Hi guys,

maybe some of you noticed that few months ago I stopped being active here at GMC. Dont you think, I quit guitar or music tho. The reason is I joined a band, which was just about to hit the studio, so in two weeks I had to learn 5 songs by them through and through and put it on record... well I somehow managed to do it (insane times those were, for first time we wrote solo on scratch and recorded it 5 minutes later - thats the trade-off solo in Tomorrow) and now we have first results.

And since it was here with rest of GMC where I learned to play, I would like to hear your comments. Our gengre is somewhere around melodic/progressive metalcore. If you guys would like, I can post the lyrics.

The first song is Believe - its one of two calmer things we play (I love it tho...). Lyrically its about finding your own value and overally just being able to live with yourself and the mistakes you've done in past.

The second is Tomorrow - on the contrary one of faster things we have (also the first verse is INSANE to play precisely live..), coud be said is about all those people around us who try to tell us who we are and try to lie us into something - well and the guy just gets angry.

Comments and criticisms much appreciated smile.gif Just bear in mind, that its metalcore, so you mostly wont like the vocals I guess... ^^

Quick q Jakub before I make any comment:

is the track the mix that has been sent for mastering or is it the master that has come back converted to an mp3? If it's the latter what did you request of the ME - as an ME it would help me to know what you want/ed from the session.

This is the master, we got back from studio and I want criticism music/composition-wise.

If you see some serious issue in the overal mix or sound feel free to say smile.gif

But I am not sure, if I fully understood - what is "the ME" - if its the person, who did the master than I will enlighten you a bit:

The drums were recorded at studio #1, then we recorded Gtr,Bss,Screams and Vocals at studio #2, then we went home with this and the other guitarist did the mixing - then we decided, that we are not happy with instrument sounds, so at our other guitarists home we recorded Gtrs, bss, screams and vocals again (and then guitars and vocals once more), then 2nd guitarist mixed it up and then we sent it to studio #3 for mastering - he did something with EQ's (it sounds mightier), compressed it thus increasing volume (we returned it twice, cos it sounded over-compressed for us, so this is sort of compromise.. we wanted kinda open sound..)

Sorry, I got your post wrong at the first time smile.gif

ME - is the Mastering Engineer.

I'm an ME and TBH I try not to comment on what other MEs have done as I don't know what was sent to them or what they were asked to do. Also I assume your ME sent you back either a Red book CDA, DDP or Wave file and then you've had to format change it to an mp3 so that you could post it here.

For the first mp3...

Assuming that you converted the MEs media to an mp3 - so I'm not commenting on what your ME did. This would help explain why your first track is clipped with some digital distortion going on. Take a look at the CDA/DPP/wave file you were sent, I'd assume it sits with a peak between -0.1 to -0.3 dB and never exceeds that as your ME probably brickwall limited it to get volume and avoid clipping but the mp3 encoding has pushed it in to clipping and stripped out some of the dynamics and resolution.

I like the song smile.gif , particularly because the various instruments come in and out and also that there is some macro dynamics. Personally I'd like more in the way of micro dynamics as I think the loud sections lack crest and could gain a bit from a little more light and shade. Also personally, for this genre, I'd prefer more/some sub bass in the 60hZ and below end.

Just my opinion though smile.gif .

I don't really know this kind of music and how it is supposed to sound, but the playing seems to be very tight and accurate. Soundwise it sounds a little "flat" to me, I miss some high-end and low bottom. The drums seems to be very compressed and sounds more like a drum machine, is it digital drums??? Otherwise, it was a good job imo. and the songs we're interesting! smile.gif

Hey these songs sound great! I really like the song - Tomorrow. Its got an amazing groove which I dig even though I don't listen to this genre of music much. Overall mix sounds powerful, maybe a bit too bright for my taste (and drums sounding "unreal"). Good job on getting in this band and doing the recording! smile.gif
