GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Trying My Luck With Some Growling

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Feb 1 2020, 11:55 PM

Last couple of days I've felt a bit angry at the world, but it has allowed me to dig into these type of vocals! Let me know if I've completely lost the plot or if it sounds okay laugh.gif

I am impressed big time not just by your growls but by the production quality of this track! What do you guys think? I think this is album/CD quality production. It's amazing your doing this at home. Sounds like a pricey studio imho. Well balanced and very aggressive. Did I mention it reminds me of Dimmu Borgir? But way better.

CAN YOU PUT IT ON SOUND CLOUD FOR THIS POST SO WE CAN STREAM IT?

Todd

Yes agreed it is really well done Ben + I don't cringe by these growling vocals which is rare. It has more of Paradise Lost vibes which I love. AWESOME! I want more!

Thanks, Kris! Yes, Paradise Lost is a good comparison and definitely a vibe of vocals I like too in this style!

Thats really good and seems you're not even breaking a sweat!

I think you might consider joining a band as a lead singer dude. You clearly have the vocal chops to do this kind of style. It sounds great. Also it doesn't look like it's ripping your throat apart which is a rare thing. Would you want to be a lead vocalist?

Sounds great Ben, please be sure to thoroughly warm up though, growling can easily do damage, I don't want you to think I'm patronising you buddy, it's easy to forget to warm up for vocal work though wink.gif

Yeah, I don't know anything about vocal, vocal training or technique, so it's something that's on my to-do list for sure. Thanks for reminding me! laugh.gif

You are off to a great start. You have a great knack for this style of vocal. Especially considering you have had zero training!! I think it's great that you have found a new talent and that you are so darn good at it. I look forward to hearing more!

Ben look into Zen of Screaming volume 2 for instructional on screaming and growling

I keep meaning to get some screaming under my belt but don't want to risk losing the top of my range etc.

I wonder how many bands have a singer who screams rather than a clean vocalist and screamer.

Growl 'attempts'? Too humble.

These attempts can easily go on a record.

Thanks, man!

I got a bit bored with playing around with my recording template, so I recorded a different few lines:

Dude you can growl with the best of them. Seriously. Have you thought about joining a band as a vocalist? A good growler is hard to find. Vocalists are always in short supply.

I have thought about it, but I'm not sure I could really do it. Generally I don't like performing music that much, it's more so the composing part I find fun.

Also, I bought a Reaper template from Drewsif (https://drewsif.bigcartel.com/product/reapertemplate) and tried putting my stems into it, and I think it sounds a lot better mix wise. I bought the template so I could get some tips and tricks, and I'm sure I'll learn a thing or two.

Here is a link directly to what came out of putting it into the template:

It's their loss to be sure. Your vocal work started good and has gotten even better. Super congrats on that. I like the template as well. Sounds like he is doing a mastering pass on the output bus which is always handy. Also spiff that it uses only free plugins. Goes to show, like he says, you just need a guitar, laptop, and audio interface and you can get pretty darn good results. Sure helps when the tracks are well played/sung!
