Hello again,

I have a question to see if i'm on schedule.

Because i know that from level 5 you are an advanced player.

In how many years it is normal to reach that level?

I play for three years now but i don,t know if my evolution is normal or slower then the average.

Thank already

just a quick thought , I will let the pro's answer this, but , it's not the years , but, the quality and time spent practicing the make the difference

P.S> Mr. wylde went from nothing- to ozzy's guitarist in 5 years, this depresses me

Jstcrsn answered exactly what I would answer here. It doesn't depend of years, it depends on how many time you practice every day, what you practice, how, etc. There are important things like "practicing everyday", "having a good routine", "being checked/guided by anyone with more experience" that can be decisive to be better in less time. And the last factor is the facilities of each person, this can make a variation in time.

My suggestion would be not to think on how many years it will take. Focus on having a good routine, and practice every day trying to achieve short term goals that keep you evolving every time.

Hey there smile.gif

The thing is there is no set time period for getting to the level you want to. There are too many variables involved, that include: different people learn new things fast or slow and the time you devote to practice.

I picked up the guitar when I was 15, and I'm 21 now and I still consider myself in the beginner-intermediate area smile.gif Not a beginner because I know theory and I plan to learn enough theory to try getting out some records to see if I can get a career in music. And not a beginner because I know almost all the techniques and I have touched upon all of those techniques, even went on ahead and became really good at some (since I came to GMC, my bending, alternate picking and vibrato have improved MASSIVELY in a short period of time).

The learning process never stops, you never really "master" the guitar per se smile.gif you always keep on learning more and more.

These days, because its summer holidays, I practice 2 to 4 hours a day. But usually, because of college and work, I practice 1 to 2 hours a day. But those hours are pure focus, THAT is when I see improvement.

Then there are days when I don't even want to pick up my guitar laugh.gif I watch a movie or play a video game or hang out with my mates smile.gif

So there's a lot of variables involved, thus no one can say how much time a particular person will take to reach a level they want to.

What you CAN do is make a long term goal, then make short term goals. Make sure those short term goals are something achievable in at most 4 weeks (1 month).

I'll give you an example: My friend (who also teaches guitar professionally) taught me a metal shred lick which is played at around 200BPM triplets two days ago. Its a very simple lick whose shape can be applied to any major scale. I got it up to 160BPM triplets just now, and I'm proud of it because I started out pretty slow (at 65BPM triplets) smile.gif

Sorry for the long post, but since I went through the thoughts you are going through now once, that's why I wanted to share some experiences smile.gif

There are no rules that guarantee success in some particular time. Even if any of us will tell You You need 3 more years to reach the level...than doing "back to the future" and meeting yourself 3 years later You could be disappointed or...amazed by the things You are able to play. Any of us need as much time as...he needs. Just spend Your time enjoying the guitar and making fund combined with some practice. It's note a game...

To add some cool example....Jakub was playing guitar for about 3 years like You...when he made this video:

So You see there is no rule and no need to bet on time...just be curious about music...curiosity is the key...it gives a motivation

Darius said something very important: "Enjoy it". It's important to be organized, have a good routine, practice every day, but the most important thing is to enjoy it. If not' it doesn't make sense.
