I have a craving for a scalloped yngwie strat for some odd reason and I've got my eye on this one! It's probably a fake, but close enough
 Anyone tried these? or similar?

I was watching a video where Rob Chapman got a ESP LTD TE202 scalloped, it sounded most badass..... although he also put a bareknuckle mule in it.

Common myths regarding 'scalloped' fret boards.
1) They will not make you play faster. If anything your technical limitations will be magnified. Yngwie and McLaughlin like them because they magnify those two guys terrifying technique and super clean articulation. 2) There are no such thing as 'bass' frets. 6100 wire is about the thickest you can get and plenty of guitar players use it. *The fatter your fret wire, the more difficult intonation is up the fretboard, especially with chords. Even with the tallest/fattest frets you'll still be touching wood on most frets other than the 1st fret and maybe past the 17th depending on how light your strings are. I've played a couple of scalloped neck guitars. The most noticeable thing for me was that they seemed brighter tonally than their non-scalloped counterparts and I also felt my callouses more without the support of the wood under the finger tip (I assume this would go away as you get used to it. As I'm not a shredder per se I really didn't notice anything as a plus or minus technique wise for me. It felt different but neither better nor worse. I did like the ability to get to a note at the end of a run, hit it sharp and relax it into pitch. Similar to dipping the bar at the end of a phrase and bringing it back up to pitch. I had to pay a little more attention to intonation with chords. Between frets 3 and 12 is where the feel difference was the most pronounced. It was pretty natural to 'feel' how much pressure to apply to get the note right (intonation wise). Again, string gauge is a factor here. The one's I've played had .010s or .011s on them. That being said, I have always wanted to get my hands on a nice Fender Strat. Every one that I have played just felt great in my hands and I love the tones they produce. I am always on the lookout for a cheaper mexi strat that I can take some files to and scallop the fretboard as an experiment. |

Well I won't stop you Todd, my scalloped American deluxe stat is certainly the best guitar I have ever owned or played ( Btw I have never tested high end guitars like Suhr or Fender select etc). The neck profile and bright swamp-ash-meets-maple sound is just amazing for that funky pentatonic screaming lead stuff.
Although scalloping obviously won't make our fingers work faster, it definitely helps me give faster runs more articulation, and thereby increasing the perceived impression of speed. So if you ask me it does help your playing sound faster, especially for three-note-per-string legato people. Here are some more of my thoughts about scalloping. In the spirit of AK, I would recommend you to try out second hand mexican and even Chinese fender strat in a big guitar store (which you guys are fortunate to have!). If you find a good copy they are insane value for money. Then you can try to scallop yourself (go extremely slow, and preferably practice on a no-value guitar the first time). If you do a good job you can probably sell the guitar with profit (but then why on earth would you sell it..!?  )As usual, strats with their plastic pick guard are super easy to mod any way you want.
