Hey all

I have a question regarding fretting hand positioning. I'm doing this Lesson at the moment.
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...inger-work-out/

If you click on Lesson step 3, you can see the way he positions his hand/fingers. Its as if the finger are pointing down the neck of the guitar, towards the bridge.

The way i do it is by placing my thumb around the center of the neck, and have my fingers almost at a 90 degree angle to the neck. But if you notice, you can see my pinky almost touches the fret with the side of the finger, instead of the tip of the finger. (It does this because of the rather large stretch though, normal at touches with the tip.)

Well, what i want to know is, do i need to work on my positioning? Should i learn to do it, like he does it in his video?

Well, there isn't only one way for this. You are using a more technical position that gives you more capability of big stretches while Dejan is using a position that makes you have more strength on your fingers. Both positions are ok, and I sincerely change from one to the other depending on what I'm going to play. So I recommend you to practice both positions...

that position looks good for what you are doing there, but don't forget that depending on what you are playing your position is gonna change. Sometimes you need your thumb all the way above the neck, or sometimes you need as close to the first string as possible.

Mate, listen to what your body tells you when you're playing. It will usually adapt itself naturally to the thing you want it to do. Just try and observe smile.gif that position looks correct for what you're trying to play indeed wink.gif

Yes, all the guys are 100% correct with their advice.. you will change through positions all the time on the guitar, depending on what you are playing. I tend to use that hand position (in the pic) when performing more technical legato runs or wide stretches.. the rest of the time I'm usually playing with my thumb at the top, or over, the neck and with a slight angle smile.gif

Well then i will continue this way then. I was just concerned because

a) The hand position of the instructor in the video is pretty different from mine
cool.gif both my pinky and partly my index finger touches the fretboard/string with the side, more than the actual tip itself. Or, rather the side of the tip.

That's ok.. sometimes the side of my finger is fretting notes instead of the actual tip.. it's quite a normal thing when you're playing wider stretches too smile.gif
