Hey Oscar!

It's a great question, but the answer is a complex one smile.gif I for one have discovered that the most important aspect in this case is understanding the rhythmic patterns behind the two instruments at work: guitar and voice.

Here's how I do it:

- I learn both parts very well
- I sing and I play only the chord changes
- I play the guitar part and try to understand where each note in the vocal line comes in and for how long it lasts
- I play and sing without using words, only humming - in this way, you have less to focus on. The words, even though it may not seem so at a first glance, will take up a lot of your focus.

Now, this is a very lengthy process with which you need to get used to and experiment and practice A LOT in order to get things right. This here is pretty much the most difficult thing I ever got to play and sing live. I sorted out the bass line and synth chords and played them in the same time on the guitar, while reciting the vocals as a free speech poem, which is far more difficult than singing the line, because they aren't fixed smile.gif That means, my playing should be going on unconsciously - that's pretty much the way it should be, so that you can focus solely on the voice:

Interesting topic! I've never studied how to sing but I have been training my ear for many years and also singing over my favorite songs while I listen to them. The first step if you've never sang is to be able to sing on pitch. You don¡t have to worry too much about your voice quality, just be sure that you can sing the notes that you hear or thing. I think that guitar is a great tool for practicing this. I always recommend to students to practice scales and sing them at the same time in order to make the connection between mind and fingers smoother. But the good thing is that this is also a great training for singing.

If you check Luciana's singing lessons (https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/instructor/Luciana-Segovia/), you will notice that I worked with her to design the lessons and to make them special for guitarists, so it wouldn't be a bad move to start working on them to train your voice and learn some of the techniques more used.

Also I wonder if you checked this lesson where the topic "Singing while playing" is covered: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/singing_while_playing/

Please feel free to record yourself a song or a part of a song and share it with me if you want some feedback about your tuning and singing. wink.gif

As Gabi said, a recording will most likely help us a lot in seeing what you should focus on in the aspect of singing and playing in the same time smile.gif

One tip I can give is learn the guitar part so you can do it with your eyes closed or while watching TV. You have to have one part completely nailed. And If your singing and playing one of them isn't going to be at 100% your best if you were doing them separately.

I probably go about 80% either way
