I have recently purchased an Ibanez Prestige 2550mz-GW which came with the IBZ pups fitted as standard. In conjunction with good advice from members of this forum and this review which is the same guitar as mine (except the colour)
http://en.audiofanzine.com/stc-shaped-guit.../reviews/#pages I decided to replace the IBZ's with a White Evolution set; DP158FSP DP159FSP and ISCV2BKUK-Middle pickup. First of all the guitar is great to play, has a fretboard and action to die for and fitted with the zero point trem system which I think is fairly new. The Evo's are substantually more powerfull thats for sure than the IBZ and they do sound smoother as the IBZ's sometimes sounded a little grainy and my tech considered they were smaller wound than the Evolutions. The single coil middle pickup I don't rate at all, it sounds less powerfull and has no character. If anyone were to go ahead I would just go for the two humbuckers and leave your single coil IBZ and save your money. I am only a bedroom player now but if you were to use the Evo's with a big amp etc, etc I'm sure your sound would benefit substantially. On my small Zoom G2 with a small line 6 amp I have had to turn down the gain on most of my settings to accomodate the extra power in these pickups. I have noticed on youtube some have put the "Steve specials" in the bridge and the "Air Norton or the PAF" in the neck. However, I have a hand made guitar about 12 years old built by a local luthier with good quality Humbuckers also wound by hand and the IBZ's were marginally more powerful but not as smooth. Pickups are very subjective I suppose but I can say I am well pleased with the Evo's and I finally finished up by paying £950'ish all-together. The guitar cost £700 (new JAKE'S GUITARS ebay UK) and the set of pickups (white more expensive than the black) were £220 with £20 fitted. Hope this helps anyone interested in a replacement. I agree, those are great pups. EVO's sit well in an Ibanez. I have a set of Evolution in mine, which is made out of Basswood. Steve Vai's top of the line is Adler which would be a tad brighter.
I chose to put a set of Breed in my Charvel made from Adler. That's a match in heaven imo, Breed is a bit darker than Evo/Evolution. Both deliver sooooo clean fat tones. -------------------- My bands homepage
