better, and it is possible relatively quickly if you do stay motivated.

I have only been playing for a little over three months and I already can do so many different things I never thought I'd be able to play. The key is just to put up with all the exercises and stick with them everyday, and then you will be well on your way. Good luck man wink.gif

hey luciferi -

first off i want you to know i was in the EXACT same spot as you!!! i practically wrote the book on ADD! haha

the second thing is that you've recognized the fact that you aren't getting anywhere without taking it seriously and practicing. i started playing when i was fourteen years old, my father handed me an acoustic guitar showed me three chords and that was basically the only education i got on playing the guitar. obviously i wanted to learn more and i wanted to play anything that rocked but was sooo far away from it... from then on i would get frustrated that i couldn't play any of my favorite songs and most of the time i'd get stuck in a rut. this is how it's been for years for me...

third my best friend picked up the guitar at 18 and within four months was 3 times better than me and i'd been "playing" for four years more! thats a real kick in the ass right there! that gave me some more motivation. i started to play more and more but then something else would come along and i'd lose interest and put the guitar down for another few months or i'd get frustrated i just wasn't getting any better.

what happened with me was that i moved four hundred miles from all of my friends and family and needed something to keep me occupied and outta the bars and thats when the guitar came calling. it's been my best friend ever since. i've grown a network of musicians down here that i work with or that i've met and it's helped keep the momentum going.

i knew i needed more and definitely some formal training and something that would give me the right steps to getting better. for years i brushed off scales thinking i could learn by ear what sounded good with what... COMPLETELY WRONG. thats where GMC came into play.

there's no doubt you're taking the right steps but you need something to drive you... a reason to learn! and it sounds like you really want to jam with your friends or even start a new band... that sounds like a perfect idea... dude you've got something to go for!!! use this as motivation!!!! you can do it and you've got the support of some of the best instructors you'll ever have the opportunity to learn from and an online community of people in the same boat as you that can help you along the way.

i hope this helped in some way...

good luck man i know you can do it!

My motivation right this minute is coming from being forty years old. If I do get good quick I will run out of time. It also goes back to the things adults used to push into our skulls about being responsible and getting a good education, and saving money. You get old that's fact, and today is the exact sum of all of your yesterdays.
You will be what you make yourself.
I did just what you are doing for most of my 22 years of playing, My buddies and I use to call it "Getting Side Tracked" We would site down to write a song and four hours later, well you know the story. I am mad at myself because I did not know how to practice and in a since I wasted all those practice years. It is the type of practice you find in here that you must do to succeed.
Here is what I say to you, Luciferi...
Go get your favorite recording of your favorite player, turn out all the lights and lay the floor. Crank it up and picture you playing the same stuff and that you are looking out into the audience and there sits some of your family and friends, ones that might have doubted you could do it. Picture their faces as if you were on stage playing. If you feel a cold chill run up your spine then you know how it will feel to actually do it.
Also, Set out to do hard practice for 20 minutes and then have fun, but after awhile do 20 more hard. It is sad that we must feel some success in order to be motivate to get more, but you will, Good luck to you.

PS. Here is something that I can not believe I left out. Try to find someone to teach what you know to. Now that I think about this was a big part of what turned everything around for me. I had a neighbor who wanted to play. He knew nothing, heck I looked like Jack the shredder to him. It motivated me to be the best one in the room for a change. It also help because I wanted what I taught him to be correct so I did more research to be sure I was teaching correctly. And most of all he was a better practicer than me so he was catching up quick, I had to get busy.

For me by far the most motivating is..

attending/playing shows, since its the ultimate goal to perform and you see other guitar players

you should try to become a more than bedroom shredder, and try to play with a friend or band at least once a week, so you have something to look forward to and to practice for
practicing for just the sake of getting better is kinda boring, you should practice to perform!

I sometimes feel bored with the guitar, but i practice with my band once a week and have guitar lessons, this prevents me from not playing guitar for a week and losing total motivation

I did that for 4 years. Thank goodness I discovered GMC, or else I would still have been sitting in my room playing random iron maiden songs.

hmm I guess listening to music is what make me wanna play, and wathcing music DVD's. I mean, after I saw the Eric Clapton Crossroads festival from 2001 I just wanted to play guitar all the time tongue.gif

I was the same guy, all I liked to do was play metallica and pantera and shit but skip every solo. My motivation came from my brother, he is 20 and I'm 21 (ive been playing for abour 4 years and i'm a noob too), but me and him got drunk and he told me we need to start a band, and it just so turns out my best friend is a drummer. So when we sobered up, we never takled about it much, because money and a place to play was a big issue, but finally I convinced him to clear out his extra bedroom and we set up in there, but my amp sucked, and GC had a no interest for 18 months deal so I get a 100w half stack and a new guitar, which still was enough. (by the way he went out and got a 1300 dollar PA system on the no interest plan). Being a band with goals motivated me so much, because I wasn't going to make my friends and brother play in a generic punk rock band that doesn't know how to use instruments and just wines into the mic, we wanted to play Save Me by Shinedown, and I decided no matter what I need to get that solo down, we picked that and In Bloom by nirvana because the solos are easier. Recently we picked up Wherever I may Roam by metallica, which when I was at cyberfret.com picking up some tab site links I can accross GMC. So in short my motivation is to not let my band down. Our goal is to play a full set at my brothers annual 4th of july party which will give us about 100 spectators, because its a joint party between his neighbor and him, and we are opening for a very very good band, which does mostly covers but the talent is f**king ridiculous, they are called Release. It is important that the band doesn't get held back just because I cannot take 30-60 minutes a day to practice. When I got into the Pent Scale lessons it took off from there, 30 minutes quickly turned into 2 hours because I was having so much fun.

The key is to make a goal that has a negative effect if you do not meet it, but it has to be a goal that if you do not meet it, it is simply because you were lazy, not because it was hard. And like I said a band, whether you wanna be a rockstar, a barstar, or a guyu who jams in his buddies basement and sounds like crap, you will get better cause you will play more and you will have a blast when you play your first song all the way through and realize, holy shit I just did that.

Go to the local pub and watch a cover band, to me there's nothing more inspiring than to see other people play. There's something special about live music. Or even better, go see Gary moore or something biggrin.gif

And for goals, you could pick a favourite guitar based song, pick one that's above your skill. And learn it! Rhythm and solo, everything, no cheating, note by note. That can be a challange so to be able to master it you may have to practise to improve your skills.
