Has anyone seen this ???

This is the most insulting thing I have seen on a supposedly proffessional news cast. This was all over the news here in Canada today mad.gif

I should add 4 Canadians were killed this past week in US operations. Unbelievable.

I should also note this does anger me but not at Americans, simply the hosts of this television show, Don't what to start any conflicts on here smile.gif

Thanks for posting the link Andrew I have heard that cotroversy all day.

I am finishing Bachelor Degree in Political Science at Montral University and I had an external politic class today. The teacher spoke a lot of that story. I can't really make a comment because I really don't want to offense anyone in this forum by saying something that wouldn't be correctly interpreted.

I really do not agree with what they say in this video because the conclict in Afghanistan is really complicated. I am also desapproving the intervention of the Canadian army in this conflict. At the same time I understand That what as been said in this video has emerge in a part of the American culture.

Ok I have said enough .... I don't want to get in trouble..

Good night folks ..... And PEACE to each and everyone of you .

I TIVO redeye since it airs at 2 AM here and I saw this a few days ago. Red Eye is not a professional news cast. It is a comedy show and at times is very funny.
The host actually agrees with one of the guests about having tremendous respect for the Canadian Military. What exactly is insulting to Canadians in this bit? Is it the ridiculous country comment? If so it is a joke and next week it will be Sweden, then Belgium and so on. Anyway I am sorry you were offended by it. I know how you feel. The whole world has had some kind of a problem with the US in the last few years and it does get irritating.

Since the Canadians are about the only country that sends combat effective troops to war with us (USA) they need encouragement not abuse. He should have went at this story a little differently. He has also apologized just like everyone else who does satire and slips up.

I have no problem with the US, its the fact they said that the Canadian army was a joke and that we are going to be off doing yoga and what have you. To clarify once again I have no problem with the US simply with hosts of that show. One of my friends was wounded severly in Afghanistan and many people from my area have killed throughout the course of the conflict.

Here is what some countries spend on their military. We also provide the military defense for Iceland, I don't have a problem with that. I don't watch TV. The only problem I had with that video is that the jokes were not funny enough.

USA

4.06% of GDP (2005 est.)

Canada

1.1% of GDP (2005 est.)

Britain

2.4% of GDP (2005 est.)

Australia

2.4% of GDP (2006)

France

2.6% of GDP (2005 est.)

That video really did seem to ooze the `we're better than you` stereotypical attitude that makes the USA very unpopular in many countries.

If it was just meant to be a silly, jokey style news report then I guess thats fine...but the childish sentiments coming through seemed pretty pathetic to me.

That video is indeed insulting.
I don't understand, I am not into politics at and this certainly doesn't make me want to be.
I personally have much better respect in countries that spend the least money in war...

Just because you give it a different name doesn't make it any less hurtful to the people who have served in this war and their families. Like I said four soldiers bodies came home this week from Afghanistan this week and then this. If you make a bad racist joke and call it satire it still isnt funny, not that this is the same but it is similar.

I agree in that there is no room for this kind of stuff on tv, or anywhere for that matter. Even though they make these kind of criticisms to every nation, going off of what Kahall said, it's still wrong. This kind of grave sense of "humor" just isn't right when it involves stuff like this. Obviously I would still not approve of it even if the host turned around and insulted the U.S's military like that. It's just not right.

EDIT: one thing I can laugh at though is that this report came from FOX news. In my eye, they are ridiculously conservative, and anything that anyone did to undermine Bush's policy were basically condemned, in one way or another, either subtly or quite loudly, by this network. So it really doesn't surprise me that this kind of bigotry came from FOX! laugh.gif

They are going to make fun of Canada? We have almost no debt!! Wonder why?

Maybe these hosts will still think their comments are funny when the US is owned by the chinese.... wait they already are.

EDIT:

And just want to add, this is Canada's way of saying "fight your own war." This is the thanks we get for spending billions of dollars helping them out to fight a war that they started?

It is one thing to poke fun at a nieghbouring country (we do it to the irish all the time err and the welsh & oh yeah the jocks and french also), but to mock a country that is facing military capability issues based on its support and commitment to a war that they did not start is just infuriating. add to the fact that they keep on harping on about the american hero complex that the rest of the world has to suffer makes this "news" teams ignorance stand out like a sore thumb (satire or not) when you consider the fact that that the american banks have led us in to one of the worst economic downturns that the western world has seen in my lifetime. and yes this will also have an affect on western military capability whilst national treasuries are shelling out billions to shore up banks that are facing collapse due to american led investment strategies.
i am choosing to ignore the comment they made to european support to thier war effort.
usually satire has to be amusing as well as occasionally insulting, i can only find the latter in this piece. mad.gif

just to add; my problem is with the insularity and ignorance of the american media not the people, who are decent and hard working and generally have a great sense of humour.

I am all up for jokes and humor, in fact I can go non stop into that mode and just laugh all day long - as I am sure most of you can as well biggrin.gif

The thing about this video was I didn't find a single thing they said funny it ! It had to do a lot with voice tone and narration which sounded (to me) like they were trying to be funny but failed miserably. I really think they should practice their comedy on something less serious before they move onto insulting countries wink.gif

But it is a joke! In bad taste, sure, (and not very funny to begin with) but people make fun of every country out there, including the USA. This is nowhere near as bad as some comedians get, for example. Besides, you just can't let it get to you, I laugh along with comedians who poke fun at Americans/whites/musicians/any-other-category-I-might-be-included-in just as much as every other joke.

I can understand why this would rattle anyone Canadian and even faintly patriotic, especially at a time when conflict across the globe is at its most prolific since the 2nd World War. The current situation in the middle east makes any random comments bring very sensitive feelings to the surface for a lot of people, especially for a series of conflicts that gets harder to justify and perpetuate every day.
Just remember the people who are over there risking life and limb from all nations for a pittance of pay and for political motives most of them couldnt care less about, they are the people who should be offended by these comments but they wont be, I know because I served in the armed forces for a while and had the pleasure of meeting and training with the US and Dutch Marines whom I found to be extremely professional and well trained, of course it didnt stop us taking the mickey out of them at every oppurtunity, nor did it stop them doing the same to us, and trust me we said things a lot worse to each other than was said in this broadcast.
The Canadian army has a long, illustrious and well documented history of putting its brave men and women on the front line and no flippant and ignorant comments will ever change that.

Satirist's should stick to ridiculing politicians, thats what theyre there for isnt it? wink.gif

These guys unfortunately don't have an idea what they are talking about, the comedian on the left of the host is a junkie, and all in all, they should be forbidden to talk like this in public IMO.

I agree that he was trying to be funny, but his IQ is too low actually do it properly. Every canadian I know is proud that we have no military. That's what makes us Canada.

However, you must agree that saying things like "this pathetic country" or "we should invade them now" is no where near funny. We all know it isn't going to happen, but it's like telling your friend that you could bone his wife anytime you want.

Yes, what ever happened to making fun of Harper because of his leather vest. (Which I might add that he served me pancakes while wearing it for a press conference in Calgary during Stampede time).

Thats a really good analogy hahah. The leather vest was pretty awesome and you are right I pride myself in knowing that we contribute MUCH more to peace keeping missions than invasions and that the 1% we spend of our GDP on military is so low because of the great health care and social programs we have.
