15 Minutes - Warm Up (Imperative for not damaging those super sexy fingers biggrin.gif)
30 minutes - Alternate Picking (Scales and a bit of simple string skipping. Practicing some Dream Theater runs and what not)
30 Minutes - Down Picking ONLY (Get the Metallica riffage on the go to a metronome)
20 Minutes - Sweep Picking (Lots of sweep practice)
20 Minutes - Tapping (Tap Tap Tap)
30 Minutes - Theory (The Good Stuff - Nick's lessons and Andrew's great theory board)
30 Minutes - Improv Recording (Recording over backings to see what I've learnt and to try and incorporate ideas and licks)
1 Hour - Wind Down (I'd be lieing if I said this wasn't a pint or two at the pub)

I'm gonna force myself to stick to this practice plan. It will be scalable also. So if I know I have 4 hours free I will practice more on things and if I only have 2 hours I'll scale times down. What do you guys think? I was inspired by one of Kris' posts on his practicing.

Also any songs, lessons that I can practice as part of the above sections would be awesome and so helpful smile.gif

I made a practice schedule like this once. I stuck to it 1 or 2 times, then I bailed out. I really need to try it again, this time I have a new plan, which hopefully will work. I'll dwell deeper into that some other time probably smile.gif

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to comment on the practice schedule.

Do you plan to incorporate Economy Picking into any section? And what about legato?

Also - note to self as well: Two handed tapping, arpeggios with tap/slides/what not.

I will start to incorporate those when I get a bit more advanced with my playing. Like arpeggios I will be learning in the theory section to aid with my sweep picking playing and tap slides will be added when I master tapping at a suitable volume. Same with two handed tapping. I can already use economy picking and use legato too much. But I shall incorporate them somewhere.

Yeah, that's understandable!

I too use legato too much, but I geuss you gotta keep the skills...erhmm... focused all the time and not neglect any techniques, though it's difficult.

It's a good plan if you can stick with it. I suggest rotating exercises so they don't get boring, and work on some chords as well - no good soloing withouth good chordal work.

I'm a chordal god lol. biggrin.gif

I do practice chords a fair bit but I need to learn the theory behind them a bit more before using them more frequently. My chord playing is ok currently. My down picking is very poor and my alternate picking is alright. But I know chords are imperative.

Seems prety good man.

There may be things (i think legato/economy picking was mentioned) that you don't want in the routine right now but want to save for later, but this seems prety good- as long as you're happy with it ofcourse.

I finished a week or so compiling my "super-duper" guitar workout- that's quite specific to me- i'm gonna try and go into as much detail as i can on each section in my practise agenda- so have a read of the coming entries and maybe you'll get (just a little) but of inspiration of what you can throw in yours: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...p;blogid=6&

I'll be posting a warm-ups entry later today (unless i get struck down..)

You can then benefit very much if you dedicate 1h of theory per session. my 2 cents. smile.gif

As long as you dont bite more than you can chew, i tried making plans like this but couldnt keep up with it, so i settled for a little less, but more consistently, if you know what i mean, good luck though smile.gif

I gotta do something like this... seems night after night I just play, Ill learn songs and play along with them...
Im gonna try to put something like this together or I might use your practice schedule except wind down time would be just jamming to whatever i want. Ill probably cut out downpicking and add 30 minutes to theory, since i always skip out on learning that..

I do struggle with sticking with practicing for 3 hours of useful practicing a day. I usally go 2 or 3 days with not playing and then I will play for 5 or 6 hours in one day.

A good consistent practice of 1.5-2h a day will get you further than 2 days of not working and doing a marathon 5-6 hours session. Also it creates a habit and bonds you to the guitar more. I also did a lot of long sessions, but after a while you risk to burnout, and risk to get bored with guitar. I suggest you start easy and work your way to bigger and bigger sessions, rather than other way around.

Unfortunately you got it bang on. I have become bored with guitar and usually I see it as a chore. I'm trying to get the fun back again. I love playing in a band and learning songs to play cover sets and writing songs to play originals sets but I don't like practicing.

Spot on on that one too. I became less fond of guitar playing - it's coming back though, and I started seeing it as a chore. When I joined a band it actually didn't help much, as I would then HAVE to play 2 times a week, and I would HAVE to come up with new things often. I quit the band and now I'm here in my own privacy trying to make the fun of it - being creative when I feel like being it.

I really enjoy being in a band to be honest as I have met so many great friends through picking up the guitar. That side of playing I will always be glad I picked up the guitar as it has given me many opportunities that I may not have had in life.

True enough. When I'm out of this rut of not being able to come up with any music that I'm satisfied with, I may well join a band. For the past 1½ years, I've been in a kind of a writer's block. Everything I write dissatisfy me. I may like it the first two or three times around, but then I won't like it anymore.

Playing a guitar and doing music in life can only serve to you as a good purpose of course. You learn new stuff, make new contacts, meet people etc. The essence of practicing is not to fall down to a routine and experience it as a chore. How to do that? Well it is and individual thing, but it is generally always good to look at the practice as some sort of interesting thing that you can do for like 15 minutes or so. Why 15 minutes? Well it is better to take a guitar with a feeling that you will be playing 15 minutes, and let it take over you for 2 hours, that to make a big schedule and know you have to practice for 3 hours. Then you will feel bad if you get bored after 1 hours or so. So, always start small and work your way to bigger sessions gradually.

Practicing must be very flexible, you don't always have fixed time etc.. so take the guitar as much as you can, always take a metronome and practice practice practice. Then during practice you will notice some good things that you can practice some more. The good thing with practice is that there is so much thing to work on, that you will never run out of ideas. So when you see something you like and wanna work on it, work on it slowly and gradually and it will be ok in a long run. Always think in a long run, like "in a few months I will be able to play better, although I don't feel it now I KNOW it will be that way as long as I keep taking my guitar and taking a metronome a practice some more.
