GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ The Most Underrated Players

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 9 2014, 11:45 PM

Who do you think are the most underrated guitar players who are not getting enough attention, yet truly deserve it. I discover new great guitarists every day but this thread is for those that would deserve the recognition of guitarists like Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert and Joe Satriani. It would be also cool to discuss about what are the main reasons you think that this ones are overrated. I think that the lack of marketing, good luck and maybe charisma could be some of the reasons...

Who would you put on the list of the most underrated guitar players? and why do you think they are on your list?

I know we've had this type thread before, but it's interesting to see as new people sign up to the site.

Of course I think Adam Jones is underrated.

But also, 2 guys that wrote some awesome music, but tend to be looked at as jokes, are Ace Frehley and Mick Marrs. I don't see Slash as any better a guitarist then these guys, but I was never a fan of Guns and Roses either - however I like the band much better without Axle. And Slash seems like a good solid guy, dedicated and a genuine person, where I've read some horror stories about Ace having lead guitarist complex.

Another 2 guitarists that are overshadowed by their bands music as a whole are Tommy Shaw and Steve Lukather - both phenomenal guitarists.

I haven't been a massive fan of Incubus since Dirk the bassist left, even though they're still great, but Mike Enzinger was never showered with much guitar heroism either - and he's extremely innovative.

I guess when I think of underrated, it's because I think of the axe slingers with all the standard guitar player wear and paraphernalia on the front of magazines - looking "awesome" ---> Insert Head Banging and Devil Horn Fingers <---

YouTube is jam packed with underrated guitarists. All the incredible talent playing guitar in their bedrooms - and who gets pulled out for super-stardom...Justin Bieber.

That's an interesting list, I really like Adam (Tool) and Mike (Incubus). There are two of the most original alt rock guitarist. I could add them to a list of unusual guitarist with Tom Morello and Jack White.

Totally agree with you and Spock and also, let's put Wes Borland there smile.gif

You see, all these guys are a bit underrated because they chose to express themselves WITHOUT too much accent on soloing. Somehow, in the collective mind, a guitarist has to be a LOUD person that solos all the time biggrin.gif

How do you guys see that? Do you think that people see that as a definition?

Exactly. I definitely agree with everything you wrote here. How I forgot Wes?

this is pure magic, I don't need an ultra fast harmonic minor scale to say that this guitarist is brilliant:
