Does anyone sell things on Ebay and are shocked at the charges from it. Recently I was selling a guitar for £300. If it sold the overall money I would get was £240. That was £50 to ebay and £10 to Paypal.

Has ebay always charged a lot for selling things or is it starting to get worse.I know that it takes more or less money off depending on the type of auction.I think that I am just going to sell things privately from now on.

Ebay has started getting much worse for the seller, in terms of charges and who they side with in a dispute.

I've read lots of posts over at The Gear Page that would put me off selling on Ebay.

You have 10 % fee on auction price and 10 % on shipping price.
You paid that much because you shipped to some distant country with expesive shipping option.

I have never sell with Ebay so I don't know about charges, but is sounds reasonable. You should consider these charges before setting the price of what you will sell....

There was no shipping on the auction it was pickup only



Hi Gabriel

I sold a guitar for £600 two year ago and it only charged me £30.Then I try sell a guitar for £300 and it charges me £50.I think the prices are just going up I did not realise how bad it was getting.

In the end I sold the guitar by advertising it on ebay and someone suggested doing it outside ebay in which I was happy.Sold the guitar for £290



Yeah I had my first dispute a couple of months ago in which ebay refunded the person then I had to refund ebay or it would go to court or debt collectors

There are many fee classifications/options with ebay.

If you sell with a 'buy it now' option your fees are usually less.

I think that it's good to take care of buyers, if not, the business ends... It says 10%. There must be something wrong in your transaction...

I also think it is good to take care of the buyers. I would expect that if I bought something and had not received it

The problem on ebay in my opinion is there are lots of time wasters and scammers.I have being asked for my bank details so that they can make the payment.Obviously I would not do that.I have also heard stories where the seller has sent the item recorded delivery which has to be signed for from the person at that given address.The item has been signed for and the seller gets a case opened against them because the buyer did not receive the item.

Then there are the time wasters where they buy a item and dont pay and the seller still gets ebay charges and have to contact ebay to remove charges.

Plan on 25% fees on Ebay once you add listing fee, selling fee, paypal fees, etc.


It's gotten pretty bad. You have to plan on that much being sucked out in fees and price accordingly. Which makes is pretty hard to make any money. It's mostly just trying to get more than a music store would give.

yeah, this is the bad side. In my case, I have issues with some items that didn't arrive and the sellers refund me the money without problem. I had all good experiences by now.

Thats about all you can hope for on ebay typically. Of course now and then you can make a good amount if you time it right. It speeds up around xmas and slows down in the summer.
