Since this is a very debated topic among the music people in Romania, I would like to bring it up at GMC as well smile.gif

In here there are a whole lot of TV shows or events, where people have to or want to playback instead of performing for real! In some of the TV shows or events, the conditions are not ok for performing live, but the organizers want an artist to perform, so the artist will playback. In the other situation, the 'artist' is not entirely professional to be able to play live and pull a good show, so playback is chosen.

I for one had to do it in 2 occasions, when the organizers had no clue on what a live band needs, we were young and inexperienced, so we had no clue they won't have what we need, so it turned out really nasty for our morale - mimicking playing while the CD was on ... what a shame laugh.gif

I am curious - is this happening in other countries? And if yes, what's your opinion about it? Were you ever forced to do it - if yes, how did it go?

Yeah it happens everywhere these days smile.gif

It's a completely pointless exercise really but I'm not particularly offended by it when I see it. It just is what it is but it is a very silly practise. smile.gif

Well, this doesn't happen with rock here but it happens with more popular styles like pop and "cumbia".

You should do this! tongue.gif

laugh.gif good one! There are some guys here called 'Timpuri Noi' who were getting banned because whenever they were made to playback, they left the CD rolling and started playing checkers on stage laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

It kindof defeats the purpose of "performing" IMO. I can't fault necessity, but it's the "live"ness of a show that makes a show worth attending. If want to hear a band, I'll listen to their CD. But when i go to a show, i want to see them REALLY play - it's all the messups, unpredicable moments, raw voices and instruments that really set a live show apart from everything else.

But pop I suppose is somewhat different - when you have a solo artist - but i still prefer to hear a real singer sing on the spot.

When someone in a live performance messes up - that's forgiveable - no shame or embarrassment in that. When a lip sync'er drops a microphone and you can still hear them singing, then I'm terribly embarrassed for that person and that just takes the joy out of it for me.

Last sunday we recorded a video session for an acustic we are editing. So I had to do the playback ( singing and playing) like 4 times per song. I felt really weird doing the mimic and all that....but then you see the shots and it seems like you are really singing or playing.
I guess that much people do not realize when you are live or not.

I know that some artist cache is higher if you want them to do a live performance

Remember the case of Lyly Vanyly (or something like that) they won a grammy and then they had to give it back when the academy discovered they were not the singers and did playback happy.gif

Madonna 'lip-synched' (Playback-ed) the Super Bowl Half Time Show.
Not sure I agree with this, if someone has paid a ticket price to see a live show then that's what they should see. Even though Madonna didn't recieve any payment for her 12 minute set!

I've done it many times and I have a confession to make : the more you do it the more you start to like it smile.gif
I know I know - mimicking without the guitar cord is not nearly as performing. But on the other hand - its so much easier to organize and stress free + its cool that people watching TV get to hear the CD version of the song (especially when that song doesn't have an official music video). Its a usual practice here at TV stations.

Though performing live for TV is also amazing and lot of fun - especially when the TV studio/scenography is cool and sound done well!
