I've been a spotify user for a while and was wondernig how many actually know about it?

It's still in its BETA days so its quite new. but its a legal way for you to listen to practically any band. Some bands/record companys dont allow it such as metallica.

Its legal because every 3-4 songs it plays you a 30 second advert between the song, they make money from the advert then pay the record label.

http://www.spotify.com/en/

Its not legal in every country though. so i hope it is for you guys biggrin.gif

And with Premium, we pay about 10 bucks a month to get rid of the advert ^^

I've paid for it since day two. Great program, and I rarely use anything else unless I listen to a real CD in the stereo smile.gif

I've been using it for some time. Record lables sign the artists up but there has been some controversy lately since artists have came to notice they don't earn enough money from it so they back out, they want to sell records instead.
But so far I havn't seen one artist back this up in anyway. It's be interesting to know:
- How much less do they earn having the music on Spotify compared to not being there
- How many less records did they sell due to existing also on Spotify

To me it seems like a spur of the moment to back out. Possible the lable takes more money but I also smell some greed from the artists.

I don't know what the record companies earn and exactly how much the artists earn but to me this seem to be a danger to Spotify's success. If too many artists back out.

My next statement from the label is coming in 45 days. I'll try not to forget this topic and compare my previous sales to this new one with Sptofy included

I've been using Spotify for a while. I try to buy albums when I have the money but it is a great alternative to youtube when you want to hear something for free.

I'd imagine that Spotify have some form of broadcast license as it would be required by the various Broadcast legislations. (These do cover digital broadcast btw.) As such Spotify may well either have to provide a specific playlist or, more probably given their delivery vehicle, pay a blanket fee to the regional performance rights agency. It is up to a label to then be adequately registered to receive money from this blanket fee off of the PRA and to then distribute it to its artists on some form of pro-rata basis. This should be covered in the artist's contract.

As to whether you can quantify it with regard to exposure and marketing and increased/lost sales. No you can't directly but the assumption is that increased exposure will eventually lead to sales. That's why record labels have A&R wink.gif smile.gif ...

The issue that a few swedish artists have raised seems to be that 4 or 5 of the biggest labels initially was offered a fifth of the shares in Spotify very cheap (so cheap I could have bought them all myself).

So the companies got a big part of the shares and get insight in Spotify and a pretty big piece of the revenue(?) if there is any, and in return Spotify get the licenses and pay very little per played song.
I've heard the amount 1/10 öre per play. That is just about 1/1000 euro if I get it right. 1 öre = 1/100 SEK and 1 SEK is ~ 1/10 euro. I haven't seen this verified anywhere so don't take this as the truth.

I have no opinion on what should be paid per play. I'd guess that popular songs could generate quite a lot of plays and the price per play should be low, but the artist should get the bigger cut of that.

If Tony is right then the artist would get the regular compensation for being aired (the swedish organization that handles this would be STIM) + the per play compensation from Spotify.

To me this sums up to: as usual the labels take the money and the artist gets a little pat on the back.

As a listener I really like Spotify but imo artists should put pressure on their company to get a bigger cut out of their companys income. I'm not sure if a signed artist really can decide to leave Spotify, that's probably the labels decision? Besides, it would be like saying no to "free" money and exposure.
