I think DeGroot has a scalloped strat, it sounded quite awesome. Ive never played one but I'd love to try it. I always have a look for one when Im in a guitar shop so I can have a cheeky wee shot smile.gif
Todd, you should scallop the neck on one of your ibby's cool.gif I was watching a video where Rob Chapman got a ESP LTD TE202 scalloped, it sounded most badass..... although he also put a bareknuckle mule in it.

I too want a strat cool.gif Something that is plain and simple, with modern electronics and tuners and a nice bridge that stays in tune, but a bit of old tone. I am really digging blues stuff right now smile.gif Maybe I'll someday get a strat with an Ash body, maple neck, maple fingerboard, 3 single coils that can go from sparkling cleans (like METALLICA) to blues (Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page) to Metal (Iron Maiden), and something that's very much playable with a thinnish neck. smile.gif

I'd love to scallop a green gunslinger with a maple neck and put a Bareknuckle JUGGS in it!! Or a HOME WRECKER smile.gif That would RAWWWWWK!!!

This one is just a simple strat knock off I think. I don't believe it's real. Or it would be far more pricey smile.gif

Strats are not my bag but I've always wanted to try a scalloped neck smile.gif Yngwie sure gets a lot of use out of them smile.gif Some folks hate them!! I'm very curious to try.

Go to Guitar Center biggrin.gif I always wonder how does it feel like playing a nice guitar with bigger frets, let alone a scalloped neck. Can't wait for my Jackson biggrin.gif

I also read using bass guitar frets is a good alternative to scalloping, but there are also online tutorials where users do this mod. with home tools. Most important is not to scallop too deep, thats the mistake most made.

To me the closest feel would be a 0.10 string ibanez neck as fingers almost never touch the fretboard, but its not really that close.

Hard thing about scalloped is the fingertips must meet the strings as perfect as possible, the area gets really narrow with scalloped necks and there isn't enough room to correct the pressure needed (so its actually harder to play but very good practice guitar) .

Trick is though left hand touch must be very delicate, almost as if using the weight of the finger rather than muscle. So the guitar must be setuped accordingly.

I played a few but always felt like I had to own one to truly get used to it, sort of like the first 7 string experience. What I felt was though if I got used to it then I'd have to always use scalloped guitars smile.gif probably thats why there are so many haters, it feels very different and needs a discipline to adjust.

I have the YJM strat and I love it. It is a nice alternative in sound and playing from the other guitars I have. It is great for bends and vibrato.

The one in your picture isn't a American YJM signature. They come with the 70's head stock and in vintage white (most common), red, and sonic blue. I know a lot of the korean or Japan made knock off strats can really be iffy with quality. The cheapest I've seen the signatures go is around $1000 used. If I had the cash I would get another. cool.gif

My friend had a custom scallop and paint job done on a the same green gunslinger. Here are some pictures of the result. Came out damn cool!

Common myths regarding 'scalloped' fret boards.

1) They will not make you play faster. If anything your technical limitations will be magnified. Yngwie and McLaughlin like them because they magnify those two guys terrifying technique and super clean articulation.
2) There are no such thing as 'bass' frets. 6100 wire is about the thickest you can get and plenty of guitar players use it.
*The fatter your fret wire, the more difficult intonation is up the fretboard, especially with chords. Even with the tallest/fattest frets you'll still be touching wood on most frets other than the 1st fret and maybe past the 17th depending on how light your strings are.

I've played a couple of scalloped neck guitars. The most noticeable thing for me was that they seemed brighter tonally than their non-scalloped counterparts and I also felt my callouses more without the support of the wood under the finger tip (I assume this would go away as you get used to it. As I'm not a shredder per se I really didn't notice anything as a plus or minus technique wise for me. It felt different but neither better nor worse. I did like the ability to get to a note at the end of a run, hit it sharp and relax it into pitch. Similar to dipping the bar at the end of a phrase and bringing it back up to pitch. I had to pay a little more attention to intonation with chords. Between frets 3 and 12 is where the feel difference was the most pronounced. It was pretty natural to 'feel' how much pressure to apply to get the note right (intonation wise). Again, string gauge is a factor here. The one's I've played had .010s or .011s on them.

Mr Dahl has a strat with a scalloped neck I believe. smile.gif I tried an Ernie Ball with a scalloped neck once at a store in Anchorage and I absolutely loved it. I should have bought that sucker. dry.gif That being said, I have always wanted to get my hands on a nice Fender Strat. Every one that I have played just felt great in my hands and I love the tones they produce. I am always on the lookout for a cheaper mexi strat that I can take some files to and scallop the fretboard as an experiment. smile.gif The closest thing that I own to a scallop is the Warmoth neck on my old Kramer. The frets are just HUGE! I don't think I have seen another guitar with frets that fat. No idea what size they are but you do have to play pretty light on it or you risk going sharp.
I don't think a scalloped fretboard automatically makes you able to play faster but it certainly doesn't hurt because it forces you to fret lightly, and as most of us know, a light touch is conducive to playing fast. And as for bends and vibrato, there is less effort and resistance since your fingertips never touch the wood. I think an argument could be made that a scalloped fretboard will actually help train you to play with improved technique in regards to speed , stamina and maybe even expressiveness.
In the end I would love to own a couple of high end Strats, one scalloped and one standard fretboard. smile.gif

Well I won't stop you Todd, my scalloped American deluxe stat is certainly the best guitar I have ever owned or played ( Btw I have never tested high end guitars like Suhr or Fender select etc). The neck profile and bright swamp-ash-meets-maple sound is just amazing for that funky pentatonic screaming lead stuff.

Although scalloping obviously won't make our fingers work faster, it definitely helps me give faster runs more articulation, and thereby increasing the perceived impression of speed. So if you ask me it does help your playing sound faster, especially for three-note-per-string legato people. Here are some more of my thoughts about scalloping.

In the spirit of AK, I would recommend you to try out second hand mexican and even Chinese fender strat in a big guitar store (which you guys are fortunate to have!). If you find a good copy they are insane value for money. Then you can try to scallop yourself (go extremely slow, and preferably practice on a no-value guitar the first time). If you do a good job you can probably sell the guitar with profit (but then why on earth would you sell it..!? wink.gif )

As usual, strats with their plastic pick guard are super easy to mod any way you want. So you could take such a project anywhere you want.

Looks like Yngwie models (pre-1998) have the same headstock as shown in your picture. It could be an early production Yngwie strat? I've personally never have seen one like it. I'm guessing they are somewhat rare.

Here is a pic of a 1989 yjm model. Attached Image

That RED one I posted is from ebay and IT MAY BE A FAKE!~!! smile.gif Some folks are saying bits on the lettering are ALL WRONG so I'm gonna back off. I'm probably gonna try to do the old gear of death game and see if I can trade in, out, up and consolidate some gear for a nice scalloped guitar.

I'd REALLY like an IBBY 7621 scallopped to be honest, or any RG5x scallopped by in my heart of hearts I want.......

RG565 Maple Neck, Scallopped.
I know that's a bit niche, but that's what I really want smile.gif Probably have to buy one and have it scallopped which is like risking ruining the mona lisa for an IBBY fan as those guitars are rare as Hens teeth.

It's an addiction!! I just can't help myself!! Anytime I find an IBBY with Series 1 WIZARD neck I just go INSANE. Those necks are getting so freaking rare to find in decent shape that I just gotta go for it each time smile.gif I mean, I LOVE the way the FLAME MAPLE Neck through body RGT42 looks and plays, but it's a WIZARD II neck, which is slightly thicker and slightly more radiused and just doesn't feel entirely right. I'm SPOILED by the brilliance of the Original Wizard Neck!! Putting the RGT42 on the auction ebay block Today! It's a

steal @ $485!
