Some may have seen this before, some maybe not. It's Metallica in the studio so if you're offended by crude language, etc, don't watch..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=546KjKMB9kw

I find myself watching this every once in a while. Some may argue whether Kirk Hammet's a great player or even a really good player, but he's a heck of an influence to a lot of guitarists. If I remember right, Pavel started out playing Metallica riffs.

Two things in the video that keep me coming back:

The obvious one is that even good players can make a complete mess out of a song.

The not so obvious one is the lack of music-speak. "The first one starts on the open, the second one starts on this one (points at the third fret) and then the third one starts on that one (points at the fifth fret)."

Maybe I'm not as bad off as I think I am. smile.gif

(Edit: Reading this back, it's sounds to me like I'm bashing Kirk a bit. That wasn't my intent. It's more of a reminder that everyone has good days and bad days and that when I'm having a bad day I need to remember that it's not that bad and everyone goes through it.)

laugh.gif Oh, man I had a good laugh. Especially from about 1:23 on... anyways, everyone has bad days, I agree completely. Some days I can't even seem to play the simplest of things.

I LOVE METALLICA as you all know... there my favorite bands but even the pros have some things that take work. It's not like once your in a band even the hard stuff comes natural. I think a lot of people think that. "Why Can't He Play That? He IS In A Band!"

i have seen it before and laughed...

METALLICA ROCKS!

Some times it's very hard to play (interpret) what someone else has written and to play it exactly as they have it in mind. Especially if it's the first time that person or anyone for that matter has ever played it outside the one who wrote it. As for what I mean: James and Lars write all the music and James writes all of the Lyrics for Metallica songs, then they bring the finished songs to the group and introduce them one by one. What I think that video is showing is the first time that particular song was ever brought to the group and it's the first time the band is doing a walk thru on the song. Not an easy thing to do, especially when a song changes up as much as that one does. That and Kirk is definately having a bad day. Nice to see that they are as human as you and I are.

I agree wit the core of your post.

But for a little more perspective on the video clip, it actually wasn't the way St Anger worked. After I caught that clip, I watched the movie (Some Kind of Monster) again last night so it's relatively fresh in my head. They actually jammed on these songs and worked together on the lyrics together instead of the normal way they'd been doing it.

No kidding. It's amazing the amount of gear they had. It drive me nuts the first time I saw the movie trying to ID all the different gear they had around. I guess when you have that kind of money you can get whatever you want.

The oddest thing I remember seeing was a Nord Lead. Metallica with a synth??

Remember when they took Trujillo into a room to pick his gear (who the hell shows up to an audition with no gear??)? The guy said that the band had around 500 guitars..

Kirk is a great guitarist for sure, I do remember seeing a programme on the making of the black album, and Bob Rock gave him hell coz he hadnt done enough homework (as he put it) on his solo`s.

I think its great that you get to see that these people are human and do make lots of mistakes, brings it all into reality smile.gif
