A rather sobering bit about the realities of the Biz of Music. There is money to be had, you just have to be in the right spot when it starts to rain!!

I think it was Metallica. Anyway, some band acknowledged that selling albums isn't that profitable with the net and piracy. They said that tour merch and tickets are most reliable income. So it's not about writing a few songs and counting dollars for the rest of the year but actually lots of hard work. And interacting with people in real life, something I find difficult smile.gif

There is always the OLA ENGLUND approach smile.gif He was earning a living at music before he dealt much with the public. He manged to get a huge youtube following which can generate a decent income if it's big enough. Then he started charging money for gear reviews. Second revenue source. Eventually, he got invited to join two different touring bands. Third income source. At this point, he was not selling many records, certainly not having songs that were "hits", but he did make and sell his own cds which had a special version (contained midi drum files and extras) for $40 each. Third income source. Now he has his own guitar line. Fourth income source. Also he does clinics. Fifth income source. So without any hit records, he's earning a good living and raising children. So it's possible smile.gif

I like Ola's approach but it all probably started after reaching a certain level at Youtube. While it doesn't happen over one night, it's still a great way to be successful. Much better than starting out on a big stage and/or with famous label, getting in a debt you'll never pay off. When I get good enough to make a living through the music, this is the most likely path I'll take. I might do busking as well. smile.gif

There's a lot of over simplification in the that video. There's also a lot of just 'wrong' in there too.

1) A smart band or solo artist doesn't take an advance. Keep your day job. This has been gospel since the late 60s.
2) Songwriters get royalties from live gigs. BMI, ASCAP, SESAC and Soundscan collect those from the venues large and small as well as streaming services.
3) A smart songwriter starts their own publishing company. If you don't, you'll only ever get 50%.
5) You've ALWAYS had to sell a shitload of records to make any money - at least 500,000 units. Streaming, youtube, etc. are all potentially 'free' so of course you need well into the millions to see any real dough.

*6) Movies and TV revenue have always been the way that songwriters make their most money.

It took him about 10 years. It's a slow road to be sure. But it can be done smile.gif
