Awesome idea Cosmin!
I really enjoyed your video responses in our thread so far, sometimes a demonstration is better than 1.000 written words.

At the moment, I don't have a question though smile.gif

You have opened Pandora's Box laugh.gif

I've been working on shuffle rhythm and i got a few questions:

1) Should i practice it with a regular metronome or with a backingtrack with the drums in a shuffle feeling?
2) I have problems changing between straight and shuffle and vice versa. Should i practice with a metronome changing between both or is something that will come with time if i keep practicing shuffle (and straight of course).
3) What happens to shuffle when you increase speed? Is there a limit or is it possible to play with shuffle feeling even at 300bpm? ohmy.gif
4) What are your general impressions on the subject? biggrin.gif

Thanks

Great thread Cosmin and fast interesting response! I was thinking about the fastest swing/shuffle that I have heard and its probably been Jazz. I'll think of a question soon! Its very generous to offer a video response. cool.gif

Thanks man, that was really quick.

Its great to have an example of a song that changes between the two, now i'm listening to it trying to recognize the change (I'm going to become a Pantera fan after all! ).

At the end of the month i'll record my self playing the exercises of chapter 6, which has examples of both shuffle and straight.

Very cool thread and questions/responces! smile.gif

Who has the next question?

Posted by: Headbanger Aug 14 2013, 09:42 AM

Is there an effective use of echo/reverb other than making you sound like you're in a stadium or a large bathroom?

I often here people playing across the internet and their sounds are obviously enhanced by these effects and I never realise what it is until they stop playing and the echo is heard. I tend to never use anything that echoes distinctly after I stop. I play'flat/dead 'as I am always thinking that the echo will put me off and throw my concentration....If you can explain the usages of these effects as tools...for a layman like me...without saying its a matter of taste...I'd appreciate it. If this is a daft question laugh.gif , I won't be offended if you use words instead of wasting precious time on a video!!! tongue.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 15 2013, 07:19 AM

Hey buddy, I hope I got the question right smile.gif

It's not a matter of time, so don't worry - I found it far easier to talk about it then to write about it tongue.gif

Hey Cosmin....That was brilliant thanks. You answered from your perspective, something that for some reason often raises a question in my head. It was reassuring that you said what you did, as my mind often seeks more than what is probably actually there..(I hope you know what I mean.) You did well avoiding the ' it's a matter of taste' quote, when it is probably just a matter of taste..adding a bit of reverb/echo to the raw recording until you like the results.(It still puts me off a bit using any effects when practising...apart from gain and overdrive.)
I'll try and think of a better question next time... laugh.gif

Thanks again for your kind efforts in making this video response!!! You are a credit to GMC biggrin.gif

I may have a question biggrin.gif

How / when to use whole tone scale in solos. I mean if I'm playing for example solo in phygian dominant and I want to use this sound of whole tone scale (in the way as some modern metal guitarists do, like Jeff Loomis etc) should I change the key and then use this scale? Should the new backing track be composed in any specific way, like for example only using one note?

Is there any common way (some kind of well known standard) to do it? Im interested especially in modern metal environment.
Would be great if you could show some example. biggrin.gif

You are amazing Cosmin! smile.gif

Hey bro, gimme a minute to gather my ideas biggrin.gif I never used this, but I will try to figure it out laugh.gif

Posted by: sammetal92 Aug 15 2013, 11:36 AM

I wanna ask too, if its not much trouble biggrin.gif

You showed me how you think of melodies and you sing it and then play it on the guitar, that's good for solos! And really helped me out, thanks for that! cool.gif

But now, here's my problem: I have the melody (the lead part), I need to put some chords behind it. How would you approach this challenge?

If it can be answered in a written reply, by all means, do that! biggrin.gif If you're more comfortable recording a video, that's swell! biggrin.gif By any way you want, I'd appreciate if you can point me in the right direction as you did when you told me how to make up melody lines smile.gif

To Travis L Starr (FB comment) :
How do you work through a writers block and step outside of your comfort zone, to develop new material?

To Little Pinch harmonix (FB Comment) : How do you sing+play guitar at once (two different melodies)?

To KRu TKs (FB Comment) : How to create a better harmonic while playing solo?

Much thanks for the explanation! I never looked at the stress level being such a factor. Explains why I feel more prone to a clear thought process after I get a good workout at the gym, then take a nice relaxing drive home on a sunny day. It is almost like I have the radio on in my brain from the relaxed state that I am in.

Hey Cosmin, first post! I was wondering if you could help shed any light on mental tricks (or physical ones) to help break through the physical speed barrier.

Background:

I'm not a traditionally-trained guitarist. I started because I just wanted to play Metallica. It was either a guitar, or lessons, but not both (money), so I had the help of a friend teach me power chords, really basic stuff, and let me borrow his tab books. I didn't go through exercises, just learned and played what I wanted, and when I started writing my own stuff, it was ideas based on what other bands did, seeing patterns in the riffs they played, etc, and emulating that.

So, fast forward 17 years (I'm 32), and while I can play somewhat fast, I can't do it comfortably, or, easily, it seems. My right hand, when going fast, loves to tell the tendon in my forearm to tense up and lock me up. My forearm loves to get really involved in my right-hand technique. I watch videos of Alexi Laiho, Josh from Sylosis, all these great guitar players, and it's just effortless for only their right hand to move, all their speed and such coming from the wrist. I can't help but think, when I see the amount of guitar players that easily and swiftly pick their way through 8th-note lines (or 8th-note triplet lines) at 160 - 180bpm, that they know something I don't. I just can't help but feel I am missing out on some aspect of my right-hand technique that every one else seems to know (either mental or physical).

And I don't think I'm talking merely about practice, here; I practice every day, because my lack of ability in precisely this area demands it, but it's never enough. I seem to hit a barrier when I get to a particular pattern or rhythm at a particular speed, and it's as if my brain knows I can play it, but it doesn't transfer to my right hand/wrist.

I am currently working through two series, the "Hand Synchronization" series and the "Right Hand Basics" series to address just this issue. I apologize for the broad and multi-faceted question; I'm unsure of how to ask what I'm asking. What do you and other fast players *think* about when you play? Or is it more of a "in the zone" feeling, where you're just completely stateless, mindless, and everything comes together?

Thanks in advance for any advice you would be able to impart on me. smile.gif Thanks for all your other lessons, too!

Hey T-man, glad I could help out smile.gif The empty mind can work wonders - this is how I feel after a sword practicing session, at this point that's the easiest for me to empty the mind. It's me and the opponent - if the mind is not empty and if you are not fully in the present, you might end up dead - theoretically dead, you know what I mean, but I like to think things in terms of a real combat situation, where every move can determine the outcome of the match.

Hey mate, here we go:

and

Cosmin,

Thanks so much for your insight and for linking Darius' video. I can see the motion he goes through when picking at different speeds, and I admire and am a little jealous of his ability to NOT move his forearm! This is how I want to play, exactly; and I'm sure it's bad habits I picked up from just learning on my own how to pick (I first started by emulating James Hetfield, with nothing but downstrokes - Master of Puppets is hard because of that).

If you're a night owl like me, I can put up a video of my playing (with a specific riff that causes me headache with this issue) in a couple hours - I'd have to put together my audio recording with my video since I just play through GarageBand and record that way.

Maybe Darius' video will help me out in the interim and I'll even blow myself away smile.gif

Thanks again!!

Posted by: kinsbane Aug 22 2013, 03:49 AM

Hey Cosmin,

Here's a take I did using a riff from one of my band's songs, Cleanse. This riff has always challenged me, because of a lot of switching between palm mutes on the 6th string and un-muted notes on the 5th string, and it changes really fast.

You can tell when I play without any palm muting that I hiccup a couple times - this is pretty much my barrier right here, and I always feel my forearm lockup when playing this.

I'm playing an ESP explorer w/EMG-81s, 11-54 strings in drop C, through my Digitech RP500 into Garageband. The audio track is straight from GB, I recorded the video with my tablet.

Let the humbling commence!!

Edit: I just realized that my position in relation to the camera isn't optimal, but I can already see how much movement I have in my right arm / wrist / forearm. So, definitely something to consider.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 22 2013, 08:51 AM

Let me introduce myself, I am a complete self taught musician who has been playing for about 5 Years and my favorite Musical Style is Rock-Metal and I love to listen to Steve Vai, Jason Becker etc. I dearly want to play their songs, and I could actually make it, but I don't know how to improve my guitar playing even farther to get to that point. I actually do have that discipline, but I dont know in which direction I should go. The Lessons I play here are 6 and over (till about 8) but I want to reach that 10 sometime. And another one here: If you met your favorite guitarist of all time, what would you ask him? Something like "go on tour with me! =D or what? "

Howdy Steve! Here we go!

Hey man! Glad I could help out, but could you set the video so that we may see it? At this point, it is set on 'Private'

Thank you!

Hey Cosmin,

I'm in the process of making a live set, as I will probably have a gig on the 6th Sept. I have an hour and 15 minutes set, and so far, all my material combined is about 50 minutes in total. What would you do in this case? Would you leave it at 50 minutes, or would you 'thicken' up the set so it is it's full time? I'm not sure how to go about this, it's my first gig and any tips would be appreciated. smile.gif Thanks man

Hey man - one thing spotted - notice how much your thumb is moving? That's one thing you need to get rid of. Practice this riff slowly with a metronome and focusing on picking by using your wrist, like in Darius' video. When you feel ready - post the recording here or in the Practice room for us all to see! smile.gif

Ear training, or well, just learning something by ear, especially faster passages. How? I'm struggling (but in the end figuring it out) with say... the notes from the "The League of Extraordinary..." after the "intro". Any tips to approaching this? I'm caught a bit in between really listening to it, trying to play it, trying to sing it, trying to play along to it etc., but the process seems very slow at the moment!

Hey Ben - well, you are doing everything in the correct order - especially the singing is important and it will help you in remembering any piece until you can also play it - no shortcuts here mate smile.gif There is one tho, so check out the little movie below:

Whilst practicing my hybrid picking I overcame my biggest stumbling block in making it work.

When I Alt pick I approach the string with my pick at an angle (like a lot of people do) and I've found the position of the thumb and index finger gets in the way of the middle finger when trying to hybrid picking, so I approached the string with my pick flat to it and this position makes things work!

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this question, but I don't know who else to ask, so I figured it would be worth a shot. My amp has a built in tuner, so I was going to tune my guitar about an hour ago and it wouldn't play through my amp. After looking at it a little, I realized that I screwed up the input jack on my guitar somehow. Is there an easy way to fix that? Because with Christmas and the fact that I'm a kid without a job means I'm a bit short on money. If I could fix that myself could you try to explain how, or will I just be better of taking it to a shop when I get some money? If the latter, feel free to just say so.

You should better take your guitar to luthier, if u don't have experience with repairing parts.Or if u have someone in the family with wire-ing tool, ask him to help you. I don't think it can be that expensive, i pay around 1 $ here for repairing , wire-ing cables and stuff smile.gif

If you don't have money, I think that this would be easily fixed by a guy with some experience (technician, electronic engineer). By the way, the reparation cost should be very big.

Feel free to ask your questions here, or start new thread at Practice room or Chill Out sub-boards every time you need to ask or share something. wink.gif

Hi Cosmin,

How's it going?

I have a quick question in regards to pickups and my PRS SE guitar. I noticed you have a PRS SE and I was wondering if you have had a similar issue.

I have a PRS SE 24TH Anniversary Custom 24 and I love the feel an sound of it, but the stock pickups (SE HFS Treble Humbucker and SE Vintage Bass Humbucker) are too weak for metal. However, I love the tonal characteristics I get from playing this guitar like the articulation from the chords. I would like to retain the tonal characteristics I get from the current setup, but upgrade to pickups with a stronger signal for metal style music. I was wondering if I should upgrade to a higher quality brand of PRS pickup? Or if I choose another brand, like Bare Knuckle, would I sacrifice the PRS tonal characteristics for a stronger signal?

Thanks man.

OK. I have one. How do we build arpeggiated chord progressions, using one (or more open strings) and, having just a few hand changing shapes and actually moving that certain shape around the neck ? (Think Scorpions - Still Loving You)
Then, building a vocal melody over that pattern. And singing it over tongue.gif Now that might not be a tough job for some, or maybe !
I always loved arpeggiated chord progressions, but never get to making a real progression or something due to my extremely limited chord knowledge.

Hey mate smile.gif Tough because there's a lot to tell and you need a lot of background covered smile.gif I tried to shoot as easy as possible and not lose you along the way. Hope it makes sense:

Give it 5 minutes to load smile.gif

The thing is, there's no shortcut here.. you need to understand theory in order to build these things smile.gif It's not like a magic formula or something, but you should take time to understand this amazing language that music is. You will then be able to write, play and sing without any problem whatsoever wink.gif

Hey, Cosmin-mate!

Wonder if you can help me out? Im 99% done with your Pirate Metal lesson! That's taught me so much, with helping with my alternate picking, string skipping (00:16 to 00:29 nearly killed me, but i got there!) and left/right hand co-ordination.

Would you mind going though a little theory in that lesson? How you came up with the melody, how it all fits together? That would seriously help me out. One thing i find hard is understanding what is going on under the hood.

PS - please can we have Pirate Metal II or something as speedy and melodic? :-)

Thanks in advance bro.

Thanks SO much for taking time in helping me out - i know what i need to work on next now: how the modes are structured and related and how to apply them.

Anyway, time to warm up those tubes and get practicing!

Hey Cosmin, i've got this clean part that I wrote for a song, but I don't think its possible to play the way I had it in mind. Could you take a look? I guess in some parts it isn't possible to sustain the bass note.

I normally just use a midi acoustic for my clean parts, since I write them in guitar pro and it normally sounds better than me trying. laugh.gif

https://soundcloud.com/socky42/8dio-steel-guitar-plugin
2nd part of the guitar pro file, I can play the first 8 bars easily. The other chord changes just seem too fast for me to sustain and still get in position for the next chord.

If it doesnt change on its own, bar 26 onwards is 155BPM

Hey matey! Nothing to it -> Precisely - some of the things that you have written in there can't be played without fingerpicking or hybrid picking smile.gif I for one use hybrid picking a lot because I tend to write stuff which cannot be played with just normal picking, simply because of the reason you mentioned: some notes need to be played simultaneously.

I am very curious to see this piece played so please, keep me updated smile.gif Maybe you would also like to work on developing your fingerpicking/ hybrid picking together? Let me know smile.gif

Yes biggrin.gif

In Gabriels latest Lesson (bfmv style) I'm wondering how to achieve this tight and fast downstroke picking (like in the first seconds of the video). I can play it at 140bpm, but when speeding up it gets sloppy - just because changing from picking palm muted to unmuted (where I'm slightly releasing my palm) just takes "too long".. what's the trick?

Hey mate smile.gif Lemme analyze things a bit, although I think I already know what the answer is smile.gif Stay tuned wink.gif

Thanks mate! Didn't saw this, because I didn't get notified as usual by email ?!
But finally that's what I'm doing - I was able to increase speed for the intro-riff by 20bpm smile.gif

Well, it's good you got to see the vid and even better that you incorporated the technique with success! Good going matey! When can we expect a REC take then? biggrin.gif

Cosmin could you do a quick vid on Rhythmic delay Even when I have a dotted 8th note setting which I presume a lot of Rhythmic delay stuff uses, I struggle to get the effect I'm looking for, I think it might be down to over playing and not enough repeats, but settings and playing examples would really help

The sort of thing that's on this at 6 mins

Hello Cosmin, great idea.
I feel important by having my question answered in a video tongue.gif .

So, my question is:
There is an effective way to get better at horizontal soloing?
I fell like im really used to play fast scales vertically, but it's a bit tricky to play it horizontaly.
Any tips other than practicing with a metronome?

Thanks!

Thank you man, ill try that one string aproach on my studies.
Maybe this will help my solos to sound a bit different and get another aproach, instead of up and down scales as i do sometimes.

Knowing the notes of the scale you are using and then understanding their effect when being played over various chords is usually the recipe for success - let me know how it goes mate wink.gif

Hi Cosmin, I have 2 questions for you!

1) Being a beginner guitarist (4 years or so), my goal is to be able to improvise rhythm and solos. I know a few moveable chord shapes, but I can never figure out which chords go well together. I end up just playing 3 power chords or something boring over and over. (2 styles I like to play are jazzy/fusion, and metal) How do I go about making something good sounding with all these major and minor chords I know up and down the neck? Is there a formula on how to combine them, or something I can practice to be able to improvise interesting sounding rhythm parts on the fly using chords?

2) When it comes to soloing, I am familiar with the pentatonic scale positions and how the modes are formed from them. My problem is, I am only comfortable playing in one or 2 of the positions, and I get stuck just going up and down the same pentatonic positions which leads to all my solos sounding the same. What can I practice (in a fun way) to break out of this, and to be able to improvise different sounding melodies and solos using my knowledge of the major/minor pentatonic scale?

I know that these questions are a little broad and you could probably go on forever about them, but I have hit a wall with my playing and hopefully you can shed some light to get me moving on the right track again! Thanks!

- Ian
