Ever since i found out that Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Michael Angelo Batio (i think), Mike Portnoy, and John Myung studied here, i developed a great obsession to attend this college. It has been my dream, to earn a scholarship or financial aid to attend Berklee.

Ive been studying lately alot of theory and sight reading, which i think, its a requirement for application. Im on my last year at high school so that means that ill graduate very soon, 7 more months to be precise. I will be playing for almost a year in december 20th. Yeah i know, its nothing. But ive learned so much, that im even impressed and proud of myself. Techniques, speed, melody, theory, ive dedicated alot of my time to the guitar, and thats why my grades in school have suffered mildly, but im still keeping them steady.

So now, what i really want, is to earn a scholarship to Berklee. But what are the chances? how much time should i wait before applying? Personally (and not to be pesimistic), I highly doubt i can earn a scholarship just after I graduate from here. Why? because i think that by that time, i still wont have what they're looking for in a musician (more experience, etc). But who knows.

So here are my questions:

1. Do you think i can earn a scholarship by applying for one a few months after i graduate (June)? Do you think my playing will improve drastically by that time with alot of hard work, determination, and sacrifice?

If no is your answer (please state why). Then:

2. After how much time of hard work, practice, and studying do you think ill might be able to earn that scholarship?

Thanks for reading, and please be sincere in all aspects guys. Thank you. And Peace.

Ok here is what i think.

If you want it bad enough, if you want to TRULY succeed, to achieve this goal, you can do it. I truly believe this with every single atom in me. The human will is capable of extreme things. i believe that with hard work, dedication, and the desire, you can have it.

Its hard to say how much time of work and practice you'll need, no one progresses at the same rate, just practice as much as possible and work your ass off!! smile.gif

Well you want an honest answer right?Your odds of getting into Berkley are about under %5 if best and here's why.It takes so much to even get looked at in a place like that along with i saw a post on here earlier that stated you had to have 2 years of music trainning by a proffesional first before they would even consider you. Also you are in Central America and i believe your 16 which thats not a bad part.Dont get me wrong its possible but you would have to start today by never doing anything else in life ,no friends, girls, computer's anything just 100% 24 hour playing and learning the guitar.

What i would recommend ?Really put as much time as you can into learning the guitar, make it your only obsession and in the next 2-3 years try to get into a music school out in California or Florida that can still get you a good degree and isnt as hard to get into as say something like Harvard smile.gif Just remember you can do anything you want but saying you want something and really going for it are 2 different things.Good Luck

I wanted to go to Berklee, but chances of getting a scholarship are to small and paying is just way too much for me. I accepted that i won't graduate from Berklee and now i don't care as i see a good chance of becoming professional guitarist even without Berklee. All i need is a solo album of good, interesting and musical material. Some luck is sure needed also wink.gif

Don't get too obsessed with it - doesn't make you any good. Just keep practicing and playing.

Yeah, im still waiting for that album smile.gif

Anyway Fretdancer, it is true that the chances are low of getting in, BUT, there is no harm in trying, dont give up without trying, you might as well of not had the dream or desire in the first place. So try try try try try!!!! only settle for some thing else when YOU feel there is nothing left you have to offer to berkely.

I'm not gonna hurry with it even a bit because i want it to be great at least in my eyes - and that's hard to achieve. You know it's like - first impression counts. So if i hit the market with a crappy CD - i buried my name. if i hit the market with an interesting album, with top skills - than i have a chance of getting a contract and stuff....

TBH I think it's a hard question to answer without having a clear understanding and appreciation of you level of ability at the moment and without being able to estimate your likely level when you apply FretDancer.

Berklee has a highly competitive standard and I think you would require not only very good levels of guitar playing and theory but also an ability to demonstrate a broad and developed musical vocabulary and interest and commitment to being a musician. One person whom I think may be very well placed to answer your question is Muris as he was accepted albeit could not take up the place for personal reasons. Regardless if your dream is to go their then there is certainly no harm to my mind in putting in the effort and making the attempt.

Best of luck,
Cheers,
Tony

Thanks Uncreator, and yes i do want it bad enough, but im also aware of the difficulty. Only time will tell. One thing is for sure tho, i will never give up the guitar, i have come to a point were i just cant leave it, not only because ive improved alot, but because it has become part of my life and priorities.

Thanks for the post dan. What does "2 years of musical training by a professional" mean? like, do i have to have a teacher for 2 years or something like that?, btw im 17 tongue.gif biggrin.gif. Anyways, i understand your point, i might consider getting into another music school like you suggested.

Also, i think i read somewhere around their website and they say that they go to many places (including Latin America/Central America) in search of talened and determined people, although that doesent mean that im going to be chosen right away, someday they might come and maybe ill have enough skill and knowledge by then, who knows. Anyways, Thank you for your answer Dan.

Thanks for your answers tony. Ill put all my effort, in the end, if i get accepted or not. Im sure it will pay off.

---------------------------------------
To Muris: True, it is indeed not necessary to go to Berklee to become a great musician. But one thing that makes me want to go there so much, is the opportunity you get to be with people like you, with passion for music. Its like if i belonged there.

Anyways, tony mentioned that you got accepted. I wanted to ask, did you applied there or did they somehow "found" you and offered you an opportunity?

Thanks everyone for your honesty and comments.

Fret,

Something you may want to do is make a "project plan", for your goal(s). This is a good way to organize what it is that you need you to do in order to achieve your long term goals.

Consider your goal of going to Berkley. Then start to break down what it is you would need to do to reach that long term goal. Maybe make becoming an instructor at GMC a short term goal and a milestone for reaching your long term goal of a degree in music.

Just my 2 cents. smile.gif

Hey man. I really want to go to berklee myself. Being a shredder isn't necessary to get into berklee, look at someone like john mayer. He's certainly not a fast player, though he's not bad. It depends on what you plan to go there for.

My plan right now, because I'm in a similar boat to yours, is to go to another college for two years that has a very good music program (university of northern iowa). After then, I'll decide whether or not I want to transfer over to berklee.

Work very hard and you can do it smile.gif I know they have application centers all over the world, I think I read that there was one in mexico somewhere or brazil, those are the only two places south of the united states I can remember for tryouts. Remember that you have to do a improvisation session, so what I would brush up on is theory. Learn to improvise and learn to read music and all of that as a priority over playing really fast.

Sounds like a good idea, no-one has risen through the ranks yet - it's something I would like to see though, be a good bit of inspiration.

I have no advice on Berklee however Fretdancer, just keep practicing! cool.gif
