Hmm, that thought have struck me too. I dont think guitarists ever stop practicing actually. Theres ALWAYS something new to learn or get better at smile.gif

Edit: Its probably the same with most musical instruments, dunno.

I don't think anyone can ever be fully satisfied and will allways want to improve doing the thing they love, wether it's guitar, or piano, or a sport, or a job, If you love it you will allways want to improve, that's my opinion anyways.

No I don't think we are ever satisfied. Like Robin said there is always something to improve on and learn. I know I'll never know or perfect it all....not even close. For me aswell my musical tastes have changed since playing guitar so my hunger for musical knowledge in general is never full.

Very interesting question. Obviously there is always something new to learn. But i read in a recent guitar mag that my guitar hero paul gilbert now wants to spend more time giving back to younger guitarist through more teaching at G.I.T. So i think alot of guitarist who have "made it" probably look for other things to do with there skills and knowledge! smile.gif

But in answer to your question, I think guitar is a life long learning thing for sure!

i guess never being satisfied is a positive thing, i know it drives me to learn. i just wish i started playing more seriously a few years as now days it always feels time is against me lol. strangely, i never wanted tp play guitar... it was hearing a saxaphone that got me into music.. but i could never afford one so i got a guitar.. now im totally in love with guitar and anything that can squeel and scream (i mean that in the cleanest way possible lol) but it just makes me feel all warm inside. but i did go a bit instrument mad, after buying 5 guitars, a piano, a keyboard, steel pan,3amps and a banjo (dont ask..it was cheap) im still not satisfeid.. there is always so much more i want to learn and play..i did have to stop myself from buying a drum kit tho!
Its great to know your opinions smile.gif x

That depends on a person! Some are satisfied with only power chords! but if you are a shredder type of guitar player than you'll never be satisfied with how you play because you'll always want to get better!

i know i am not satisfied with my playing....some say i am crazy....but i just want to get better and better biggrin.gif

I used to get really wound up on this, but if you really want to be a versatile musician, there is so much to learn, so satisfaction never really last that long for me.

There are some things now that will take me a year to get and use in my playing, and once you get to a certain stage things dont come quickly anymore. You really have to work on them.

I guess it comes down to patience. Very rarely am i satisfied with my playing, but when i am, its that much sweeter.

Just some thoughts.

-Ben

Wow, that is a little mad (especially the piano!) - but then I bought 5 gitars in the last year so who am I to criticize smile.gif

Here is my view. There are 2 stages for everyone.

1. I'm a beginner
2. I'm intermnediate

No-one wants to say they are good or advanced, even Pavel regards himself as intermediate smile.gif So Intermediate covers everything from not a beginner to RustyCooley/Steve Vai/Insert your guitar hero here.

Apart from revealing the fact that its hard to be objective about your own skill level, I think this proves that the huge majority of guitarists are always looking to take the next step. As soon as you decide you are good enough, you might as well put the guitar away forever because you won't improve, and you will probably lose ground. I think "I am good enough" is another way of saying "I'm not interested anymore".

So what do I think my level is? Intermediate ... (but a lower Intermediate than Pavel laugh.gif )

Sounds like you are asking about two things. One being satisfied with your material possession, in this case your guitars. In the other being satisfied with your personal abilities.

In answer to the first, I am satisfied with my guitars. They are nice. There are other guitars out there, but I do not crave them, I am happy with what I have, and feel they are quite adequate for the job at hand.

In answer to the second, there are two aspects of that. Of course you are not satisfied with your skill level. Why would anyone ever be? But then there is the aspect of self esteem, that is, being satisfied with yourself, and feeling you are as good as anybody else out there. Which is how all of us should feel. We all have the one possession that means anything, life. Everything else does not mean a rat's ass in comparison. That is why a bum on the street is equal to the Queen of England, no significant difference, they both have life, and everything else means nothing in comparison.

I personally will never be satisfied with my skill level. I'll always try learning new tecniques and refining old ones. I'll probably never be satisfied with the number of guitars I own either ( until I'm rich and famous) tongue.gif

Personally Im pretty satisfied with the techniques on my arsenal. Maybe for the moment anyway. For the music I play, I dont need any special things for it. When I have only a few things to focus on, the more I get them to work for me. Maybe in the near future, I will start working on other things but I am satisfied at the moment.

Now if you are asking if Im ever satisfied with one equipment, the answer is H* No. Im never satisfied with the stuff that I have. I always want a new guitar, amp, even pedals.

As with fkalich - breaking it in to two parts:

Instruments and gear - I don't need any more guitars/amps etc but weak willed person that I am it doesn't stop me wanting some laugh.gif .

Playing - the one thing I've come to learn in life is how little I know and how much more there is to learn. A bit akin to shining a torch in the dark I suppose - you can either concentrate on and be happy with all that is revealed in the small corona of light or want to know what still remains in the dark as well. I go for the latter even if it's never ending. As Blanchot once put it, I paraphrase a bit, it's the possibility of the impossible rather than the impossibility of the possible that intrigues me most.

Cheers,
Tony
