GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Do You Experiment With Guitar Tones?

Last night, I've added a Fuzz pedal to my plexi marshall sound in my Fractal Ax8, and sudenly everything started to sound like Vai.
I think that the eternal sustain and my whammy bar helped. 
I was a bit blocked yesterday while jamming so I've decided to experiment a bit with my tone. Then, I couldn't stop playing! I went to sleep very late.
Do yo usually experiment with your guitar sound to bring some inspiration?

Sounds great Gab, your skills help a lot though 
I think what a lot of people do is use too much of the effect. There was a good series here on GMC that taught me a lot about getting an initial tone. I think when many people put a fuzz box on, they want to hear a lot of fuzz, which is ok if that's what you want but for tone shaping, just a hint can work wonders.
It can take a lot of precious time though.

Chasing tone is part of the craft and I enjoy the pursuit as much as the next person. But I can easily get lost in experimenting with tone and next thing I know, several hours have gone by. I have to frequently remind myself of the following: time spent perfecting tone is time spent not making music.

Yes - but I need to do it more. I want to get fast at finding a tone that fits a mix.

Some year's down the road when I will hopefully play half as good as you Gab - I will dedicate more time to tone 
Till then playing comes first. But I must admit great playing also needs perfect tone.

Its easier with analog, one dedicates more compared to a processor.
I enjoy trying out stuff as some has noticed but really don't buy or exchange often. Once my go-to tone (s) is set, the rest is just for fun.
Trying tones is just one part of the fun playing guitar, can be inspiring and educativein the process. Like everything in life, overdoing is never good.

And that's a skill set all of its own. Especially when recording at home, using headphones or your own monitors and then someone else listening like in REC where you said I need to dial out some low end, it sounded ok to me but that's part of the learning curve
It's good practise trying to get close to the tone of the lesson too, you learn quite a bit doing that.

Yeah, that's a good thinking. I like having a good basic tone and try effects and pedals over it, starting with subtle settings. It's true that it can take a lot of precious time, but if we dedicate a few minutes during our practice sessions to it, it will pay in the long term.
Till then playing comes first. But I must admit great playing also needs perfect tone.
