Posted by: Lund Oct 16 2007, 03:21 AM

Hey kris smile.gif

I feel comfortable with the pentatonic scale. but not at all with all the other scales, i can play them, but i cant use them in improvising.. you have a good tip?

One more question:
How to make guitar scream? I know how to hold the pick, but i cant make it scream..
I hold it close to my thumb, and hit the string with both the thumb and the pick.. :b

and btw great site biggrin.gif

Hey Lund,

Yes - I suggest that once you have learned a scale, take one or two licks which you like and which uses that scale - then basically force yourself to improvise with those licks. It will be a traumatic experience the first days but then slowly turn in to something pleasant!

To make your guitar scream you need to use harmonics! smile.gif

If it's just the top of your fingers that hurt you can decide for yourself!

However it's something insid ethe hand or arm then you should stop emmediately!

It's in the throat - not so much of a diaphragm thing - also you need to inhale to produce that sound. Well worth the effort though! biggrin.gif

Kris

Im at the same stage now. I know all 5 pentatonic boxes (on pentatonic vid 2, ill be going to vid 3 soon once im more comfortable with the scale).

I dont really know what improvising is but i really want to be able to do it. Is it taking a lick and playing it at different positions in those boxes? (just to confirm)

How do i tell what key (and scale) a lick is in and exactly how do i substitute those complex licks (sometimes the gap between the notes changes, so the lick sounds different at different parts of the boxes; should i ignore those extended gaps or just substitute where the lick exactly fits into the box)?

Heres a lick site that was submitted by another GMCer:
http://www.myguitarsolo.com/Licks/Licks.htm

Now heres the lick id like to learn to improvise to:
http://www.myguitarsolo.com/Licks/htm/Lick320.html

The strange part is that this does not look like a lick (more like an entire song). Is it really possible to improvise around with complex things like this?

Does GMC have a sort of list of licks because im unable to differentiate between a lick and a riff. I check out the lick of the day section and most of them sound like blues/ jazz stuff. I want to be able to shred like metal guitarists (somewhat like Buckethead but mostly guitar players in bands like Trivium, Bullet For My Valentine and Metallica).

Thanks a lot Kris or anyone who is reading this post and trying to help me out here. I know its a long post and is hard to understand (i dont really understand the question i have myself).
