I have many favorite exercises that I use to play every time I pick up my guitar. I've learnt some of them from a guitar teacher that I had when I was around 15 years old. He taught me how to play shred and neoclassical, and I remember the first class when he shared with me 10 short repetitive exercises that I still practice for endurance and warming up.

This is one of them:

I have an exercise which sometimes I make it. To be honest it's not my favorite but who say that you must play only things that you like wink.gif
But it's kind of fun exercise and it's the way to force myself to use my pinky finger biggrin.gif When all the notes are played perfect equal it sound really nice.

Two of my favorite alternate picking exercises were transformed into GMC lessons smile.gif Here they are:

Who tried them so far and found them useful?

I said about an exercise not related with GMC.

But, if we talk about GMC and alternate picking........... I can say that I study a lesson with Darek wich, trust me will remain FOREVER my first thing that I will play when I will pick up my guitar. It's the best warm up that I could ever make and it's unbelievable how a lesson (of course, made with the most tiny details) can make miracles for my playing. You will see it soon in Rec wink.gif
I really recomand all alternate picking lessons from GMC for practice routine.

This is the lesson I'm talking about smile.gif

That's a great exercise for fingers independence. Thanks for sharing Monica. Favorite in this case, doesn't mean, that you like it, it means that you keep on practicing it. biggrin.gif

I pretty much think that all of Muris' technical oriented lessons are GREAT exercises in their own right. The great thing behind them, is that you don't really need to take them to full speed if you can't, even at 75% they are able to help you improve your technique wink.gif

What's your favorite Muris lesson, guys?

definitely this one:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...ernate-workout/

this was actually the reason I joined GMC years ago...

I don´t do this exercise very often now but when I joined it opened my eyes of how bad I was at alternate picking... it really made me start practice again after a few years......

Preferably start with scales. Chromatic, Am, blues / country scale. No definite system. Saw the recommendations. I will pick up something else.

I would like to play freely in a variety of styles (blues, country, rock, heavy, jazz .. and many others.) Be able to accurately translate my mood at the guitar sound.

This sounds very good. You've already have very defined goals. I was wondering if you use to design weekly guitar routines to achieve those goals.

I would like specific advice from instructors. How better: to learn by 70-80% one style, then go to the next or simultaneously study 3-4 style?

I would make sure that I have all the basics down:

- theory - major scales and its modes, chords, intervals, the minor and major pentatonic scales
- basic techniques - alternate picking, legato, articulation (bending, vibrato)
- rhythm - rhythmic subdivisions and various rhythmic formulas
- chords - strumming and arpeggiating

These are in very broad terms, things that you have to have a good hang on in order to make sure you will have a more productive ride while studying various styles as ANY style has the building bricks described above.

It is of course possible to study various styles in parallel, but always being aware not to get carried away and not finish the things you start.

I'm with Cosmin about this. The basic theory is important and will be useful for any style. I recommend you to check our theory board clicking HERE.

Regarding studying many styles, this depends on anybody and the capacity of focusing on different things. Personally I wouldn't work on more than 2 styles at the same time to be able to see improvements quickly. Some styles can take many years to be mastered, so the important thing is to keep motivated and working.

Exactly - when I was young, I prepared a daily practice schedule of 8 hours filled, no not filled, CRAMMED with stuff. I ended up practicing 3 hours and feeling a bit lost simply because of the sheer amount of information I was desperately trying to assimilate - darn.. I needed to thin things down in order to really learn. It took me some time to understand this tho smile.gif

See how well you can focus and draw a line after 1 month of practice seeing how much and how well you got things smile.gif You will be able to figure out things better then wink.gif
