GMC Forum _ Todd Simpson _ Extremes Of Playing And Technique

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 31 2010, 06:46 AM

In this post, I do a quick demo of shredding using one hand. Essentially playing a shred lick and then using the left hand as a mute and playing the same thing "legato" using only the left hand.

This is an example of finger strength and speed that is more of a demo than anything else. It's not really about musicality so much as a demonstration of what's possible with enough practice and hand work. You can theoretically play anything you want using only one hand if your left hand is strong enough. And you can easily build up that hand strength through some simple drills and patterns.

Join me Saturday in the Video Chat Room at 2:00 PM E.S.T. for more on this and other techniques.

I NEVER got time on saturdays -.-

Good Stuff Todd. I really enjoyed last Saturdays lesson. I have been playing the lick (not the riff) that you covered over and over and have developed some speed that has me excited about my alternate picking again.

I guess I should go and look for the tabs so I can remember the riff and put it all together now.

This is a really cool thing you have going and I hope that you have the time to continue it far into the future. I am impressed with the quality of the material that you cover and the time that you take to make it fun and enjoyable. Looking forward to this Saturdays Lesson!

I Hear ya. I'm sorry though as I'd love to have you participate in our Saturday Jam. I moved it to an earlier time but some folks just can't make it on saturday. I have thought about having alternate lesson days on Sundays depending on how many people it would benefit. Would you be up for Sunday clinic?

BTW: Either way, do check out the new collab I'm working that is mentioned above this reply, as I'd really like to have you play on it. It's called GEIST in honor of my many German students.

I've uploaded the backing track for PROJECT 21! I can't wait to hear what you guys come up with! Here is a link to the post.

Rip it, Rock it, go nuts!

TIP: The Minor and Harmonic Minor Scale work well here. Also, it works to shift the position of the scale to match the key change so D minor, then A minor, then E minor.

But feel free to use anything or any scale you feel!

I downloaded the track and started to play over it and I am having a big problem with the guitar parts that are already in there... If I just concentrate on the drums and bass and ignore the guitar shredding thats already going on in the track I can come up with some things. But it always sounds like a big mass of confusion with the other guitar tracks in the backing.... Maybe if it just had the riff in there without the fast lick part then there would be more room for my guitar part..... Maybe you can show me where I am going wrong on Saturday.

I hear ya! I'm actually having a similar issue, I have to play with the shred lick almost note for note when soloing over it or it turns to mush. I"ll record a pass WITHOUT the fast lick and use that as a melody bit in the chorus.

If I can get enough folks, I"ll either switch to Sunday or add another lesson on Sunday. Sunday is fine with me smile.gif

I downloade...

I hear ya, I put up the new version for this very reason. It's just too busy to solo over. It's fun to play but will work better as a chorus chunk than something to solo over. Looking forward to takes off the new track @
