GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ A Little Help From Joe

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Apr 7 2011, 10:10 AM

Sometimes even famous guitarist get a little helping hand. First check out Zsolt's new lesson, "http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metallica-One-Third-Solo/", and then post a reply to today's topic.

Zsolt states: "Another thing that is interesting to mention is that it is rumored that this solo was probably written by Joe Satriani (or parts of it). Kirk used to take lessons from him at this time, and the beginning tapping part was a hint from Joe." What do you think really happened?

I'm currently reading a Metallica biography at the moment, where it mentioned Kirk first taking some lessons with Joe when they were working on Ride The Lightning.. he wanted some help on how to approach soloing over such atonal riffs, with neither minor nor major 3rds etc.. and Joe introduced him to using different modes over the chords.

I'm not sure if he was still seeing Joe around '88 but he may have done.. however I think Joe just pointed him towards ideas, but didn't write any. Also, and I don't mean this against Kirk because I love Kirk, but if Satriani wrote the solo it would be even more amazing wouldn't it ? After all, he's the guy who gave us the Surfing With The Alien album.... ohmy.gif
