It's a multiply reflection of an original soundwave Matt. Like when you stand in a tunnel and shout 'Matt' you may hear after a while 'matt, matt, matt...'. (An echo is the original wave repeated after a short time delay; a reverb is the reflected wave and usually takes a longer time to sound then an echo.)

Every (large enough) space has a reverb characteristic and reverb can add a sense of space and depth to a sound. With modern convolution reverbs you can make yourself sound like you are playing in Madison Square Gardens/Wembley Arena/Sydney Opera House/your local pub toilet rather then your bedroom. With reverb you don't btw usually get a single reflected wave but multiples that start out simple but eventually form a complicated pattern. People often talk about the leading edge/front of the wave where the pattern is simple and the tail where it's complicated.

It can be a nice effect but if you put too many different reverbs in a single mix you'll end up with a bit of a mess. A lot of guitar amps have either a spring reverb or a digital reverb fitted and it can be good to add a bit of body and depth.

Hope that helps,

Cheers,
Tony

Big knobs and (tele)funkening ...

The Mackie Big Knob is a monitor control system

The Telefunken (or Neumann) U47 is a classic tube microphone.

And we are talking about them because we are interested in recording, not because they sound rude, oh no, definately not blink.gif
