Green day! the worst band in the history of music.
The guitarist CANNOT play the guitar, he dosent know one scale or chord
he just knows the powerchord shape and moves it about....and dont get me started
on how XXXX the drummer is

(although ur musical tast is not dead seeing as you like ACDC! biggrin.gif )

yeah billy joe even admitted he doesn't know how to play the guitar! he said before they recorded nimrod he didn't even know what a scale was or anything other than power chords and admitted to guessing on those too!! haha at least he was honest... of course after the song good riddance came out everybody was like oh man billy joe is awesome... yeah definitely not... considering that song just doesn't have distortion on it other than that it's the same as all the rest. haha

nate

btw - ac/dc rocks man!!!!!! the young brothers were an awesome duo together...

to all who were offended -

i apologize... i really did read in guitar world a quote from billy joe saying he did not know how to play the guitar. i would never commit slander against anybody.... green day has put out some great music ESPECIALLY their early stuff. there is something awesome about how raw their music was back then. so again sorry kris and to any green day fans.

But Billy Joe must be really good if he can make such hit songs without using a scale.

I agree, entirely.

The world is full of great bands that "didn't know how to play". The point of playing the guitar for me was always to write songs that people liked. Some of the greatest riffs in the history of music can be played by just about anyone. The Ramones are another great example.

Good Riddance was played as the closing song for the series Friends, it was the walking song for half the graduations in the US, and will be played on the Radio for a long long long time. To me, someone who writes a song like that has to be a great guitarist, because the entire point is to create music that moves people.

yeah green day definitely did something right! i wasn't trashing good riddance... my opinion is just that the guitar part wasn't what stood out about the song it's the lyrics and thats why it has been played in thousands of different venues... it's the feeling the song gives. simplicity can make great music too...

nate

again i have no problem with green day... and i agree with what all of you are saying about being judgmental and everything...

this thread really went south quick! haha biggrin.gif

btw - i saw green day live multiple times and they put on an awesome show!!!

Sort of like the Ramones were, very simple, however an example of how good songs don't have to be complicated. The Ramones had about 7 songs, that was it, it was repetitive after that. But they were 7 good songs. I will give Green day about twice that, which really, ain't bad.

There are a lot of bands out there that only use power chords in their songs and normally I would not like that music but there is something about green day that just makes their songs right on!

Not a big fan at all. But I totally respect his incredible ability to write catchy songs that everyone will like. That's where I think his skill lies.

I think that Green Day is a great band and they have great songs. I don't care if they know or not what they are playing. That's not important for me. I just put their cds and I hear nice songs. There are a lot of shred or jazz guitar players that can't do a nice song.

Green Day may not consist of the greatest musicians on Earth. Armstrong may not be able to play like Shawn Lane or Rusty Cooley. But he is a hell of a songwriter. I love Green Day because they ROCK. Was Cobain a "great" guitarist by the standards being used in this thread? Nope...but Nirvana sure gets a lot of respect. Could Angus Young hang with Jason Becker? I think not. Being able to shred diminished sweep arpeggios up and down the neck is fun. I'd rather be able to write killer rock songs that move people in some way. A bit of advice....if you get so focused on technical ability that you lose sight of how fun it is to play rock/metal/whatever, you're probably going to get sick of playing guitar at some point, because it turns into work instead of enjoyment. And I don't know about any of you, but the last thing I need is another job.

Excuse me while I get off my soapbox.....sorry if I sounded unbearably self-righteous there.... rolleyes.gif

Well i can just say that Green Day was the first band i ever listened to, it's where my music life started when my friend introduced them to me. But after a year or so i stopped listening to them.

As for technical abilities - i am having great fun playing arpeggios and crazy runs up and down the neck! It depends on a person what he enjoys so we can't say what is best! Just play what you like and that's it!

The songs i am working on now....i don't expect anyone to like them - the most important for me is that i am having huge amount of fun playing that song! It is 80% shred but hell - i love it!!!

So just stick to the things you love and you'll be happy!
