Theory Classes, an idea

Hi everyone.

I have been reading up on a lot of theory, but it is very hard to comprehend all of the theory when one is alone. Of course it is possible to ask questions on the forums, and sometimes this works great, other times it leaves you even more confused than before.

I was thinking about how to improve theory learning. What is missing for me to fully grasp the many different concepts of theory, and i think i have an idea what could be done.

What would be great would be if the instructor was actually talking to me. Different people are prone to learn stuff different ways. ie: learning by hearing. Learning by doing. Learning by reading.

did you know that if you only read something you only remember ~30% of it, but if you read and hear it you will remember 65-70%?

So what i would suggest is to change the lessons and make them more like classes. I am not saying that the instructors should sit and hold your hand.

But i have some ideas to improve the learning:
  • Video to go along with the reading. If one could read it as well as hear it one would perhaps remember and perhaps get it the first time around. The instructor doesn't have to read the lesson for you.
Make it even better and let a different instructor give his oppinion and give the student another view upon the subject.
  • Homework. Let the students actually do some homework in order to really imprint the theory in the students minds.

I am very much aware that the suggestions above would give instructors more work to do, but i also believe that lessons would be improved 10-fold.

I hope you understand what i am getting at. It is kinda early and i still have a bit of jetlag, so i might be mumbling too much. wink.gif

Anyways. Let me know what you think.

Hey, It's a great idea.

Theory lesson: Andrew Cockburn is doing a good job. For now it's only a beginners level but it will get to a advanced level i think https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/first-steps-lets-play/ ://https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/so...eps-lets-play/

So maybe advenced theory lessons with more background information would be great. wink.gif

The homework idea is also a great: the MTP (Mentored Training Program) will give satisfaction in that matter. It's now i testing fase. When is the real thing gonna start?

i agree with you 100%. a video and homework that lets you use the theory bit by bit would be great! that´s why i can´t wait for the mentoring program to start!! i hope it will do exactly that...

Also Andrew made a new lesson about theory basics here. Check it out, it is highly intuitive.

I did not know that this lesson had been made. Its very informative, and is actually what i was suggesting.
I still believe that views from other instructors would be interesting in the more difficult theory lessons.

and the homework.. both in paper form and practice on the guitar..
for example it could be to locate all C chords on the fretboard, by analysing which notes are in the C chord, locating the notes on the fretboard, and then select the notes to create the chord. Of course the chord should actually be playable.

I had made a similiar request a couple of days ago.

I learn better in a teaching enviroment. The video lessons can incoprate specific reading, homework to accomplish and a sort of written test over what you have learned.

Well you have to remember that all instructors are extremely busy people.. and making lessons sure takes it's time, however everything you mentioned should be done with the new mentoring program, there is a large amout of people here who are more than capable to mentor in a broad aspects of guitar and music, and are just anxiously waiting for the testing period to end so they too can mentor someone.

So I think we should just wait a bit until the testing period of the mentoring program is over, and than I'm sure you, and anyone else who wants a more one on one approach with the theory lessons, can find a mentor who will do just that smile.gif

I can't wait for the mentor program either ^^

One thing I've been wanting to get clear, though: Will it be something like the Instructors + very experienced seniors/students that will have X amount of mentees? And weekly meetings on MSN or another chat where we discuss things, or..?

Mentoring program sounds cool guys. I am also very excited to see what will come out of it !

You all made very good points about theory in lessons . I try to include as much information as possible in all my videos regarding theory and harmony. In future lesson I will dedicate one entire lesson that will be just theory and harmony usage of scales and other important things that will connect that to a Solo or Riff or Melody that will come in future lessons. I hope this will be great addition and you guys will hopefully benefit a lot from it!

Yes I agree with you guys about mentoring program, and share your enthusiasm as well. I can't wait to see this great idea turning into reality, I think a lot would benefit from it. smile.gif

Ya, i know i would. One needs confirmation or correction on the things one has practiced which is currently not happening that much..
